You Have Got To Be Kidding!!!

I started my afternoon in fine spirits … I really did.  And then, I sat down to troll the news.  It never fails to wreck my mood, but today’s examples of extreme stupidity sent me from laughter to rage in a short 10 minutes … maybe only 5!  So here are the four stories that led to a progressive declension of humour …

I laughed.  🤣 I couldn’t help myself … I laughed so hard that I scared Ollie off my lap! (They aren’t used to hearing me laugh much these days) And then I got choked and coughed for a while.  And then I returned to the story and started at the very beginning to make certain I hadn’t mis-read it.

House Republican Wants American Taxpayers to Crowdfund Trump’s $20 Billion Border Wall

Turns out that U.S. Representative Diane Black from Tennessee has a really ignorant idea for funding Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexican border … We The People, in addition to paying our taxes for Trump’s other egomaniacal purposes, will then donate whatever monies we have left over to build the bloody wall!!! Diane BlackHa ha ha ha … not a snowball’s chance in Hell!!!!  I would donate to hungry children, I would donate to foodbanks and soup kitchens, homeless shelters and medical research facilities, animal shelters … almost anything but Trump’s infernal wall.

First, it has been proven by experts in the field, time and time again, that, a) it is not needed, and b) it will not stop illegal immigration from the south.

Second, wasn’t Mexico supposed to pay for the wall, Donnie?  What happened?  Did you have to eat some words there, Donnie?

Third, the current administration and Congress have been doing everything in their power to hurt We The People, especially the lower income ones.  So, if I have anything to spare, it will go to help people, not to build a useless and costly wall that almost nobody wants except Donnie.

Ms. Black is the typical boot-licking republican congresswoman who threw her full support behind the donor tax cuts in 2017, is against nearly all EPA regulations, and has glowing endoresements from the likes of Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann.  But we needn’t worry, for she will not be back in Congress next year, as she is instead running for governor of Tennessee.  They can have her!

But lest you think there is no reward for donating to the ignominious wall, Ms. Black floated the idea of putting up plaques along the wall to commemorate those who donate.  Um … who would want their name on such a hideous display of inhumanity?

Trump & Co currently claim the wall will cost $20 billion, but more realistic estimates run closer to as much as $75 billion.  With that, every single man, woman and child would have to donate $247.52 in order to pay for the abomination.  That is about … oh … $247.52 more than I would be willing to donate.

And then, this next one traded laughter for an eyeroll 🙄

White House Releases Commemorative Coin for North Korea Talkscommemorative coin

FIRST … there has been no summit as yet.

SECOND … it is unlikely now that there will even BE a summit in June, as originally planned, for Trump and Bolton could not keep their mouths shut, and now Kim Jong-un is considering calling it off.

THIRD … they got Kim’s title wrong on the bloomin’ coin!  Kim is not the Supreme Leader – ‘Chairman’ would have worked just fine. And the ‘U’ in ‘un’ is not supposed to be capitalized!  It’s Kim Jong-un … don’t these people know anything???

I have tried to find out how much we, the taxpayers, paid to have 250 of these dud coins minted, and cannot, but whatever the cost, it was yet another egomaniacal waste of our money that could have been used to feed the poor.

Hear that sound, folks?  That is the growl that has started somewhere at the bottom of my throat and is working its way up …

Assault Weapons Manufacturer Is Upset That School Shootings Are Costing It Money

Say what???

“Vista Outdoor, a major manufacturer of assault weapons, is complaining that school shootings, particularly the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead, is having an adverse impact on its profits.

The company blames “a substantial increase in the use of social media platforms, including blogs, social media websites, and other forms of Internet-based communications, which allow individuals access to a broad audience of consumers.

In the case of the Parkland shooting, Vista Outdoor cites “a campaign…launched on social media seeking the boycott of certain Outdoor Products brands because of their association with the Company and its brands that operate in the shooting sports industry.”” – ThinkProgress, 20 May 2018

Awwww … pobrecitos

And now, folks, with this next one I have gone from laughter to full-scale $%&@#!

NRA President Blames Santa Fe School Shooting On Ritalin

Oliver North“The problem we’ve got is we’re trying like the dickens to treat the symptom without treating the disease. And the disease, in this case, isn’t the Second Amendment. The disease is youngsters who are steeped in a culture of violence, they’ve been drugged in many cases. Nearly all of these perpetrators are male and they’re young teenagers in most cases. Many of these young boys have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten. Now I’m certainly not a doctor, I’m a marine, but I can see those kinds of things happening and endangering those two gals.”

aaurgh

Further, his proposal for a solution … not limiting guns in any reasonable manner, nor limiting who can get their hands on them, or banning assault weapons.  No, ol’ Ollie’s solution is metal detectors in every doorway in every school!  Brilliant, Oliver … we cannot pay our teachers a living wage, cannot afford to upgrade curricula, books and equipment, but we should invest millions, or more likely billions of dollars for bloomin’ metal detectors!!!

And so concludes another episode of America’s Stupidest People.  Thank you for joining us and stay tuned next week …

    • Yep. I could do a weekly feature of America’s Stupidest People and never even have to go looking for them. But it would be too depressing. You are right … given the current Congress and administration, we are NOT represented. In fact, we are scorned and laughed at. Not fun times.

    • Yep, I got hit with it last week, and had 20 today just before 3:00 p.m. rawgod checked it out last week and found that the links lead to a porn site! I don’t know why Akismet isn’t picking them up, though. I caught them pretty quickly and deleted them. Sigh. I’m pretty sure it’s a bot.

