Nightmare in America

A quick glance at tonight’s headlines prove that our world has gone nuts!

  • Trump takes credit for ending nonexistent violent crime wave

  • Taylor Swift endorses Democrat, enrages Nazis; “Aryan goddess” no more

  • Melania Trump doesn’t really care what U think about her offensive African safari outfit

  • Trump trolls women again, this time over Kavanaugh vote

  • Coal Is Killing the Planet. Trump Loves It

  • Trump Gives Dictators the Green Light

  • Trump uses swearing-in ceremony to apologize to Kavanaugh

Think back two or three years, if you can, to a saner time.  Would any of these stories have seemed ‘normal’ back then?  The ‘president’ of the United States making up a crime wave so he can take credit for fixing a problem that never happened, and then trolling women and applauding the death of the planet and apologizing to a man who deserves no apology?  Can you imagine Michelle Obama offending an entire race of people and thumbing her nose at her critics?  Can you imagine Michelle Obama wearing a coat that said “I don’t really care, do U?” to visit immigrant children who had been taken from their parents for no reason, and were being kept in cages?  The world is going nuts and the Nazis are offended because some young singer endorses a democrat????  Seriously???

No, don’t bother pinching yourself … I have tried that, and every morning when I wake up, I’ve hoped to find this was all a bad, bad nightmare, but the results are always the same, and after nearly two years, I’ve concluded that unless my name is Rip Van Winkle, this is the new ‘real world’.  It is not, as Aldous Huxley envisioned, a Brave New World, but simply a crazy new world, and one that is applauded by some who were apparently bored with sanity, for Trump’s approval ratings have been on the rise for a week and are as high as they have been since the first month he was in office.

What’s to love, you ask?  Well, apparently some growing portion of this nation has decided that they want a ‘leader’ who …

  • Screams and rages instead of engaging in normal speech
  • Treats women as second-class citizens and sex objects without apology
  • Commends white supremacist hate groups
  • Lies, and covers those lies with more lies
  • Ignores real crises and addresses imaginary ones
  • Verbally assaults allies while pandering to enemies
  • Cheats hardworking people, as well as the U.S. government he is the head of
  • Is a bigot and a bully

And I could go on, but you get the picture.  It’s hard to believe that just a few short years ago we had a President and First Lady who were dignified, intelligent, kind and cared about the people of this nation, isn’t it?  But some people must have found that too boring, too mundane … or perhaps just too black.  And so, each morning we wake and find ourselves somewhere between the Land of Oz and Dystopia.

The many faces of Donald Trump:

I have read a number of articles today that say Trump’s rants against Dr. Christine Ford, his unsubstantiated conspiracy claims against democrats, and his rants against women in general last week are actually helping the republican candidates running in the mid-terms.  Say WHAT???  Donald Trump … the so-called president of the United States, a nation of some 320 million people … stands on a stage and mocks a woman who is the victim of sexual assault … proudly parades an an alcoholic sexual predator and leads him to the Supreme Court … rants and rages against any and all women simply for being women … and this is HELPING the GOP candidates?  People … somebody has got their heads screwed on backward!  Somebody … lots of somebodies, apparently, have traded their bloomin’ brains for a box of flippin’ Cracker Jacks!

When Trump first took office, and for a while beyond that, I believed that he would be removed from office before he could do lasting damage.  I foresaw impeachment in the cards (remind me to get a new deck of cards!) and thought his ‘executive orders’ could easily enough be reversed by the next president, probably before the end of 2017.  Whew!  I was wrong, wrong, and wrong.  Here we are nearly at the end of 2018 and he has dug in deep.  What I hadn’t foreseen was that the members of Congress who were supposed to be overseeing him, would instead say “Yessir, Mr. Trump, sir … how far you want me to bend over … how high you want me to jump, sir, Mr. Trump, sir.”  Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Jeff Flake, Susan Collins, Chuck Grassley … every morning they get on their knees and lick Donald Trump’s filthy dirty boots, and this nation will never be the same, for they have handed him the keys to the kingdom and he has shat all over it.

Meanwhile, we wake every morning with trepidation, wondering what new horrors await us, and we find our ways to cope with life in the Era of Trump.  Some drink too much, some take drugs, some beat their wives or children, some cry a lot, while some of us internalize and simply hope each night when we go to bed that we won’t awaken in the morning, for we know by now that the nightmare is here to stay.  This is the legacy of Donald Trump, folks.

  1. Meanwhile, there is still no word from the Saviour (Robert Mueller III). There is no new leader to oppose DJT, to focus the minds and votes of those who want to silence the Orange Wave. There is no answer to the fake news that is being spread throughout the land. While there are many voices in the wilderness, there is not One Voice saying there must be Real Change.
Americans have become sheep, willing to wait for the result of elections they cannot depend on to be free of Russian interference.
And meanwhile, the Truck keeps Dumping its Junk over the land, and in the seas and oceans. And the garbage is being spread all over the world. America is no longer the Voice of freedom, or of democracy. Its roar has become a whimper.
America, where are you now, don’t you care about your sons and daughters? Don’t you know we need you now, we can’t fight alone against the Monster… Steppenwolf, 1968.

    • Actually, I have begun to wonder if Bob Mueller has been abducted by the Saudis! As to that loud, united voice … if, as I suspect, Trump’s primary goal this year has been to cause such rifts that there is no cohesion anywhere, then he has likely succeeded. I think the Democratic Party is bouncing about without much national direction. On the state levels, they seem to be doing better, getting their act together, but on the national level, you are right … there is no clear-cut candidate to challenge Trump in 2020 and the party seems to be in limbo. Many here have, indeed, become sheeple who just keep sharing pictures of their kids, their lunch, and their dog in hopes that this will all just go away, somehow work itself out. There are lessons to have been learned from the 1930s, but we failed to learn them.

