Will there ever come a day that I don’t have an excess of angst just bubbling over, demanding to put fingers to the keyboard and words to the page? I have my doubts.
On Sunday morning, Trump posted the following tweet that was liked by 52 thousand mindless people:
“A poll should be done on which is the more dishonest and deceitful newspaper, the Failing New York Times or the Amazon (lobbyist) Washington Post! They are both a disgrace to our Country, the Enemy of the People, but I just can’t seem to figure out which is worse? The good news is that at the end of 6 years, after America has been made GREAT again and I leave the beautiful White House (do you think the people would demand that I stay longer? KEEP AMERICA GREAT), both of these horrible papers will quickly go out of business & be forever gone!”
There are multiple problems with these brief 103 words.
The first, of course, is that the New York Times is not failing, nor is The Washington Post, and that neither are necessarily dishonest, though they occasionally get it wrong. Both have made mistakes, and to their credit, they have printed apologies and retractions when necessary. Neither are “the enemy of the people”, and in fact they are #2 and #3 on my daily source list, preceded only by The Guardian.
The second problem with Trump’s tweet is that Trump is doing nothing that even has the remotest chance of making the United States ‘great’, and it is highly speculative that he will have another six years, at least, if we have such a thing as a fair and honest election in 2020.
And lastly, though perhaps most importantly, is his innuendo that perhaps “people would demand [he] stay longer”. No. Effing. Way. The United States Constitution which, albeit singed around the edges, remains in place today, is clear on just how long a president may serve, and it is not one single day over eight years. Trump will be an exception ONLY IF he is, at the end of his term, a dictator rather than a president. If that happens, I blame every single person who ever voted for him, who ever attended one of his rallies and chanted “lock her up”, or who ever wore a maga hat.

Arthur Laffer
On Wednesday, Trump will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a man named Arthur Laffer. Who, you might ask, is Arthur Laffer? Laffer is best known for the Laffer curve, an illustration of the concept that there exists some tax rate between 0% and 100% that will result in maximum tax revenue for government. More to the point, Laffer was an economic advisor to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. This, more than anything, is why he is receiving the Medal of Freedom. Like Miriam Adelson, who received the medal last year for no reason other than her and her husband’s magnanimous donations to Trump’s election campaign in 2016. The medal no longer has any meaning for it is now being given as a reward to those who lick Trump’s boots.
Last week ABC News aired an interview on This Week between Donald Trump an ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. There is quite a bit that was of interest in the interview, and the part where he said he would accept information from a foreign entity about his political opponent if it were offered has already been discussed at some length in the news and other blogs. But, I want to share with you a bit of the dialogue they had concerning Robert Mueller’s report. Remember, folks, don’t expect truth from the mouth of da trumpeter …
STEPHANOPOULOS: What’s your pitch to the swing voter on the fence?
TRUMP: Safety, security, great economy. I think I’ve done more than any other first-term president ever. I have a phony witch hunt, which is just a phony pile of stuff. Mueller comes out. There’s no collusion. And essentially a ruling that no obstruction. And they keep going with it. You know what? People are angry about it.
STEPHANOPOULOS: I don’t think that’s why he found — but we don’t have time for that now. We’ll talk about later.
TRUMP: That is what they found. Excuse me. He found no collusion. And they didn’t find anything having to do with obstruction because they made a ruling based on his findings and they said no obstruction.
STEPHANOPOULOS: They didn’t examine collusion. He laid out evidence of obstruction.
TRUMP: Oh, are you trying to say now that there was collusion even though he said there was no collusion?
STEPHANOPOULOS: He didn’t say there’s no collusion.
TRUMP: He said no collusion.
STEPHANOPOULOS: He said he didn’t look at collusion.
TRUMP: George, the report said no collusion.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Did you read the report?
TRUMP: Uh, yes I did, and you should read it, too.
STEPHANOPOULOS: I read every word.
TRUMP: All right, let’s go. You should read it, too, George.
It’s reminiscent of an Abbott and Costello clip, don’t you think? A more stupid man has never sat in the Oval Office. And then the conversation turned to former White House Counsel Don McGahn, who testified under oath to Robert Mueller’s team that Trump had asked him to fire Mueller, and then later that he had asked him to deny that he had ever asked him.
TRUMP: I don’t care what he says. It doesn’t matter. That was to show everyone what a good counsel he was. Now, he may have gotten confused with the fact that I’ve always said, and I’ve said it to you, and I’ve said to anybody that would listen, Robert Mueller was conflicted.
STEPHANOPOULOS: But why would Don McGahn lie — … Why would he lie under oath? Why would he lie under oath to Robert Mueller?
TRUMP: Because he wanted to make himself look like a good lawyer. Or — or he believed it because I would constantly tell anybody that would listen, including you, including the media, that Robert Mueller was conflicted. Robert Mueller had a total conflict of interest.
After the interview, he tweeted …
“Think I will do many more Network Interviews, as I did in 2016, in order to get the word out that no President has done what I have in … the first 2 1/2 years of his Presidency, including the fact that we have one of the best Economies in the history of our Country. It is called Earned Media. In any event, enjoy the show!”
I think it is a threat to torture us! And by the way … Trump’s approval rating based on an aggregate of polls rose from 41.2% to 42.5% just last week … an increase of 1.3%. Can anybody ‘splain to me what the heck he did last week to make more people like him???
Last but not least, I promised a picture of my latest bumper sticker …

