They Did Not Know Where A $13 Billion Ship Was????

On the 9th of April, it was reported that the US navy had deployed a strike group towards the western Pacific Ocean, to provide a presence near the Korean peninsula. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, said China agreed with the Trump administration that “action has to be taken” regarding North Korea. “President Xi clearly understands, and I think agrees, that the situation has intensified and has reached a certain level of threat that action has to be taken,” Tillerson said.

“US Pacific Command ordered the Carl Vinson strike group north as a prudent measure to maintain readiness and presence in the western Pacific,” said Commander Dave Benham, spokesman at US Pacific Command.

“When you a see a carrier group steaming into an area like that [it] is clearly a huge deterrence.” – White House Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, 11 April 2017

“We are sending an armada, very powerful. We have submarines, very powerful, far more powerful than the aircraft carrier. We have the best military people on Earth.  And I will say this: he is doing the wrong thing.” – Donald Trump, 12 April 2017

In light of all this, the world held its collective breath, understanding that two madmen, each with very short emotional fuses and the capability of starting Armageddon, were playing a very high-stakes game of chicken.

map-1But guess what?  There was no “armada” headed to the Korean peninsula.  The USS Carl Vinson was not even pointed in the direction of North Korea.  There was not so much as a tiny sailboat aimed at the Korean peninsula.  The USS Carl Vinson and its accompanying flotilla were, in fact, sailing south to take part in a preplanned training exercise with the Australian navy!

The question arises:  Did the entire Trump administration perpetuate this lie in order to threaten North Korean President Kim Jong-un and make the world sit up and take notice?  Or did they truly have no clue where the naval flotilla was?  Either way … this is the most blatant example yet of the mass incompetence and chaos in the White House!

Allegedly, now that the Carl Vinson and its strike force are finished training with the Australian navy, they are heading to the Korean peninsula, though it will be next month before they reach their destination.  I have no idea if this is true, given the propensity of Trump & Co. to lie, and the entire fleet may well be in dry-dock for all I know.  However, Sean Spicer, asked to clarify why he lied, fell back on newspeak:

“The statement that was put out was that the Carl Vinson group was headed to the Korean peninsula. It is headed to the Korean peninsula.”  Newspeak.

Defense Secretary James Mattis also refused to say that he had wrongly contributed to the narrative that an American flotilla was racing toward the Korean peninsula:

mattis“In our effort to always be open about what we’re doing, we said that we were going to change the Vinson’s upcoming schedule. We’re doing exactly what we said, and that is, we’re shifting her. Instead of continuing in one direction, as she pulled out of Singapore, she’s going to continue part of her cruise down in that region, but she was on her way up to Korea.”  Doublespeak.

Joel Wit, a co-founder of the 38 North programme of the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, said the confusion was “very perplexing”. “If you are going to threaten the North Koreans, you better make sure your threat is credible. If you threaten them and your threat is not credible, it’s only going to undermine whatever your policy toward them is.”  Makes sense, but I think we can all agree that there is no policy … policy has been replaced with spur-of-the-moment tweets and off-the-cuff rants.

It is clear that what we mostly believed to begin with is true.  We can never believe anything we are told by this administration.  This lie was beyond ‘alternative fact’ … is was a bald-faced lie whose only possible purpose was to threaten and bully Kim Jong-un and deceive the American public.  I, for one, am incensed.

Games like this are NOT how we keep America safer, NOT how to make America ‘great again’, but instead are how we endanger every life, not only here, but around the globe.  Donald Trump and his minions must be removed from office as quickly as possible … there is no other choice if we wish to preserve the human race.

  1. USNI News has the following to say: “On April 8, PACOM commander Adm. Harry Harris ordered the strike group to skip a previously planned port call in Fremantle, Australia and accelerate at sea training with the Royal Australian Navy off of the western coast of the country to get the strike group to the vicinity of Korea faster.” … “A defense official told USNI News on Tuesday the strike group could be off of Korea by sometime next week.” Also, a Carrier Strike Group is not “a ship” and in addition, orders had to be extended for the sailors’ deployment. After all, it’s the navy and they have processes, too. CSGs are not rapid reaction forces. So, not to defend Team Trump: yes, bluster was involved … but even under another administration, the CSG would likely not have been in position any faster.

