Released in 1957, this was Mathis’ first #1 hit single and was included on his compilation Johnny’s Greatest Hits, which is regarded as the original Greatest Hits album. It was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1998. The song reached No. 4 on Billboard‘s Best Sellers in Stores survey, along with its flip “The Twelfth of Never”, which was the song I actually intended to play tonight, but when I listened to it, it made me sad, so I opted for this one instead.
Chances Are
Johnny Mathis
Chances are ’cause I wear a silly grin
The moment you come into view
Chances are you think that I’m in love with you
Just because my composure sort of slips
The moment that your lips meet mine
Chances are you think my heart’s your Valentine
In the magic of moonlight when I sigh, hold me close, dear
Chances are you believe the stars that fill the skies are in my eyes
Guess you feel you’ll always be the one and only one for me
And if you think you could
Well, chances are your chances are awfully good
Chances are you believe the stars that fill the skies are in my eyes
Guess you feel you’ll always be the one and only one for me
And if you think you could
Well, chances are your chances are awfully good
The chances are your chances are awfully good

I’m so glad you liked it! Are things getting tense over there as I’ve been reading? Keep safe, my friend.

The trouble started with Kashmir which has long been a problem as both countries claim it and it’s on the Indian side. A group of terrorists has been training in Pakistan and one had killed a truck full of Indian soldiers in Kashmir by driving a suicide car into the truck. Forty were killed as well as the driver of the car. India retaliated by bombing a training camp of terrorists. One Indian Airforce plane was shot down and the pilot was captured by the Pakistanis. The Pakistanis retaliated by bombing places in Kashmir. Hopefully, both sides will have talks instead of a war. Both countries have nuclear bombs so it’s vital they de-escalate. 😦 — Suzanne

I do hope there are some cooler heads on both sides, for the last thing this globe needs is for people to start threatening … or worse … to use nuclear weapons. I rue the day they were ever invented! Thanks for the easy-to-understand summary! I greatly appreciate it!

Oh, yes! I think I once told you… that I was living in NJ, as a teenager. Johnny Mathis was playing at the Garden State Arts Center. I couldn’t get anyone to go with me. So, I was 17 and I drove down to the Jersey shore to the Garden State arts Center, by myself.
I saw him sing, “Chances Are” wearing a tuxedo and with a full orchestra accompanying him! I sat in the center, third row back! He was incredible!!! 💙

What an awesome memory!!! You got lucky … third row back! I’m so glad the song brought that memory back to the forefront of your mind. Tell me … did he also sing the Twelfth of Never that night? I love that one!

I’m sure he did!!!!
A security guard pulled me aside and sold me the ticket…. for ten bucks! It was a single seat, right smack in the middle…three rows back! Yes, I got lucky! CHANCES ARE was my favorite!
Just for you…..

The security guard must have thought you were one cute chick!!! Thank you for the song … I do so love this one! I was singing it in the shower last night, but somehow he does a better job of it than I do! 🤣

Well, this is a song that fires up the ol’ wayback machine. Mom loved listening to music as she did things around the house when I was a child. Johnny Mathis was/is one of her favorites, and “Chances Are” was a standard song in her rotation. As I grew older and learn more about music and singing, I came to think, wow, that guy has a smooth, graceful voice. Thinking more on it, I admire how he imparts so much nuance in the notes he sings, conveying powerful sentiments and insights into simple words.
My favorite stanza, one that I often sing to myself is, are those opening lines. “Chances are ’cause I wear a silly grin,
The moment you come into view, Chances are you think that I’m in love with you.” Beautiful observation, lyrics, and music, wonderfully executed.
Cheers

Ah yes, I remember you telling me about your mom listening to music as she went about her house chores. I do the same, only with earbuds or headphones, so nobody else knows what I’m listening to 😉 I do love Mathis’ voice, and my favourite line is also the one about the silly grin. I think people in love ought to wear a silly grin!

Thanks, Jill,
This is a much better production of the song I found, and of which we spoke, last time you played Johnny Mathis. Now I know why I loved it then, and still love it now.

I’m glad you found this one to be better! Usually I find the “official video” has the best sound quality. ♫

I never look for official things, I usually find them untrustworthy, lol.
