Hey Friends! I’ve been ranting ’til my chest aches and I’m in the mood for me some Elton John tonight, what do you think?
Written, as are most of Elton’s songs, by Bernie Taupin, the song came to life in October 1970 as the B-side to Take Me to the Pilot. Both songs received airplay, but Your Song was preferred by disc jockeys and replaced Take Me to the Pilot as the A-side, eventually making it to number eight on the Billboard chart. The song also peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart, as well as charting in the top 10 in several other countries.
Your Song was first released by American rock band Three Dog Night in March 1970 on their third studio album, It Ain’t Easy. John was an opening act for the band at the time and allowed them to record it. They did not release it as a single as they wanted to let John, then an upcoming artist, have a go with it.
In 1998, Your Song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2004 the song was placed at number 137 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”, as well as in its 2010 list.
Your Song
Elton John
It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I’m not one of those who can easily hide
I don’t have much money, but boy if I did
I’d buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor, but, but then again, no
Or a woman who makes potions on a traveling show
I know it’s not much, but it’s the best I can do
My gift is my song, and this one’s for you
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world
I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well, a few of the verses, well, they’ve got me quite cross
But the sun’s been quite kind while I wrote this song
It’s for people like you that keep it turned on
So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
You see, I’ve forgotten if they’re green or they’re blue
Anyway, the thing is, what I really mean
It’s yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen
And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, now you’re in the world
I hope you don’t mind
I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is, now you’re in, you’re in, you’re in, you’re in the world

It was released as a stand-alone single in November 1973 with the song “Ho, Ho, Ho (Who’d Be a Turkey at Christmas)” as the B-side–this is the song I mean, on the back of Step Into Christmas, which implies I own or owned the single. Hmm–I’ll go look maybe.

I always loved him, and this was not my fave, but it was really a sort of milestone and such a part of the culture. One I love secretly is an obscure christmas song by him that was originally a B-side, about sitting there rather drunk and having santa actually come down the fireplace–

I don’t think I ever heard that one … at least I don’t recall hearing of it. I’ll check it out in a bit!

I had never heard that one! I just Googled it and listened to it … very different from much of Elton’s other work!

Yes, I was fourteen when this song began getting playtime, and I thought it was a sweet and gentle song, a nice change from Black Sabbath, the Stones, and the Who.

Quite so! I never cared for Black Sabbath, only liked a few of the Stones songs, and didn’t much get into the Who, but Elton was always on my radar! I was 19 and had a husband and child by the time this came out. Where have the years gone?

Years? The days are streaking past like they’re in a drag race, gone in five seconds. But yes, where have the years gone?

The older we get, the faster time spins. It is only a small blip from one new year to the next and you’re right … the days are shorter … I think there’s a conspiracy to rob us of time! 😉