    • Hahahaha … You always make me laugh! Somehow, I can picture exactly that! It was almost comical watching Spicer try to spin this one … reminded me of a dog chasing his tail, first one way, then the other. If it weren’t so infuriating, it would be funny!

      • The legendary Bob Newhart could have had great fun with one his ‘phone conversations’; this one between The Whitehouse and the Pentagon; the former demanding what went wrong and the latter deflecting the questions.
I managed to create one line:
        (Imagine Bob Newhart voice…)
“Yes….uh-uh….Yeh North Korea (chuckle), those guys….. What’s that..(supress chuckle) The President wants to know how an overweight dofus with a silly hair cut( supresses snigger) gets to (voice rises) run a country (laugh)…Well gee that’s one you’d have to pass to the CIA!”

        • Oh YES! That is royal! I did love Newhart and his dry, deadpan humour. He had a knack that was a rarity. Thanks for that image … I could picture it perfectly! Good thing we can find humour in these situations, else we might all be out beating people up in the streets, and there just aren’t enough jail cells to keep us all! 😀

          • We must have humour, and in that humour it is essential to have a part which laughs and gently mocks ourselves lest we become blinkered and a mirror image of those we oppose.
And end up embracing Intolerance, which I cannot stand. Y’know what I’d do with intolerant people? I’d have them all arrested and locked away for thirty years, I’d impound all their goods and chattels and give them over to the state, then I’d hold all their relatives in custody while they are investigated for Intolerance and have any children put in care homes to check for Intolerance. Then I’d have their homes burnt down and the ground levelled. And it would be a crime to mention their names. Yessir, I’d teach them to be Intolerant!! And there’s all that hypocrisy that comes with Intolerance, I hate hypocrisy….though sometimes for the Public Good you’ve got to make exceptions!!

            • 😀 😀 😀 You, my friend, have missed your calling in life! You should have been a comedian! I can just picture you on late-night television … you wouldn’t even need script-writers, as you are perfectly capable of producing your own humour as you go! I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my coffee!

But seriously, “lest we become blinkered and a mirror image of those we oppose” is a very real concern, and I have caught myself in this more than a few times. I see it more and more in the Democrats here in the U.S. … we need to be vigilant in order to not become the very thing we loathe. It’s a fine line … a balancing act. Thanks for the humorous reminder … 🙂

Truth be fully known Jill, that was inspired by me, in full male shouting-at-the-tv mode, or dark brooding-in-the-corner-what-I’d-do-if-I-was-in-charge reflections.
As you say it’s a fine line.
Our UK Labour Party is reaching tipping point in this area.
In the classic line from the Pogo Cartoon strip ‘We have met the enemy. And they is us,’

                • I fully understand both the ‘shouting-at-the-television’ and the ‘dark-brooding-in-the-corner’ … I’ve done my share of both. It’s why I gave the television that was once in my bedroom away last year … I found I was waking up and switching on CNN before my feet even hit the floor, and by the time I got into the day, I was in foul humour. Sure, I still read news for several hours a day, still rant and brood, but at least my day doesn’t have to start on that foot!

But even if the comment was inspired by your own actions, it is a lesson that ALL of us need to remember … not to sink to the level of those we eschew. And I love that line from Pogo … have used it a few times in my posts, and think it almost every day! 😀

  2. I am pretty sure these trainings exercises where already planned during the Obama Administration and when his Royal Sadness heard “there were some ships in that area” he just assumed it was due to him (of course) and that they where heading to North Korea because “Let’s Make America Afraid again”

    • Yes, the training exercises were already planned. But nobody made assumptions … the administration specifically stated that the ships were heading toward the Korean peninsula, when in fact they were not. This was an outright lie told, and repeated multiple times, by the Trump regime.