“Truck keeps Dumping its Junk” … good one!

  2. Dear Jill,
We need to translate for the rest of the world what between what the president and his sycophant GOP lawmakers says publicly and what reality is.

For example when they say the women protesters are = mob rule, when the reality is that they are so scared of those women they are peeing in their pants. They’ve seen the polls. Women were not happy with the handling of confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh. Those protesters chasing them into the men’s restrooms got their attention.

Recent polls show that 63% of women plan to vote for Democratic candidates. Oops!

They apologized to Judge Kavanaugh for his mistreatment as the president proclaimed the judge’s innocence.
Reality is that the GOP leaders need to get their base out to the polls to mitigate their anticipated huge losses, in at least the House of Representatives. They are desperately trying to hang on to their majority in the US Senate in a year when the election map favors the Republican Party.

In short, they are trying to motivate their base of voters which is now a true minority, to get out and vote. They are looking for a foil.

All they’ve accomplished is to further stoke women’s anger. They have every reason to be running scared. This just drives home the point that we need to get out and vote this November 2018. Let’s be their worst nightmare.

    Hugs, Gronda

  3. Excellent essay. These are serious times. Thank you for articulating it so well.
I agree with John above. I am simply hanging onto the belief that Americans will put a stop to this destruction with the mid term elections, and begin the years long repairs needed to mend America. A white knuckle holding onto for me. And if the election fails….

  4. This is not crazy Jill. It is evil, in all its glory, parading its grip on America with spritely glee.
Step back for a moment… ‘Wrong’ is the new ‘Right!’
Anyone notice a biblical ‘AntiChrist’ figure in all of this turmoil?
I am not religious in the slightest, but at the same time, I do know what is written in the Bible, and some of that prophesy from the book of Daniel, and the book of Revelation is frighteningly coming to pass… Examples

Two thirds of the creatures of the sea shall die and… (Environmental Collapse)

Men who are Christian, shall lose their heads… (ISIS)

The 13 horns shall lose one… (Brexit)

The Antichrist shall appear, and he is a man who comes on a white horse, offering Peace… (guess who)

And they will shout *Peace, Peace,” but there will be no peace… (War is coming as surely as I am writing this).

I do not have absolute correct words here, without references in front of me… But people should go have a look at the book of Daniel, and Revelation. While some of it is a bit cryptic because a plague of giant locusts that breath fire across the desert is more likely to be military helicopters engaging in war, there is much there in plain writing too.

    • As an aside to this, and I am not having a go at meat eaters because I am a Vegan, I had a rather uncomfortable exchange with a right wing Texan Trumpite last night on Twitter. He was attacking the report from the IPCC Conference in S. Korea that said to help reduce Carbon emissions, we need to stop eating meat as it could improve things immediately. And let’s face it, that is sensible, because it is an easy thing for everyone to cut down with no ill effects. Meat once per month from a healthy organically raised source will give you all the amino acids you need.

This fella launched into an attack on Vegans. So I took him on. I won’t bore you with the details, but his determination that cattle raising (and all the feed lot stuff that implies) should be upscaled exponentially, was actually quite frightening.

The IPCC reports coming this year are predicting a catastrophic collapse of wildlife systems by 2026 if we don’t do something, and raising farm animals is one of the largest destructor of habitat, never mind the climate.

People, we are in the grip of a battle for our earth and our own survival here. This is not far away, in some other place. It is outside your door waiting to grab you by the neck the minute you open it. 😖

      • Remember a day, way back when we were children, when people respected others and wouldn’t have dreamed of being rude to them based on them not eating meat? Sheesh … I tell ya, the world has lost it’s flippin’ marbles! I have heard it said, also, that if we ate less meat it would help reduce carbon emmissions. Admittedly, I am a creature of habit and one of those habits is typically eating either chicken, or fish once a day, sometimes, but much more rarely, beef. But, I also believe in doing my part to try to save the environment. Sigh. I gave up my car, turn my thermostat up in the summer, down in the winter. Now meat. Sigh. I could drag this one on for a bit, but I’ll just say that I agree with you, but am not likely to completely give up at least fish. However, I’m not sure why somebody felt it was his duty to take you on and be rude because you choose not to eat meat? People just seem to be always in fight mode these days. Sigh. Frankly, it’s tiresome … and depressing.

    • I long ago left any belief in the bible in a virtual trashcan. However, I’m very familiar with the “end time” prophecies and although I put no faith in them, I find it amazing that tRumpsky supporters, many of which are Evangelical Christians, are blind to them.

    • I would agree that it is evil, but it is also crazy … just the sheer volume of things that happen in the course of a day that we never would have dreamed of a few short years ago. I can’t speak to any biblical prophesies, for I am ignorant (blissfully so) on that topic, but I know that something will need to change soon, else we are going to have a dictator making and playing by his own rules before 2020, and at that point, IF there is even an election, it will be a dog & pony show. Sigh. And if the U.S. keeps burying it’s head in the sand on climate change, none of it will matter anyway, I suppose.

  5. HAHA!!! Just too many LIES and mental illness to address. Jill, you need help. Maybe take up knitting. You could knit yourself one of those pink pussy hats and go find a march that blames President Trump and the patriarchy for all of the ills in the world. Oops, my toxic masculinity is showing.

    • Thank you so much for your superb example of the functioning of a mind that lacks empathy, reason, logic and plain human decency. I think you should donate your body to science, so your mind can be studied for defects and gene mutations of the areas of the brain that cause aggression and hostility. That way, at least you could do one good thing in service to humanity and goodwill.
