♫ One Less Bell To Answer ♫

This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.  Originally written in 1967 for Keely Smith, she never recorded it, and it was re-discovered two years later by The 5th Dimension.

Hal David on how he came up with the lyrics for this song: “I paid attention to what people said. One time I was at a dinner party when it was announced someone wasn’t turning up, and the hostess said: ‘that’s one less bell to answer’. I went home and wrote ‘One Less Bell To Answer’ – ‘one less spells the answer. One less egg to fry.'”

It’s not exactly a cheerful song, being about a lost love, trying to believe that it’s all for the best, yet failing miserably.  But, I like the tune and lead singer Marilyn McCoo does it well.

One Less Bell to Answer
The 5th Dimension

One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry
(Cry, cry, no more laughter) I should be happy
(Oh, why did he go)

Since he left my life’s so empty
Though I try to forget it just can’t be done
Each time the doorbell rings I still run
I don’t know how in the world

To stop thinking of him
‘Cause I still love him so
I spend each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out

One less man to pick up after
No more laughter, no more love
Since he went away (he went away)
(One less bell to answer) Why did he leave me
(Why, why, why did he leave)
(One less bell to answer)
Now I’ve got one less egg to fry
One less egg to fry
(Why, why, why did he leave) And all I do is cry
(One less bell to answer) Because a man told me goodbye
(Why, why, why did he leave)
(One less bell to answer) Somebody tell me please
Where did he go, why did he go
(Why, why, why did he leave) How could he leave me

  1. Jill, great song by a great duo and sung by a great group. It is sad, but these kinds of songs resonate sometimes more than happy ones. Jimmy Webb, who wrote “Up, up and away,” for them said he had a huge crush on Marilyn McCoo. We saw Webb as he did a tribute tour for Glenn Campbell, since he wrote his geography songs for him. • I didn’t know that about Jimmy Webb! Thanks for sharing! You have seen a lot of musicians in concert. Would you believe, I have never been to a concert? Large crowds and I don’t get along, although there are many I would have loved to see.
