♫ Build Me Up Buttercup ♫

As I mentioned earlier in the week, while I’m not exactly opening up a request line, I am attuned to your suggestions, and if I like what you suggest, I will play it.  When I played  a song on the last day of April by Brenton Wood, it prompted a mention by friend and soul-sister Patty of a song I haven’t heard in years, Build Me Up Buttercup.

Released in 1968, this was written by Mike D’Abo and Tony Macaulay. D’Abo was lead singer of Manfred Mann, and Macaulay was a successful songwriter who also wrote The Foundations hit Baby Now That I’ve Found You as well as songs by The Hollies, Andy Williams and The New Seekers.

Just for you, Patty …

Build Me Up Buttercup
The Foundations

Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around?
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don’t break my heart

“I’ll be over at ten, ” you told me time and again
But you’re late, I wait around and then (bah dah dah)
I went to the door, I can’t take any more
It’s not you, you let me down again

baby, baby, try to find
(Hey, hey, hey) a little time and I’ll make you mine
(Hey, hey, hey) I’ll be home
I’ll be beside the phone waiting for you
Ooh ooh ooh, ooh ooh ooh

Why do you build me up (build me up) buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around?
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup, don’t break my heart

You were my toy but I could be the boy you adore
If you’d just let me know (bah dah dah)
Although you’re untrue, I’m attracted to you all the more
Why do I need you so?

baby, baby, try to find

I, I, I need you more than anyone, baby
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (build me up) buttercup

  1. I completely missed this yesterday, actually I missed just about everything online yesterday. There were Legos that needed building, Play-Doh that needed molding, games that needed to be played, and adventures that had to be taken. If I had taken the time to listen and comment, I would have appreciated this song. However, I still would have chided you for missing two memorable birthdays. Pete Seeger’s 100th birthday was most likely remembered and celebrated by many and he has had his moments in the sun here as well. It is of little doubt that Bing Crosby’s 116th birthday was noted by many other than myself. I grew up listening to Bing sing, a favorite of my Father and with a speaking voice reminiscent of his too. If I were to choose a favorite song by Bing, it would be a Christmas one. “Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth)”, a duet with the then very young David Bowie in 1977. It was recorded for Bing’s “Merrie Olde Christmas” show that had yet to be shown when Bing died in October of that year. You might consider adding this to your list for songs in December, don’t worry though…I will remind you! Thank-you!

    • I am so glad you spent the day building with Legos, moulding with Play-Doh and having adventures, especially in light of how the next day went. I hang my head in shame 😔 for having, yet again, disappointed you! To think that I missed an opportunity to pay tribute to those two awesome performers, and instead, I played “Build Me Up Buttercup” … how can you stand to be my friend? How can you tolerate the likes of me? How can you possibly forgive me??? Yes, you might just as well start now making a list of songs you want me to play in December … only one caveat … no deeply religious songs, okay? Hugs, my friend!

  2. A fantastic record, my toes are still twiddling after half an hour. I thought this was from when I first joined the RAF but have reconsidered when I pictured myself having a pint in a pub with two friends when this was on.I was still underage.Only one of my friends joined up and that was 6 months after me.
