The Tweet Heard ‘Round The World

Donald Trump breathed new life, if in fact it needed it, into Twitter.  I wonder, when Trump finally dies or fades into oblivion, if Twitter will find itself struggling to stay afloat.  Probably not, but they will no doubt have lost their most prolific and most controversial customer.  This week brought a milestone for the social networking venue … the single most-liked tweet in Twitter history!  And no, it was not one of Trump’s, despite his many “bot” followers.

So, what was the “Tweet Heard ‘Round the World”?  This …

Obama-tweet.pngThe tweet, the first in a series of three, quoted Nelson Mandela and was accompanied by a picture of President Obama smiling with a group of children from different racial backgrounds. It has been liked almost three million times since it was posted on 13 August following the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia. The first tweet, shown above, has been retweeted more than 1.1 million times and liked 2.723 million times as of Tuesday evening.

Look at the picture, read the words, and then compare to the tweet that Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning …

trump-train.jpgSee the difference?  I have long said that President Obama and his family were the embodiment of dignity, class and grace.  Many of my right-leaning friends scoffed and called them names, said they were ‘trash’.  Now, in looking at the two tweets above … who is trash? It is not the colour of one’s skin that sets him apart, and it is not one’s religion that makes him more compassionate.  It is what is inside each person’s heart. Perhaps it is time to take out the trash.

  1. Dear Jill,

It has become obvious to a lot of observers that DDT is insanely jealous of President Obama. He knows that he can never measure up. Then there is that disease of racism that is eating him alive. It is a black president who out classes him on any measure of a man. No matter what DDT does to erase President Obama’s legacy, he can’t erase the fact that President Obama is the better man.

    Hugs, Gronda

    • I fully agree … but it seems as if DDT is actually trying to be the exact opposite of what Obama was … I’ve never seen a man in any form of public service act as crass, rude and despicable as he does. He makes me ashamed. I wonder how his daughter can even stand to acknowledge him as her father. I would have disowned him years ago. Hugs!!!

  2. I have heard intelligent and articulate Americans defend Mr. Trump against all comers. From the outside it is difficult to understand why when you see the knock on effect of his immigration policy on farmers and other tax paying small to medium sized businesses who rely on their employment. In the UK we have a million or two on welfare who feel that they are too good to work in low paid jobs that immigrants with a better work ethic and drive will do willingly. All this to keep out the handful of those who mean harm. We lived in Texas in the 1980s and immigrants from south of the border lived and worked beside Texans as they did in California. They may not have paid tax but the businesses they worked for did. And they also contributed to the economy by paying rent and buying food and other household needs. Farmers are now in the situation of having to leave food to rot in the ground because they cannot find non-immigrants to work their fields as they have done traditionally for generations. The only winners here are the contractors who will eventually build that wall…. unless someone comes to their senses. Sally

  3. I think not a few of us see these men as little boys playing dress-up. The problem is they’re mean and armed little boys. I watched an interview the reporter had with one of them where he laid all his weapons on the bed in his room. excitedly telling what each one was. He was ready to fight a war that he hoped would start through his efforts and those of his idiot friends. Real soldiers don’t go around displaying their weapons. They’re just tools of the trade. These weirdos are probably losers in life who need to feel important and they’re getting help to boost their hurting egos from someone who also needs his ego boosted. It’s so, so sad. —- Suzanne

    • You are quite right … they are mean and not in the least bit funny. How, I wonder, did they come to be this way? For some, perhaps it was their upbringing, but for others that is not the case. Does this suggest that perhaps there is something inherently wrong with them from birth? Who knows?

  4. From now on I refuse to dignify Trump with his title, nor denigrate the job by giving him the title. So, I’m quite sure that Mr Trump has always been jealous of the affection in which so many people held President Obama. I’m also sure he was jealous of the dignified way President Obama behaved during all the times he was thwarted by the Republicans over his care package. They were afraid of his success.
While I won’t say President Obama didn’t make mistakes, he didn’t blame others. Mr Trump’s term so far has been on continual mistake with the man himself acting like a child on Twitter. He showed a blatant disregard for the less well off Americans by trying to push through the replacement care package despite being told how many people would suffer. He’s even managed to alienate some Republicans thanks to that.
Now he’s dividing America along old lines and supporting those who are racist and fascist when he should be the voice of reason for all the people. Again he’ll alienate some Republicans because of that but that no doubt will be fake news as he’d the most beloved person in his own head. Britain holds him in contempt and thinks him a laughing stock only I’m no longer laughing.

