♫ Sacrifice ♫

When I am down, I turn to either Motown or Elton to cheer me.  Sure, there are others, but those are my ‘go-to’ choices.  Every time I have an Elton song in my head, though, I find that I have already played it here.  But tonight, I was whistling (I sing when I’m happy, whistle when I’m not) Elton’s Sacrifice, figured I had probably already posted it at least once, and found that … Lo and Behold, I had not!

As is the case with most of Elton’s songs, the lyrics are by Bernie Taupin and the music by Elton.  It was inspired both by the Aretha Franklin song Do Right Woman, Do Right Man and described as a Percy Sledge song by Elton John.

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s rather a sad song and I was hoping for one to give me good cheer.  Oh well.

Sacrifice
Elton John

It’s a human sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation’s strong

Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceit comes calling
And negativity lands

Cold, cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better, baby
Just passing through

And it’s no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It’s two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it’s no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It’s no sacrifice at all

Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act

We lose direction
No stone unturned
No tears to damn you
When jealousy burns

Cold, cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better, baby
Just passing through

And it’s no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It’s two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it’s no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It’s no sacrifice at all

Cold, cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better, baby
Just passing through

And it’s no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It’s two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it’s no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It’s no sacrifice at all

No sacrifice at all
No sacrifice at all
No sacrifice at all
No sacrifice at all

  1. Jill, thanks for the background on this meaningful song. He has many that are beneath the most popular which resonate. For example, this song is far more preferable than “Crocodile Rock.” Keith

  2. A BIG favourite of mine along with I guess that’s why they call it the Blues, Sad Songs, Someone saved my life tonight and more recently You Got to love someone. Hugely talented writer and hugely talented singer have entertained for years.Thank you

    • Who could not love Elton, right? I’m not crazy about some of his earlier works, but I do love most of his songs … glad you liked this one! I played it hoping to get “Blackbird” out of my head, but … sigh … it’s still stuck in there.