  1. A few random thoughts, none as eloquent as yours. #1 Crowdfund Trump’s Border Wall – A better use for my money would even include burning it…though your ideas have more merit. #2 Commemorative Coin for ? Talks – There is not enough space on any coin to support these two egos…hopefully, these minted coins can be recycled into something truly useful. #3 – The only better news here would be that Vista Outdoor has bankrupted and ceased production of assault weapons…and melted existing stock. #4 – NRA”S Oliver North – his solution does not even deserve a minute of serious consideration. My suggestion to him…Go North, much further North. I leave you with these words of Martin Luther King, Jr. : “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” Thank-you and now I need a glass of wine, maybe two!!

    • I fully concur with every single point you make, dear Ellen. The entire world seems to have turned upside down and I feel like a stranger in an alien land … or perhaps an alien in a strange land. Anyway, go join Nan, for she started with the wine as soon as she read my post this morning! I’ll join you both as soon as I get tomorrow’s ‘good people’ post written! 😉

  2. Jill, have you ever read Dr. Seuss’s “Yertle the Turtle?” It was originally referring to Hitlers regime.

    Yertle the Turtle
The eponymous story revolves around Yertle the Turtle, the king of the pond. Dissatisfied with the stone that serves as his throne, he commands the other turtles to stack themselves beneath him so that he can see farther and expand his kingdom. However, the stacked turtles are in excruciating pain and Mack, the turtle at the very bottom of the pile, is suffering to the point of death. Mack asks Yertle for a respite, but Yertle just tells him to be quiet. Then Yertle decides to expand his kingdom and commands more and more turtles to add to his throne. Mack makes a second request for a respite because the increased weight is now causing extreme pain to the turtles at the bottom of the pile, as well as hunger. Again, Yertle yells at Mack to be quiet. Then Yertle notices the moon rising above him as the night approaches. However, before he can give the command, Mack decides he has had enough. He burps, which takes away Yertle’s throne and tosses the turtle king off the turtle stack and into the water, leaving him “King of the Mud” and freeing the others.

The rest of the article about its publication history is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yertle_the_Turtle_and_Other_Stories

I think we have another Yertle on our hands! Or maybe a whole government full of wanna-be Yertles!

  3. Mr North does talk about a culture of violence which we do need to examine . It’s an old nut which has caused many to suggest we should not encourage boys to play shooting games and of course the watching of cowboys and Indians. TV is chock a block full of violence of all sorts and it has got progressively worse. Has Mr North considered how the free and easy distribution of guns might encourage violence ? or is he just fine about that . If on the one hand he is condemning a culture of violence and on the other hand encouraging such a culture he is being hypocritical. Let’s not forget we all could be accused of hypocrisy if we allow the media to feed us with the very violence we abhor.
The roots of humanity are anchored in the violence of the hunt to kill and eat but in these enlightened times we hand over the killing to an unseen industry and the sight of blood is avoided.
I note he mentions attention deficit disorder and the often used drug ritalin , another passing of the blame onto drug use. Once again there is some truth in the fact that drugs affect mental states and alcohol is certainly proof of that fact. Perhaps Mr North would gladly accept the ban of all mind changing drugs including alcohol — I think not ; he must concentrate on his own large part in this and stop making excuses.

    • His job, I believe, is to find as many excuses that do not involve firearms for the madness that abounds in all the school shootings, as well as other episodes of mass shootings, the latest big one being Las Vegas last year. So ol’ Ollie sits all day thinking of excuses, and then labels them “reasons”. But since human nature is pretty much the same around the globe, the reality is the main difference between the U.S. and the rest of the world is the nearly unregulated sale of weapons — even weapons that were only ever intended for the military. And then, when he has fed us a diet of all his excuses, his job is to come up with “solutions” that do not involve the word ‘guns’, thus the suggestions of see-through backpacks, fewer doors, and armed teachers. North is a man without a conscience, and also a man who likes his guns. Remember, he is the man who went to prison for selling guns to the Iran Contras in the 1980s. You are right … there is some validity in the “culture of violence”, as well as in drugs, hormones, negligent parents, etc., but the bottom line is that if these kids cannot get their hands on firearms, they no longer have the ability to plow down dozens in a matter of a minute or two. Mr. North will never admit that, nor will Trump, nor most of the members of Congress. The gun manufacturers would be mad if the did!

      • When it comes to trade and business sides in war mean very little , we supplied many arms to the confederate side in the civil war and our cotton industry was afraid that their supplies might be withheld. It is not unusual for opposing sides to be fighting with weapons made by the same supplier. There is an old unpleasant but often quoted saying ‘ all is fair in love and war ‘. The truth is the gun has a firm foothold among the American public and those who sell them intend to keep it that way regardless of the consequences. It will be interesting to see what happens when fear prevents large numbers of students attending college.

        • Indeed you are right. The ‘gun culture’ isn’t going away anytime soon. I can imagine a scenario that would likely cause some strict regulations to be implemented, if a group managed to infiltrate the capital during a day of debate when all the members were in the rotunda, and plowed down 100 or so of them. (Yes, I likely read too much Clancy) But, short of that, as long as it’s just us peons and our children being killed, nothing will change.

  4. They should make their minds up whether they want the wall or metal detectors. The most ridiculous suggestion I’ve heard is cutting down on the number of doors in schools. Maybe they want to barricade some of the doors so no one with a gun can gain entry. Of course, many couldn’t get out in case of fire either. Ignorance seems to be catching and spreading from the top down. 😦 — Suzanne

    • Neither the wall nor the metal detectors are going to solve any problems. Yep, the “fewer doors” idea was stupid, but no more so than making each child carry a transparent backpack! Who comes up with these ideas, anyway? You and I should hire ourselves out as consultants … I guarantee our ideas would be more effective!
