♫ Dust In The Wind ♫

Given the current status of our world, our environment, the health of our planet, this song kept popping in and out of my head today.

According to SongFacts …

Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren wrote this after reading a book of Native American poetry. The line that caught his attention was “For All We Are Is Dust In The Wind.”

This got him thinking about the true value of material things and the meaning of success. The band was doing well and making money, but Kerry realized that in the end, he would eventually die just like everyone else. No matter our possessions or accomplishments, we all end up back in the ground.

Kansas was almost done writing and rehearsing the Point of Know Return album when their producer, Jeff Glixman, asked if they had any more songs. Livgren reluctantly played this song for his bandmates on acoustic guitar, insisting they wouldn’t like it because it was not Kansas. To his surprise, they loved the song and insisted they record it. Livgren then fought against his own song, but was overruled. “Dust In The Wind” became their biggest hit, but Livgren never did think very highly of it. “I tend to like the more bombastic things, like ‘The Wall,’ he told us.

The song peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 22, 1978, making it Kansas’s only top ten Billboard Hot 100 charting single.

Dust in the Wind

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind

Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Oh, ho, ho

Now, don’t hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away
And all your money won’t another minute buy
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
Everything is dust in the wind
The wind

  1. Jill, this is a great song by a great band. These guys could really play. My favorite is I think called “People of the South Wind,” but that may be part of the chorus.

One of my favorite stories is the old MTV show “Where are they now?” did a show on Kansas that never aired. Why? Because each member lived a normal life after the band broke up, so it was not newsworthy. Keith

  2. I am surmising that you are unaware of another anniversary of utmost importance that is tied to this song…although it, as of yet, has not been overlooked! May 14, 2018 was the unforgettable (for some) post “A Dust-in-the-Wind Monday” that featured this song (same video!) at the end. Berkeley the Bear and the Lego Breakfast Machine were two of the items that preceded the song. How do I remember this particular post in such detail you ask? Simple…it was on that day on that post that Benjamin became a Filosofa’s Word follower! That post is a thumbnail on the Google page, after the screensaver, that I have to pass to go anywhere else on the computer. Exactly how I did that remains a mystery to me and I have not been able to replicate the act again. It is an often revisited post by Benjamin via the thumbnail before we come to “our” mail. He was not impressed with the song, but Berkeley has never left his heart. Oddly enough, this song has been reverberating through my mind for days. I’ve always loved it! Thank-you!

    • My dearest Ellen … you surmised correctly that without your ‘early warning system’, I would have missed that anniversary altogether! Upon reading your comment, I returned to the post of nearly one year ago, and I must admit that reading your comment on that post brought the first smile I’ve had in … maybe days? The day that you and Benjamin first began following my humble blog was one of joy … at that time, I had no idea just how much joy you both would bring me! I discovered that the video of Berkeley has been taken down, but I shall endeavour to find another before that all-important anniversary, and to revive that post! Thank YOU, my friend. (P.S. I am behind on emails … having a bit of angst this week … but I will respond to yours soon. ❤ )

      • A wee correction! May 14th is solely Benjamin’s first anniversary as a devoted follower. My anniversary was non-celebrated on April 11th, as mentioned on the Earth Day – Redux of March 22nd, which incidentally was an anniversary itself. I was a silent follower beginning with the April 11th Good People post. I am fairly certain that the first comment left by me was on the March 22, 2018 Earth Day post. But, I digress. Benjamin is aware of his coming anniversary and loves to press the thumbnail with the “teensy photo of Miss Jill” to go back to his first visit, he even knows the “teensy words, A Dust-in-the-” beneath the photo. Although the Berkeley video is not available via the post, we revisit it by googling “Berkeley the bear canada” and it can still be found along with others. The Lego Breakfast Machine can still be viewed and remains beloved by this little Lego lover. One last wee thing : “Namaste Miss Jill! It’s me, Benjamin! I’m sending you lotsa kisses and a neckbuster hug, two of them! Bye!” Thank-you x 2!!

        • Correction on the date you discovered Filosofa’s Word is duly noted and I’m so sorry it was not celebrated on the proper date! However, I shall celebrate you and Benjamin both becoming friends on the 14th of May! And for Benjamin …

Hi Benjamin! Namaste! 🙏 Thank you so much for the neckbuster hugs and the bunches of kisses … I really needed them today! And here are some back for you … 🤗🤗🤗 😘😘😘 I love you!
