Saturday Surprise!

Good Saturday morn and welcome to Saturday Surprise!  I am still working on a way to make this feature more interactive, at least once in a while, but this past week has been filled with so much detritus that I have barely come up for air, so I hope to bat 🏏 some ideas around this weekend.  Meanwhile, I have a few fun surprises to start our weekend right.

I will start with a confession.Β  I am rapidly losing my sanity, if in fact I ever had any.Β  Two points in case:Β  I thought I had left my cell phone in the kitchen one evening this week, but after dinner when I went to retrieve it, it was gone.Β  I looked upstairs … in every room … even those I had not been in all day.Β  I looked downstairs in every room.Β  I checked the freezer.Β  I checked the laundry.Β  No phone.Β  So finally I asked Chris to call me so that I could trace it by the ring (which was dumb, since I cannot hear it ring unless it is within reach anyway).Β  Suddenly, there was a vibration and an annoying ringer that goes β€œwah wah wah” coming from … you guessed it … my pocket.Β embarrassedAnd the second episode was equally telling of my sanity loss.Β  I went to the grocery on Thursday evening, purchased enough food for our family of three for two weeks, placed it all neatly on the conveyor belt at the checkout aisle, and while I was patiently waiting for the lady ahead of me to finish paying for her food, it suddenly occurred to me that I had left home without either cash or credit card.Β  Nada in the pockets but two sets of keys, a cell phone and inhaler.Β  Fortunately, I live less than a mile from Kroger, so it was a fairly simple matter to resolve, but still … who does that?embarrassed-2And then there was the third, but … I cannot remember what that one was …

Anyway, moving along before I lose my train πŸš‚ of thought again,..

In Japan, once the rice is harvested around this time of year, the rice farmers are left with fields full of straw.Β  In Niigata Prefecture, they have found a unique and fun way to deal with it … they build animals!Β  It is called the β€œWara (rice straw) Art Festival”, and just look at some of the results of their efforts!

wara-1wara-2wara-3wara-4wara-5wara-6wara-7The festival is held every year on August 31st, and local artists build the statues over wooden frames, allowing them to build larger, sturdier statues.

Our friend Keith planted this ‘ear worm’ last week, and it has been stuck in my head all week!Β  So, I am sharing it here because a) I like the song, b) I am hoping that by sharing it with you guys, the ‘ear worm’ will leave me and stick with at least a few of you!

And finally, because it’s late and I am too tired to be any more creative … how about a few adorable critter pictures …

And I’m sorry, folks, but that is all I’ve got for this Saturday!Β  I’ve enjoyed spending a bit of time with you this morning, but it’s a beautiful autumn Saturday morning, and I know you have things to do, places to go, people to see, and life to enjoy!Β  Have a great weekend all!

  1. The grocery store part reminded me of when I was pregnant and forgot my PIN during checkout. I was 8 months pregnant at the time and had a bit of a meltdown over it!

  2. Ah, a little late today…but better late than never….here’s the thirty second limerick…

A phone that turns up in a new place,
    Forgetting one’s money, losing face,
    A straw praying mantis
    Ear worms well planted
Cute kitties for a Saturday taste!

Actually, I think it was a pretty good smile today Jill. I can identify with a lot of that…ha, ha, ha…😹😹😹

Years ago, when I was a mere spring chicken….well forty something, I was a little short on time, had a lot on my mind, and pulled into a MacDonald’s drive through. I ordered as usual, drove up to the first window and paid for my food and then waited behind a car at the second window. I arrived home and walked in, where my partner asked where the burgers were? I looked at him blankly. ‘Oh sh*t, I drove right through the second window without waiting for my order.
I phoned MacDonald’s and sheepishly said ‘ Er, I’m the lady who drove right through without picking up my food,’ I heard giggling at the other end of the phone line…”That’s quite alright ma’am. Did you want to come back now for it? “There were loud guffaws coming from the receiver. I did go back and it was all they could do to keep a straight face. ” They did make a fresh order for me though…an hour had elapsed since the first one!

Have a happy Saturday and Sunday, Jill!

    • I absolutely LOVE the limerick!!! How do you DO that ???

I also had to laugh over your McDonald’s story! I left my money in the ATM machine one time … luckily I caught myself within a few minutes and got right back there before it had a chance to disappear! We just have too much on our minds!

Have a great one, my friend!

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the Saturday Surprise and that you are no longer glum!

Moi? Tell tales??? I know not {cough} of what {cough, choke} of what you speak … Bananas? Do you wish me to send you some bananas? I fear they would blacken on the journey. I … um … let me just say that you are, perhaps, mistaken? {phew} There are times when teamwork is a good thing, wouldn’t you agree?

Now stop making conspiracy theories about bananas and go have a fun weekend! πŸ˜‰

  4. For us retired folks every day is Saturday! But it’s only once a week that we get to read delightful posts like this one! Many thanks for brightening yet another day! And, by the way, have you noticed that the lost article is always, ALWAYS, in the last place you look! (Duhhhhhh! Right?)

  5. Dear Jill,
What a morning. Time is going by way to fast and I have a million things to do. I lost my mind long ago. I have to be very careful where I put things. I am still looking for my favorite top that I somehow misplaced a couple of months ago.
What creativity. It is amazing what those artists were able to create for the Wara Art Festival.I like the praying mantis, the best.

    Hugs, Gronda

    • I can relate! I sometimes put something somewhere and say to myself, “I am putting this right here so that I will remember where I put it.” But … well, you know the rest of the story! πŸ˜‰ We are not getting old, we just have too much going on in our minds to keep up with it all! Have a great weekend! Hugs!

  6. Speaking of going insane and losing your phone, one day I was talking to mum and I started to panic because I had lost my phone. I couldn’t find it anywhere and was looking all around the house. I was telling mum, I can’t find my phone, where is it. Mum simply replied with “umm how did you ring me? aren’t you on it?”…. oh shit well yes I was, I was talking to my mum ON my phone !!!! >.<

oh and those statues are AWESOME.
