Sounds of Silence

In a comment earlier this evening, Keith happened to mention Simon & Garfunkel, and immediately this song came to mind … and stayed … and stayed … and so, I am sharing this one with you, dear friends …

The Sound of Silence
Simon & Garfunkel
Produced by Tom Wilson

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by
The flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools”, said I, “You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said:
“The words of the prophets are
Written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence.”

  1. I have been humming this song all day. While overseeing Benjamin’s tubbie time this afternoon, I was singing quite loudly in my less than melodious voice. He said : “Gem, what are you singing?” I replied : “The Sound of Silence.” To which he replied : “It doesn’t sound silent!” I went back to softly humming!

  2. I fell in love with Simon & Garfunkel the first moment that I heard them sing and never stopped! Who can not love “Sound of Silence”, even after over 50 years of listening and loving! There is a lot of history with this song and how it went from “Sounds” to “Sound of Silence”…as any devoted fan knows! The song will be forever remembered for it’s part in the Dustin Hoffman movie,The Graduate. A great album from that movie too. “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme” is another of my favorites. I’m so glad that I didn’t miss the 60’s! Thank-you!

    • Ellen, I love this song as well. I wrote a post about misunderstood lyrics. I read a little boy asked his mother after he heard the song, “Well did he?” She asked what he was talking about. He said “Did Parsley save Rosemary in time?” Keith

      • That’s funny! Sounds like something I would say, for with my lack of hearing, I never ever get lyrics right. There was one line from a song that I kept singing as “Help me Agnes, I’m alive …” and finally one day my daughter corrected me and told me it was, “Heyyy, I’ve looked, all my life …” Oops.

  3. Great song. The GOP needs to adopt it as a campaign slogan. “In the midst of their great leader, Draft-Dodge Donny, betraying America in front of the whole world, the GOP leaders in Congress loudly gave us the reverberating sound of silence.” Lock them ALL up!
