OH NO!!! Nononononono … just NO!
Does the name David Duke ring any bells? It should. It should set off very loud alarm bells to those who live in the U.S. David Duke is the former head of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). And now he is planning to run for the U.S. Senate, hoping to gain the seat being vacated by retiring Senator David Vitter! This man MUST be stopped! For those who may not be familiar with him, Duke is an American white supremacist, anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, politician, and former Grand Wizard of the of the Ku Klux Klan. Yep, he hates just about everybody who is not a WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant).
Duke is also a convicted felon, having been found guilty of defrauding supporters by falsely claiming to be impoverished and in danger of losing his home in order to solicit emergency donations; at the time, Duke was financially secure, and used the donations for recreational gambling. He served 15 months in prison. In 2009 he visited the Czech Republic, on invitation from a group of Neo-Nazis and was promptly arrested on suspicion of “denying or approving of the Nazi genocide and other Nazi crimes” and “promotion of movements seeking suppression of human rights”. He was released after 2 days and told to be out of the country by midnight. He is also banned from both Italy and Switzerland.
This is not Duke’s first foray into politics. He served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for a single term in the early 1990s, and ran, unsuccessfully, for president in both 1988 and 1992, once as a Republican and once as a Democrat. He also ran for Louisiana State Senate, United States Senate, United States House of Representatives, and Governor of Louisiana, all unsuccessfully. So why does he think he can win this time? Because of the atmosphere that has been created by a circus clown who shall remain nameless in this blog, but you all know who I mean! Because suddenly the masses have been told that it is okay to hate African-Americans, Jews, and Muslims! They have been given the ‘go-ahead’ to be racist, to hate. So a white supremacist sees his opportunity and makes plans to grab the golden ring.
Before the world turned upside-down, I would have laughed Duke’s candidacy off, having full confidence in the intelligence of the American voters to see Duke as the racist, idiot he is. However, in the last 13 months, I have come to realize that there is a large portion of people, voters, in this country who traded their intelligence in for a box of Cracker Jacks, and I no longer trust in the “American people” to do the right thing.
There are actually 21 people competing for this Senate seat. National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Executive Director Ward Baker had this to say: “Louisiana voters will be able to choose from several Republican Senate candidates who will have a great impact on the Bayou State and the future of our country. David Duke is not one of them. He will not have the support of the NRSC under any circumstance. [emphasis added]” Good to know that, but then, Bozo the Clown did not have the support of the RNC, but look what happened there.
The population of Louisiana is about 64% white and 32.5% African-American. One thing I read gave me hope that perhaps there may yet be some sanity left in Louisiana. While other states, particularly in the southern half of the U.S., have been busily passing laws that restrict gay, lesbian and transgender rights, Louisiana’s Democratic governor, John Bel Edwards, signed an executive order extending protection to state employees and contractors against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. It also bans state agencies from discriminating in the services they provide. “While this executive order respects the religious beliefs of our people, it also signals to the rest of the country that discrimination is not a Louisiana value, but rather, that Louisiana is a state that is respectful and inclusive of everyone around us.” A positive sign indeed, but is it enough?
Duke has been vociferously urging voters in his state to vote for Bozo, so will Bozo return the favour? Who knows. Additionally, Baton Rouge has been a hotbed in the last two weeks, first with the killing on July 5th of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, was shot several times at point blank range while pinned to the ground by two white Baton Rouge Police Department officers. Then later with the shooting on July 17th of six police officers, three of whom died. Racial tensions are likely high at this time, which could easily sway white voters, with these events fresh in their minds.
David Duke has not won any election in the last 27 years, though not for lack of trying. It stands to reason that he will not win this one, especially in the light of so much competition. However, I said the same thing 13 months ago about another candidate for office, and I was proven to be so very wrong. Let us hope, once again, that cooler heads will prevail. Another glimmer of hope might be that I still expect the Democrats to occupy the big White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue come January, and the down vote I anticipate may keep Duke, who changes party affiliation on a semi-regular basis but is running this time as a Republican, out of the Senate. But then, the world has turned upside down, and my predictions seem to have little validity these days. Sigh.