And now, I return you to your own life, and I am going to knead some onion bread for tonight’s supper.

Hello Jill. You did notice that reality, what is true for tRump, is what ever he wishes it to be. Nothing can shake that. No one can change that view that what he wants to be true, is true. Why? Because from the time he was the wealthy over spoiled brat of a wealthy egotist, he has been told since he was a baby he was the best, the greatest, and deserved everything the world could offer. As a child no one but his parents ( well his dad ) could tell him no. No staff, no teacher, no police, no authority had any authority over him. So he grew into teenager hood thinking he was the authority. After assaulting his teacher his dad bought him a space in a military academy where they humored him and passed him on up the grade levels. He did not earn it, his dad paid for it. Same with college. After that his dad’s money and connections made it so again he was the authority and never wrong, able to lie about anything with no consequence, and get bailed out both legally and illegally by his dad. He could play the big man business hero in his mind with again no consequence. So all his life he has been conditioned to believe what he wishes, and do what he wants, and to deny anyone else is right. He really is convinced the facts are what he wants them to be. When Ron worked for him, no one could tell him he was wrong. No one could contradict him. They would be gone right then. Plus he did not see the staff as real people. They mattered only so long as they could gain him something, do something for him. Ron worked for him over 6 years as his butler and he never bothered to learn Ron’s name. He has no emotional control. Once when a door knob came off in his hand he flew into a rage and threw it at Ron’s head. Ron seen it coming and it missed him, but that was the way tRump dealt with things. If not for his families wealth he would be institutionalized or homeless. Hugs

Hello sklawlor. Thank you for bring this to my attention. I agree with it. One thing that no one seems to mention is we have no justification for attacking Iran in any way. No US security has been attacked or harmed. The ships were not ours, they were Japanese. We broke the treaty , not them. If we send missiles or drop bombs on Iran we are doing the same as when Russia invaded Crimea and Georgia. We will be a hostile nation attacking another nation for our own personal gain. We will become a pariah nation, just as Russia was or is. My fear is we are seeing the start of a new axis of evil of nations with the US as a leading part. While our people are conflicted on the outcome they want, there is no denying we have a huge military. Other nations can lead our president around by the nose and get us to do things against our own interests, at least the dictators he admires can. Seems to me history is repeating itself and we are on the wrong side this time. Hugs

Yes, he is a narcissist, with an ego the size of Kansas, but I think there’s more to it than just being a spoiled brat born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I genuinely thing there is something wired wrong in his brain, for he has no empathy even for his own children or wives. He needs to be institutionalized, though I would settle gleefully for his death. Sigh. Hugs!