    • Y’know, David … I think that Trump saw Obama’s calm demeanor as weakness, whereas I saw it as strength. It takes FAR more strength to remain calm, dignified and speak with reason and respect, as Obama ALWAYS did, than it takes to rant endlessly as Trump does. But to Trump, that is a sign of weakness, whereas he sees his own bluster, threatening and bullying, as strength. Caveman mentality.

And I fully agree with your refusal to call him by his title. I have refused to do so since his election. Not one time have I written the title and the name together, except when I was directly quoting another source. Nor will I … EVER! Sigh.

      Many Many Hugs, dearest David!

  5. Jill, all the money in the world cannot buy class or compassion. Obama showed the way, yet his replacement could not even jump over a very low bar to denounce hatred and bigotry. By the way, The Guardian has a story by someone who was there. It would not shock you to learn the white supremacists were the aggressors. As the head of the NC KKK said, he was glad the woman was killed because she was a communist. These are hate mongers and terrorists. Keith

    • No, no surprise at all. Herb sent me a video last night done by a female reporter who spent time in the company of the white supremacist group during the rally, and it showed them saying the same … that they were glad Heather Heyer was killed. I watched it this morning and it made me lose my appetite for my breakfast. I just cannot comprehend the mentality. I don’t even want to …

      • Jill, PBS did a great piece on what happened in Charlottesville. While there were a few protestors armed with clubs, they were a vast minority. The white supremacists were marching with torches and many with rifles. They were loaded for bear. But, when you strip all of that way – the mission of the white supremacist is ours are the only rights that matter, while the protestors are all rights matter and hate is not the answer. Keith

      • It`s disgusting, that’s what it is. – But what gives me hope is that there are so many people now in the US who are declaring openly that they find it disgusting too. Maybe the Trumpet, crossing one line after the other, went one step too far this time. – Not that I believe they will remove him from office, but if the public opinion tilts, it might help put those “white supremacy”-idiocy where it belongs: in the bin. – Maybe it is because I am Austrian, but those pictures of nazi-flag-waving people absolutely give me the creeps.

  6. Too true. Oh how we have let the children of the world down! What have we taught them, other than how to denigrate and destroy any chance to contribute to an integrated society of people and animals.
The story of Adam and Eve is not so far fetched. The tree of life (forbidden fruit) consumption is only for enlightened individuals! Paradise lost!

    • I saw the most heart-breaking picture today. It showed several state troopers in riot gear with their shields in front of them, and a little kid … maybe 3-4 years old, dressed in a klansman’s outfit, complete with hood. HOW can anybody think that is right? You are right … we have let our children down and we have failed the test of humanity. Not all of us, but society as a whole. 😥

  7. Too true! People like Barack and Nelson (Mandela) are way above Little Donald Trump….hence Little DT’s need to cut them down to his size…else Little DT cannot cope with such Lofty People! Notice how his attacks tend to intensify….because he is unable to realize the futility of his efforts! Poor, pathetic ‘little man’. 😦 Hugs! ❤

    • You are quite right about that! Trump wouldn’t know class if it hit him in the patootie! But I am puzzled as to how he can hear all the criticisms, and yet still think people all love him. He said this morning that “everyone” thought his speech on Saturday was “beautiful”. NO … Nobody thought it was even mildly appropriate and it was criticized by the media, by Congressmen from his own party, and by the public at large. I just do not understand how he can be so blind, deaf and dumb. Sigh. Hugs, dear friend!!!

  8. I never understood, and never will understand (even though I do know it’s all about race) why people insist on calling the Obamas trash, classless, etc. No scandal, never attacking those who attacked them, nothing but class. In the words of the king of bad taste, “sad!”

    • I so agree! There is just no comparison between the Obamas and the Trumps! They criticized Michelle Obama for wearing a sleeveless dress, yet they don’t seem to mind that Melania Trump has posed nude for magazine covers. Double Standard!!!!
