Oh for Pete’s sake! I … I … I am … stuttering. I don’t know whether to laugh or slam my fist into something! Okay, folks, here is the latest about … well, you know who … I don’t need to tell you.
“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs. Fifty-eight percent of your youth is unemployed. What the hell do you have to lose?
“And at the end of four years, I guarantee you that I will get over 95 percent of the African-American vote. I promise you. Because I will produce.
“No group in America has been more harmed by Hillary Clinton’s policies than African-Americans. No group. No group. If Hillary Clinton’s goal was to inflict pain on the African-American community, she could not have done a better job. It’s a disgrace. Tonight, I’m asking for the vote of every single African-American citizen in this country who wants to see a better future.”
The above is an excerpt from a speech Trump gave to a predominantly white crowd in Dimondale, Michigan last night. There is so much wrong with this that I do not know where to begin. First, why is he making this speech to a group of white people? Second, why would he say those things, even if there were African-Americans in the audience? To make them believe that their lives suck? Third, he cannot be elected … he simply cannot! Fourth, Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State! Does he not even understand that the position of Secretary of State is the president’s chief foreign affairs adviser? In that capacity, she had absolutely nothing to do with domestic policy! Where is this man’s brain? Is it the ‘prize’ in someone’s box of Cracker Jacks? Every time I think he has reached the lowest possible point, he digs himself one even lower. Thankfully, most African-Americans are smarter than he and would not vote for him if he were the only one on the ballot.
Please forgive my little rant … I feel much better now. Sometimes one just needs to do that. On now to other news …
Trump supporters apparently cannot pass his new proposed ‘ideology test’, according to an informal, decidedly un-scientific test by the Daily Show. According to Trump, we would ban from entering the country any who could not pass his test, the criteria being that he would only accept immigrants who support freedom of religion, women’s rights, and gay rights. Funny that, since he has denigrated women and gays and put down Muslims more than a few times. The Daily Show sent a reporter to quiz supporters standing in line outside of a Trump rally and find out if they would pass an extreme vetting test.
Most of those quizzed did not respect Islam as a religion, did not support gay marriage, and their views on women? Well, here is what one of the women interviewed had to say when asked if she thought a woman could be president:
“No. A female has more hormones. She could start a war or anything. Hot flashes … BOOM!”
Another woman when asked if gay couples should have equal rights:
“No … the regular couple, they work so hard, y’know. And the gay couple … they want … more.”
“When you say “more” … do you mean equal?”
Turns out, there is a pretty strict and simple criterion for Trump supporters in general: you must be a bigot. Surprise. Every one of those shown on this brief clip have traded their brains for a box of Cracker Jacks. Check out the video for yourself.
During the early days of the campaign, Trump mocked and humiliated fellow candidate Chris Christie every chance he got. Yet, after dropping out of the race, Christie endorsed Trump, sold his soul, if you will, and is one of the few who still show unconditional support for Trump. Why? Because, friends, Trump has promised him that he can lead his “transition team” after the election. Now, note that a transition team is only needed by the winner, not the loser, so it is an empty promise, but still, it has Christie literally eating out of Trump’s hand.
Thursday, Christie vetoed, undoubtedly on Trump’s ‘suggestion’, two bills that would have made it easier for New Jersey residents to vote. The first would have automatically registered voters when they get or renew a driver’s license. The second would have allowed 17-year-old New Jersey residents to vote in primaries if they turn 18 by the time of the general election. Together they would have improved ballot access in New Jersey, a state that is currently ranked 39th in the country in terms of both the percentage of eligible voters who are registered and the percentage of voters who actually cast a ballot. Christie said of the proposed bills that “This bill should be called ‘the Voter Fraud Enhancement and Permission Act.’”
In November 2015, Christie vetoed the “Democracy Act,” which would have taken a number of steps to improve voter access, including requiring the translation of ballots into multiple languages. It would appear that Mr. Christie does not wish the good people of his state, the people who voted him into office, the people who pay his salary, to be able to vote! Now why do you suppose that would be?
New Jersey is typically a pretty democratic state. They have voted for a Democratic president in six out of the last seven elections; both current Senators are Democrats; five out of 11 House representatives are Democrats, with one vacancy; two out of past three governors have been Democrats.
Funny, but I used to actually like Governor Christie. At one time, he seemed to be capable of putting partisan politics aside to do the best he could for the people of his state, but obviously Trump changed all that. Christie sold out when he endorsed Trump, and is now selling the people of his state down the river. He will be up for re-election in 2017 and I believe that the good people of New Jersey will take a line right out of Trump’s playbook and say “YOU’RE FIRED!”
That about wraps it up for another day. I decided to laugh about it, by the way, since last time I put my fist into something, it left a hole in the wall which is still there today. Thanks to all readers of this blog for giving me the opportunity to vent and to share my angst. Hopefully after November I will be able to get back to addressing other things more often! That is if I am not in a straight jacket!
