The headline speaks … no, actually it screams … volumes:
White Nationalists See Advocate in Steve Bannon Who Will Hold Trump to his Campaign Promises
White Supremacists Praise Trump Aide Steve Bannon
In fact, I almost feel as if those headlines make it unnecessary for me to write anything else … they may well say everything we need to know about Trump’s new ‘Chief Strategist’. However, since my fingers are twitchy, I shall proceed anyway.
A bit of background for those who may not be familiar with Bannon. He is a white nationalist, anti-Semite, misogynist, and former CEO of the alt-right publication Breitbart. He is also on my list, though I have not yet gotten to him, for Filosofa’s Idiot of the Week award. Need I say more?
Among some of Bannon’s recent headlines:
- “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy”
- “Political Correctness Protects Muslim Rape Culture.”
- “The Solution to Online Harassment is Simple: Women Should Log Off
- “’Gay Rights Have Made Us Dumber, It’s Time to Get Back in the Closet”
- “There’s No Hiring Bias Against Women in Tech, They Just Suck at Interviews”
There are more to be found on the Breitbart website, if you so choose. I felt dirty and ill after visiting in preparation for this post. I was surprised to learn that Bannon has a master’s degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. In 1983, Bannon received an M.B.A. degree with honors from Harvard Business School. He was an officer in the United States Navy, serving on the destroyer USS Paul F. Foster as a Surface Warfare Officer in the Pacific Fleet and stateside as a special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon. One could almost believe that at one time he had a viable brain, but ….
Among the groups that have grave concerns about Bannon as a senior advisor to Trump are the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). “What this signals is Donald Trump bringing hatred of immigrants and Muslims, and misogyny directly into the White House. It is a disaster.” Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center said on Monday. SPLC President Richard Cohen said, “In his victory speech, Trump pledged to be the president for ‘all Americans’ and to ‘bind the wounds of division’ in our country. Appointing someone like Bannon, who will have the president-elect’s ear every single day, makes a mockery of that pledge.”
This is what we are seeing in our nation today. Trump and Bannon will ensure that we see more of the above.
Other organizations who have expressed dislike and concern for Bannon’s appointment are The Aniti-Defamation League, The Council on American-Islamic Relations, many Democratic senators and representatives, and even some Republican Party strategists are condemning the appointment. The Trump campaign, in the persona of Kellyanne Conway, predictably, argued, “(Bannon) has got a Harvard business degree. He’s a Naval officer. He has success in entertainment. I don’t know if you’re aware of that. And he certainly was a Goldman Sachs managing partner. I’m personally offended that you think I would manage a campaign where that would be one of the going philosophies. It was not.” I once felt sorry for Ms. Conway, but now I am seriously considering her for America’s #3 Bimbo, behind Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin. On Sunday, Newt Gingrich argued that Bannon could not be anti-Semitic because he worked in Hollywood and with Goldman Sachs. Geez … isn’t that statement anti-Semitic in and of itself???
I am as well aware as any that Donald Trump is no scholar, no academician, no intellectual thinker … but even so, I would have thought that at the very least he would have the good sense to have sent Bannon back to Breitbart with a “thanks for all your help, Buddie”, a pat on the popo, and been done with him. But apparently da trumpeter is possessed of even less good sense than I gave him credit for! The very first time that Bannon utters a stupid-ism like those headlines, there will be more rioting in the streets than there is today! Thus far, the protests have been mostly peaceful with very small pockets of violence, but Bannon and Trump seem determined to incite riots and provoke those of us who have just about reached the end of our tether!
Some of Bannon’s more ignominious quotes:
- “I could not think higher of Governor Palin. She is a force of nature and has inspired a generation of women to really get actively involved in politics and, more importantly, take their culture back and take their country back.“ (Seriously, dude? She is America’s #2 Bimbo!!!!)
- “That’s one of the unintended consequences of the women’s liberation movement––that, in fact, the women that would lead this country would be feminine, they would be pro-family, they would have husbands, they would love their children. They wouldn’t be a bunch of dykes that came from the 7 Sisters schools.”
This guy, whom I have dubbed America’s #1 Thug, is a piece of work, but let me just add one more thing. In 1996, Bannon was charged with domestic violence, battery and dissuading a witness following an incident with his then-wife. According to the police report, on New Year’s morning 1996, Bannon’s then-wife asked for a credit card to go shopping, and they argued over whether she should just write a check. This quickly turned into a bigger argument about the couple’s finances and future. The details are irrelevant, but what is important is that on Feb. 22, 1996, a complaint was filed against Bannon by the Santa Monica District Attorney’s office for misdemeanor domestic violence, battery, and dissuading a witness, according to Los Angeles County court dockets. He allegedly threatened his wife if she testified against him, and when the case went to trial, she did not appear.
Ever since Trump threw his hat in the ring in June, 2015, incidents of racism and xenophobia have been on the rise, particularly since the election on November 8th. The very last thing this country needs is a president whose chief advisor is a racist, bigoted thug. If you needed further proof that Bannon is absolutely the worst possible choice, our former Idiot of the Week, Ann Coulter, had this to say:
“I think it’s quite brilliant. I’m very impressed with Trump and this decision. Steve Bannon will be the ideas guy and Reince Priebus will be the official representative and he can go on the Sunday morning shows and he can make sure the heat’s on.”
As I said when I wrote about Priebus, the bright side is that at least he didn’t make Bannon Secretary of State. But nonetheless, this is the man who will be the closest advisor to the president. This bigoted, racist, anti-Semite, misogynist will be giving advice to the bigoted, racist anti-Semite, misogynist president. And people wonder why I have cried and lost sleep over the results of the election?
