Two Western Leaders came to Washington

Last week, the U.S. hosted the leaders of France and Germany. Our friend Keith has written an excellent post, assessing those visits and how different the current U.S. policies are from those of Macron & Merkel. Please take a few minutes to read and think about the direction we are heading, as opposed to most of the rest of the Western nations. Thank you, Keith, for this thoughtful post.

Last week, the two leaders of the western world met with the US President, who has ceded the US role in the world. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, and Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany visited with Donald Trump.

Of course, the US has the most powerful military in the world. We’d better as we spend far more than other countries. Yet, with our pulling back on diplomacy and the number of diplomats, with our imposition of tariffs on even our allies, with our retrenching from global agreements and with an unprecedented level of untruthfulness, we have ceded our global leadership role to China, overall, and Germany and France in the western world. And, while the UK remains important and formidable, I am sad to say Brexit will precipitate its decline from these ranks.

Macron and Merkel beseeched the US President to remain in the Iran Nuclear deal signed…

  1. Dear Jill,

The president reneging on the Iran deal will be among the president’s top 3 worst decisions regarding US national security interests. This will set up the US to go to war with Iran which I am totally against. The president will not be listening to the European leaders but he has already decided to tear up the deal against the advice of his own Defense Secretary General Mattis.

But he is listening to Israel.

    Hugs, Gronda

    • I know, Gronda … I know. He is so determined to “undo” anything and everything that was done during the Obama administration that he is wearing blinders and is unwilling to listen to any advice, even though he cannot possibly understand the consequences of his actions. The Paris Accords, the Iran deal, NAFTA, TPP … he must be stopped, and soon. He does not understand international relations, global dealings, and worse, he does not care to learn. Hugs!!!

  2. Thank-you for introducing me to Keith’s blog. I’m happy to hear that you too are a Gem. My 4 yr. old grandson gave me the name “Gem” when he was but a wee one and I loved it!

    • You are most welcome!!! Keith does excellent work, and he is generally calmer, more logical than I. While I tend to rant, Keith states his point of view with more … dignity, I guess is the word I seek. You might also like Gronda’s blog, if you haven’t already discovered it. She’s like me, a firebrand, but she does excellent, deep research. I think of me, Keith and Gronda as the Three Musketeers … we each have our own style, and complement each other nicely.

Yes, ‘gem’ is a very nice thing to be called, isn’t it?

  3. Thanks Jill. You are a gem. By the way, I spoke with a staff member of your Senator Rob Portman and she told me he supports bringing the Mueller protection bill to the floor of the Senate and would vote for it.

    • Awww … thanks, Keith! Not many call me a gem, and it melts my stodgy ol’ heart!

For a republican in this day and age, Portman is more middle of the road and not altogether a bad guy. I don’t like a number of his positions, especially on fossil fuels and ACA. And his ‘A’ rating with the NRA is no feather in his cap, in my book. However, he did oppose Trump’s Muslim ban, for which I applauded him. As I said, he certainly isn’t the worst of the bunch, but he is among those who are licking Trump’s boots. But I am pleased to know he supports protecting the Mueller investigation, for that is critical, in my book. Thanks for sharing that!
