In the mood for some Chicago tonight? I was, and I was torn between this one, Hard to Say I’m Sorry, and If You Leave Me Now. I didn’t really find any fascinating facts related to the creation or performing of this song, but I am always amazed when a musician from my youth who I haven’t seen in a while (the singer, not my youth, although I haven’t seen that lately either) shows up looking like an old man/woman. What happened??? Peter Cetera (below) at a young age, and more recently. Although he hasn’t aged badly, given that he is 74 years old!
Is it really the same person?
Hard to Say I’m Sorry
Chicago
Everybody needs a little time away
I heard her say, from each other
Even lovers need a holiday
Far away from each other
Hold me now
It’s hard for me to say I’m sorry
I just want you to stay
After all that we’ve been through
I will make it up to you, I promise to
And after all that’s been said and done
You’re just a part of me, I can’t let go
Couldn’t stand to be kept away
Just for the day, from your body
Wouldn’t wanna be swept away
Far away, from the one that I love
Hold me now
It’s hard for me to say I’m sorry
I just want you to know
Hold me now
I really wanna tell you I’m sorry
I could never let you go
After all that we’ve been through
I will make it up to you, I promise to
And after all that’s been said and done
You’re just a part of me, I can’t let go
After all that we’ve been through
I will make it up to you, I promise to
You’re gonna be the lucky one
When we get there, gonna jump in the air
No one’ll see us ’cause there’s nobody there
After all you know, we really don’t care
Hold on, I’m gonna take you there
Written by Peter Cetera and David Foster

I am so glad you are enjoying it! And WELCOME!!! I started it a few months ago, thinking it would only be for a day or two, but I am enjoying it, and my readers seem to be also, so for the time being, it goes on! Stay tuned, and feel free to voice any requests, understanding that I will only play music that I actually like 😉

I like this Chicago song, but love “If You Leave Me Now”…but, neither is on my mind today. Poor Benjamin had to listen to me humming and singing one song all day. In exasperation, he finally placed his little hands on my cheeks, looked me in the eyes and said : “ENOUGH!” That is what we say to my daughter’s dog, when she won’t stop barking! On this day in 1997, John Denver died when the plane that he was piloting crashed. I love John Denver and listen to him often. Now, if you will indulge my propensity for loquacity, I will give you lots of useless though interesting trivia. I love Denver’s 1996 song “Leaving On a Jet Plane”…admittedly, I love the PP&M version best. However, I absolutely loved the time that Denver sang this with Cass Elliot on the pilot episode of Burt Sugarman’s show, The Midnight Special on August 19, 1972. You are probably wondering how I remember the date…it holds great personal significance for me, but I will not go into that. The premiere had Wolfman Jack as the narrator, a role that he continued on the shows that followed, and John Denver was the guest host. As you may recall, 1972 was a Presidential election year, with Nixon and McGovern vying for the POTUS position and you know how that ended! The pilot episode centered around encouraging young people to register and vote, as the voting age had just been lowered to 18. Some of the guests that I remember : The Everly Brothers, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt and Helen Reddy (she sang “I Am Woman”, another favorite). But the highlight, for me, was Denver and Cass singing this song together. I believe that you can still find their performance on YouTube, but not the entire show. In a tribute to John Denver, do listen. Thank-you!

Good Grief, the 1966 song, not 1996! FYI…it was a #1 hit for Peter, Paul and Mary.

If I had realized yesterday that it was the anniversary of his death, I would have done something by him, probably Annie’s Song. But, I can do a belated tribute, and I think the clip of him and Mama Cass singing Jet Plane is a great one! Thank you for pointing me in that direction, and stay tuned at 11 tomorrow morning!
I well remember ’72 … although never a republican, I liked Nixon and it was my first time to vote. I don’t regret that vote … Nixon did a lot of good, despite Watergate and Cambodia. And my older son was born in 1972. Memories, eh? Thanks for sharing your propensity for loquacity … I always learn from you!

Oh, I binge listened to both songs back in the 80’s when you still had cassettes and records 😊 and no streaming service in sight 😂

And I remember when 8-tracks first came out and for the first time, there was a way to listen to a recording in the car! From vinyl to iPod in just 50 years! What next, I wonder?
