♫ Best Of My Love ♫

After last night’s music post in which I mentioned Richard Marx, I had his Right Here Waiting For You running through my head all day, so tonight I began, fully intending to use that one for this post.  I did the background research, found a good version of the song, and had the post nearly ready to go, when I thought I better just check and make sure I hadn’t already used that one.  Long story short, I played that one on November 14, 2018 … just three months ago!  Wouldn’t you think I could remember?  Sigh.  And so it happens that I had to start all over and tonight I bring you … The Eagles!

This song is often played at weddings and anywhere else one wants to demonstrate affection, but it’s really a breakup song: “You see it your way, and I see it mine, and we both see it slipping away.” No happy ending here, just a guy who gave it his best, but things didn’t work out.

According to Don Henley, he Souther and Frey wrote some of the lyrics over libations at the Los Angeles restaurant Dan Tana’s where they were regulars. There, they studied women and relationships. Henley says they were “typical, frustrated, young men” at the time.

J.D. Souther, however, remembers it differently, saying …

“Glenn found the tune; the tune I think came from a Fred Neil record… We were working on that album (On the Border) and came to London. The three of us were writing it and were on deadline to get it finished. I don’t know where we got the inspiration.”

‘Twould seem that I’m not the only one with a memory problem!

Best of My Love
Eagles

Every night
I’m lying in bed
Holdin’ you close in my dreams
Thinkin’ about all the things that we said
And comin’ apart at the seams
We try to talk it over
But the words come out too rough
I know you were tryin’
To give me the best of your love

Beautiful faces
Loud empty places
Look at the way that we live
Wastin’ our time
On cheap talk and wine
Left us so little to give

The same old crowd
Was like a cold dark cloud
That we could never rise above
But here in my heart
I give you the best of my love

Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)

I’m goin’ back in time
And it’s a sweet dream
It was a quiet night
And I would be alright
If I could go on sleeping

But every morning’
I wake up and worry
What’s gonna happen today
You see it your way
And I see it mine
But we both see it slippin’ away

You know, we always had each other, baby
I guess that wasn’t enough
Oh oh, but here in my heart
I give you the best of my love
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’
Every night and day
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’ (oh oh)
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’
You get the best of my love (the best of my love)
Oh, sweet darlin’

  2. I will not quibble over your choice today, I wasn’t remotely expecting to hear a belated Lesley Gore tribute…hoping maybe, but certainly not expecting one after you said she wasn’t a favorite of yours! Anyway, tribute accomplished, Lesley and I partied together last night. I was, however, expecting to find Richard Marx’s “Right Here Waiting For You”, it bears repeating as you have been known to do…I’m imaging John Lennon. I’ll accept and appreciate this Eagles song, they are always enjoyable. Speaking of joy, Joyroses posted a great song today too! Thank-you! P.S. In the interests of promoting National Random Acts of Kindness Day, I should probably delete this unkind comment. Please consider it as being kindly meant, although that does sound rather hollow even to me. I’m much kinder when I remain quiet!

    • Oooohhh … the lady is unhappy! Y’know, I asked myself last night if I should play a belated tribute to Leslie Gore, and I said to myself, “Nah … it’s too late now. Just mark it on the calendar for next year.” And so, yet again I have disappointed my good friend. And yes, I said she wasn’t a favourite, but I did not say I didn’t like her. I will play a tribute to her ON TIME next year! And then I doubled the damage by not playing Richard Marx. Oh woe, Oh woe, Oh Thrice Times Woe!!! I hang my head in shame! Can I ever be forgiven? I shall check out Joyroses song in just a bit, when I finish my work for the night, and after that, I shall don my hairshirt and self-castigate for an hour or two before allowing myself sleep. 🤣