Hello Jill. I agree. He shows signs of decreased mental ability, no emotional control, no empathy, no sense of reality, and no sense of perception of his own actions to others. He is delusional. He may have ate too many lead paint chips as a child, but it is clear he is mentally handicapped and mentally ill. Hugs

Heh heh … I like your idea about the lead paint chips! I personally think he is just one of those people who was born without the ability to care about others. Some people seem to lack something in their brain or their chemical composition that simply does not allow them to have empathy or compassion. Perhaps it is hereditary, for his children seem to be much the same.

At least you folks, from all over, sound like you had a leader you liked at some point lately. I cannot think of one in my seventy years of life in Canada. We thought Justin might break that string, but he proved no better than his predecessors. Not sure about the U.K., but I don’t think they are doing any better than us. Politicians are politicians first, statesmen 2nd, if at all. Government: One of the three worst inventions of humanity. And still getting worse all the time…

I might have argued with the statement that “politicians are politicians first, statesmen 2nd, if at all” a few years ago, but today, I must admit that your statement is true some 99% of the time. I think there are exceptions, but they are few and far between. We are, it would seem, all heading toward some culmination of all the corruption, and it can only end badly, I think.

Funny that half the country thinks Trump is the enemy of the ppl, and yet he’s so delusional as to blame everyone and everything else for his mistakes. I wonder, has this narcissist ever admitted being wrong even once? A person who cannot recognize his own faults is hopeless and cannot/ will not strive for self improvement.
I’m as perplexed as you, how can his supporters not see his limitations and shortcomings? He’s the antithesis of a good leader, but a great bullsh*tter for sure.

Hello 1EarthUnited. Please see the comment I left. The answer is he is never wrong. In his mind he can’t be. When he makes over the top claims for himself he believes them. He is this way because he was raised and trained that way and never had reality hit him upside the head. He really believes he is above most people, he is the cream of the crop. One of his greatest bitches is he thinks he should be in with the top wealthiest of society, the top socialites. They want nothing to do with him and find him as we do, an uncouth lout. That is one reason he has tried to form so many high end clubs, to get those people to pay attention to him and get them to admit him to their circles. They play him off. They can’t now, he has gained a rank they can’t ignore. Hugs

Yes, he is a product of his environment. Being brought up in NYC, he mastered art of hustle, and so he duped millions and hustled his way into the white house. Slick Willie did the same thing, but was much more refined. Oddly Trump really does appeal to the redneck element of society.

Well, there are 2 newspapers I don’t think sell fake news and are going under.I think they should fight back against those newspapers and magazines that do fool the readers.
Trump has proved how thick he is, George has proved how tenacious he is (no more interviews for him). Trump has proved how easy it is to devalue and tarnish a treasured medal by giving it out in lucky bags.
You have proved how brave you are, II understand completely how you feel, but you may make your car a target. I hope not.

No, neither one of them are in any danger of going under. They are struggling, as all print newspapers are in this day of electronic media, but they’re holding their own, and together are the two oldest and most-trusted in the U.S. Trump knows it too, and he also knows they aren’t “fake news”, but he has to convince his base they are, else … gasp … they might actually get accurate information and turn against Trumpie.
I enjoyed watching George give Trump just enough rope to prove, if there was ever any doubt, what a fool he is.
I don’t think I’ll be a target, for as you know, I never go out much, especially in the van.

Jill, many thoughts are kicking around my head after reading this.
My vote is the US president is the biggest purveyor of fake news and it not even close. Both the Times and Post are highly credible and, just today, I read Trump has a global credibility problem, so people are not accepting his word on Iran,
Finally, reading the interview, an unhighlighted problem of Trump is he does not have the patience to be a good listener. That is one reason logical arguments don’t get in.

