As I write this, there is live coverage on television and a variety of other media outlets, even The Guardian in the UK … live coverage all around the world … of Donald Trump finally admitting that he knows, understands and accepts that President Barack Obama was, in fact, born in the United States. Stop the presses! It is now official because da trumpeter has said so! Whoop. Everybody drop what you are doing and listen to this buffoon say what those of us who still have functioning brains have known all along. Sheesh.
In the minds of at least half the population of this nation, apparently what Trump believes about the nationality of our president is among the top issues this election year. According to those who think this is breaking news, here are their list of the top issues (note these are not ranked in any particular order):
- President Obama’s birthplace and what Trump believes about it
- Hillary Clinton’s health
- Donald Trump’s health
- Bill Clinton’s extra-marital affairs
- Michelle Obama’s clothing (sleeveless dresses … GASP!)
- Hillary Clinton’s clothing
- Hillary Clinton’s emails
- Hillary Clinton’s role in Benghazi
- The Clinton Foundation
I ask you, readers … is this any way to run an election???? And I will answer my own question: NO, it is not!
Last week, Hillary Clinton was criticized by both sides for the following comment:
“You know, just to be grossly generalist, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables, the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. That other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for a change. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”
While I completely agree with Ms. Clinton on this, I do not think it was the smartest campaign move for her to say it in quite that way. However, by her definition of deplorables, people who nurture hatred against other people for no reason other than they are different in one aspect or another, it is true that the actions and ideologies of those people are deplorable. Does that make them deplorable people? I think that if you are willing to condemn a person because their skin colour, ethnicity, religion or gender is different than your own, then yes, perhaps you are a deplorable person. And it is they who think of the campaign issues as being the ones I listed above. They are so mired in the gossip, the mud-slinging, the innuendo and multiple “-isms” that Trump is spouting that they have failed to notice the real issues that will face the next president. *
The election has become the nation’s biggest and worst reality show, rather than a serious search for a person to lead our nation through the real issues for the coming four years. It is an even worse reality show than the one where Trump fired people, whatever that was called. I suspect that those who took offense, those who were most outraged by Ms. Clinton’s remarks, are the very ones who could not identify the 10 most critical issues facing our nation, and the next president, if asked to do so. They are the ones who actually brag that they “haven’t read a book in years”, or get all their news from Fox News. They cannot be bothered to find out what either candidate really stands for, his/her experience and qualifications, as they are too busy watching Duck Dynasty or the Kardashians on television. They are the ones who so arrogantly believe they are better than African-Americans, Muslims, LGBT people and others. I, along with many other bloggers and mainstream journalists, have even tried to make it easy for them, spoon-feeding them so that they will not need to move their posteriors from in front of the television. But they do not trust us … they say we are “liberals”, as if that were a dirty word, they say we are liars and that we must be living on social welfare and food stamps. They say we are blind and stupid.
I have referred to those who support Trump as ‘lemmings’, meaning I think they are not particularly intellectual, and are lazily following him off the cliff, perhaps because it is the path of least resistance. Ms. Clinton refers to them as ‘deplorables’, meaning bigots who would prefer to populate the world with self-clones rather than to embrace the differences of others. Another blogger calls them ‘marks’, saying “they’re gullible people falling for a conman’s biggest scam yet.” Another one I heard was ‘trumplodytes’. And to those of you who are offended by this, consider this old adage: If the shoe fits, wear it.
Whatever one calls them, the frightening thing about them is that they are contagious and they are spreading their disease at an alarming rate. The media panders to the masses, so if you want to know what the masses are interested in, just turn on your television, or log on to one of the mainstream media outlets. Today, the first story you will hear is that Donald Trump finally admitted Barack Obama was born in the U.S. You will hear it analyzed 50 different ways, and if you are smart, you will turn the set off, cancel your cable subscription and pick up a book. To be very clear: the issues I listed at the start of this post are irrelevant to this presidential election. I do not care about any of them, and neither should you, dear reader. I rest my case.
* For those who are seriously interested in issues, I happened upon this article in FiveThirtyEight today that has some excellent information and analysis.
