I’ve mentioned before that I am partly deaf … and thus I get most song lyrics totally wrong until I look them up online. For many years, I thought this song was “Come Break My Heart”, until one day my daughter happened to hear me singing it and corrected my misguided notion. I always wondered why somebody would ask for their heart to be broken. 🙄
Diane Warren wrote Un-Break My Heart in 1995. When asked about her songwriting process, she said that songs usually come to her from a title, a chorus, or a drum beat. Un-Break My Heart was conceived from its title, and, according to Warren, “it popped into my head, and I thought, ‘I don’t think I’ve heard that before, that’s kind of interesting.’ I started playing around on the piano with these chords and did a key change, and then I knew, ‘OK, this is magic.'” Warren further explained that she wrote Un-Break My Heart as a ballad and dance song, because that was the way she heard it.
When Un-Break My Heart was sent to Tony Braxton, she expressed dislike for the song. According to Warren, “Toni hated the song. She didn’t want to do it.” L.A. Reid, president of Arista Records, was able to convince Braxton to record it, and it later became her signature song.
Spin journalist Charles Aaron positively reviewed the song and joked: “this exquisitely crafted, heart-pumping l-u-v song has been droning in the produce department of my grocery store for about a year now, but I’d just like to go on record as saying that if it ever stops, I’ll really be heartbroken.”
Un-Break My Heart
Toni Braxton
Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me
Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart
Take back that sad word goodbye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don’t leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can’t forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me
Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart
Don’t leave me in all this pain
Don’t leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me
Un-break my heart
Say you’ll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my
Un-break my heart, oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Un-break my heart, sweet darlin’
Without you I just can’t go on
Can’t go on

LoL. Only you can let someone break your heart. I wish I had learned that before ever I fell in love. But no one tells us, particularly our parents. Why didn’t they warn us? And do we warn our children? Probably not. Most of us haven’t figured it out yet.
We should have let our hearts get broken more often as kids. We should not have let our parents try to protect us. Experience is the best teacher. And basically, come break our hearts is really the true way to say it.

Even if they warned us, would we’ve listened? Nothing replaces experience in life, warts and all. Come break my heart is more true to form, lol.

You’ve got that right! We don’t learn from the experience of others, but have to go through the ‘school of hard knocks’ ourselves.

This is true. When people say “He broke my heart”, I always think they should be saying “I allowed him to break my heart”, for we cannot control what others do, only our responses to them.

Exactly. Have you explained that to Miss Goose?

Just don’t crack her heart, please. It doesn’t heal as well as it used to. We need her whole!
