Bits ‘n Pieces from Here ‘n There …

I had several bits ‘n pieces of news to share today, but none were enough for an entire post, so I will present, instead, a compilation of interesting tidbits, updates to prior posts, etc.

New Washington Post Feature Will Discuss Issues, Since Candidates Won’t

In Theory is a blog by the Washington Post where ideas (mostly political) are debated by policy experts, presidential advisers and other thinkers.  Today, they are launching a new series called “The Missing Debate,” where they will be weigh in on the critical questions our presidential candidates should be addressing — but often aren’t. This series has the potential to be interesting and valuable if done well.   Here is a link, in case you would like to check it out for yourself. Today’s topic is ‘wealth inequality’.

Last Week’s Idiot of the Week – Is Still an Idiot

idiot5Remember earlier this month when I awarded the Idiot of the Week to Katrina Pierson?  She is back in the news today with more of the same ignorance that earned her the award in the first place.  She alleged that members of the political media have “literally beat Trump supporters into submission.” Perhaps Ms. Pierson fails to understand the meaning of the word “literally”?  And just last weekend she said, “Remember: We weren’t even in Afghanistan by this time. Barack Obama went into Afghanistan, creating another problem.”  For the record, we invaded Afghanistan in October 2001, when Barack Obama was an Illinois State Senator.  It was the decision of the George W. Bush administration to invade Afghanistan.  Sigh … go on back home and eat your Cracker Jacks, Ms. Pierson.

Make Trump Take a Citizenship Test?  Hmmmm …

Khizr Khan, the father of the Muslim-American war hero who was mocked by Trump last month for a speech he gave at the DNC, is calling for Trump to take a citizenship test, the same test that Khan and his wife took to become U.S. citizens.  I think the idea has a great deal of merit!  In May I published a post, Why Goats Can’t Vote where I discussed the citizenship test and how few Americans scored well on it.  I bet money that, without written ‘cheat sheets’ prepared by his advisors, Trump would fail miserably.  So, I second Mr. Khan’s motion … let us make da trumpeter put his pencil where his mouth is!  Sample/practice citizenship tests … see how well you can do!

Squirt Gun to Replace Six-Shooter … At Least on iPhone

squirt gunApple’s new suite of operating systems appears to replace its pistol emoji, which was an image of a six-shooter, with a squirt gun. Though their reason for doing so seems unclear, speculation is that it may be the result of a campaign by a public relations firm working with New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, aimed at persuading Apple to prevent, in one swoop, anyone from sending or receiving that cartoon image of a handgun. The interesting thing, however, is that while the gun emoji will now show as a squirt gun on Apple’s iPhone, a message sent to another type of phone, such as Google or Microsoft or Samsung, will convert it to the regular pistol on the receiving phone.  Who knows whether this idea will catch on and become a trend, and I doubt it will have any impact on gun violence, but still … I rather like it.

Robot Vacuum Maybe Not That Smart!

I had a good chuckle from this tidbit from The Guardian:

roombaJesse Newton’s Roomba vacuum cleaner is programmed to vacuum the house at night. But earlier this month, it picked up dog feces left by the family puppy and spreading the mess over every conceivable surface. “Quite honestly, we see this a lot,” said a spokesman from iRobot, the company that makes the Roomba. “Our engineers are always trying to figure out ways to help people with their problems, and we’ve known this is an issue people deal with.”

Da Trumpeter to Get First Security Briefing Today … Hold Your Breath, Folks!

trump-security-briefingToday, Donald Trump is scheduled to receive his first classified intelligence briefing.  {Shudder}  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called on the CIA to provide Trump with false information.  I, like most other anti-trumpeters, was concerned, but apparently, according to several sources, the briefings that both Trump and Clinton will receive focus mainly on straight policy issues with little or no detail provided.  In truth, Clinton probably already knows more than she will learn in her briefing.  But try to picture Trump … and the people who will be briefing him!  I mean, the man is convinced he is the smartest man in the nation (this, despite the fact that he doesn’t read) and already knows more than anybody.  I can only imagine … those stuck with the unfortunate task of briefing da trumpeter will be in need of a bottle of aspirin, a bottle of Jack Daniels and a 2-week vacation at the end of the day!

NASA Says July 2016 Hottest Month On Record

NASA’s results, which combine sea-surface temperature and air temperature on land, show July was the 10th month in a row to break monthly temperature record!  July 2016 was the hottest month in recorded history, beating the record set just 12 months before and continuing the long string of monthly records, according to the latest Nasa data.  But no, folks, there is no ‘climate change’, no ‘global warming’ … it is all just a hoax perpetuated by President Obama and Hillary Clinton in order put coal miners out of work and bring down Donald Trump!

Well, I must move on to bigger and better things now, so that wraps up today’s snippets.  I might make this a once-a-week feature, since I am always collecting these snippets on postie notes and scraps of paper, but rarely use them.  Let me know what you think!

  1. I think all who vote should take a civics test — or at least a civics course in High School. That used to be a requirement for all High School graduates. But that was then… I suspect Trump would fail the test miserably and then claim it was biased against rich white men with no minds.