Jill, yet one more thing. I saw on the news that Trump told George Stephanopolous in his interview that he will be announcing a “phenomenal” healthcare plan in two montgs or so. Two things. In 2016, he said he had a “phenomenal” healthcare with better benefits and cheaper cost. If there were such a plan, he maybe should have shared it with his GOP colleagues as they developed some awful ideas in Congress. Of course, there was no such plan, as it was all marketing schtick.
McConnell said he is eager to hear the president’s ideas, but there is a problem. White House staff said today there is no such plan.
When will people learn that just because he says something does not mean it is true. In fact, do not believe a word he says. The odds are in your favor. Keith

I don’t think that people who allow themselves to be spoon-fed lies by Fox ‘News’ will ever learn that nothing he says is true. The rest of us already know not to believe a word he says. If he said something was an orange, I would presume it to be a banana. Sigh.

You are so right. I think it is proper to question Trump’s and Pompeo’s word that Iran hit those tankers, for there are too many who are saying the opposite. Remember when Bush went to war with Iraq because he had false information saying that they had WMDs? This is reminiscent of that, but in this case, I sense there is some collaboration between Saudi Arabia, and possibly Israel to paint a false picture, probably with help from Pompeo. It is a dangerous situation, for even our allies do not trust us, and rightly so.
Yes, I actually watched the clip of that portion of the interview, and Trump repeatedly interrupted Stephanopoulos. George was actually laughing about it, for I think he knew that Trump was making himself look like the fool he is.

Even if Trumpelstiltskin could prove those tankers were hit with Iranian missiles, I would want to know how the Americans stole them and which submarine they were fired from. You can bet they weren’t fired by Iran, there is nothing for them to gain from it. Meanwhile, Trumpo gets to start his nuclear war in the Middle East. Iran cannot help but lose.
Who is telling the truth? Certainly not American sources.

Weirdly, Conspiracy theorist, David Icke, did predict, years ago now, that Trump would provoke a war with Iran (and North Korea). He also predicted that these conflicts would be a falsehood, perpetrated by America.
Certainly, I hope Britain does not become entangled in this… We had enough with Iraq and Syria (not to mention Afghanistan). Our armed forces are too cut back for Trump’s big plans. Where in the heck has diplomacy gone in the world. The Trump administration is shredding every common decency for civilisation. I am beginning to think that Trump may just be one of the Lizard people (an ancient alien bloodline proposed by David Icke as the reason we cannot have peace or good living on the earth… Because these parasitic blood line people feed off the rest of us). While that sounds like just too much ridiculous conspiracy theory, can anyone suggest a better reason?

Frankly, though it is detrimental to my own well-being, I hope that none of our allies rush to help us if Trump is so foolish as to provoke a was with Iran. You ask where diplomacy is … there is no room for diplomacy in a world where the leaders’ have such huge egos and listen to nobody. The Lizard People theory works for me, for no, I have no better explanation. Sigh.

Yet, so weirdly, there are people who believe Trump’s policies are making America great again. Some say, “I don’t like Trump, but I like his policies.” Which policies? Well, they often cite economic, because look how great the Trump economy is doing. Military build-up is cheered because we’re re-establishing our military power after years of neglect (in their minds). And the wall…they love the wall to stop all those immigrants from entering America and destroying our country. They like how he stands up to BAU and is snarking off Pelosi and the lyin’ Dems, and they like how he isn’t Killary, who’s gotten away with more crimes than anyone in history (in their minds).
Their minds – these Trump supporters’ minds – seem like a bizarre and dangerous place to be. They probably will ask/request/demand, and cheer for Trump to be allowed to stay in the office no matter the vote or how many terms or years have passed, because that’s how they believe America works. Their relationship with reality seems disturbingly fragile, not surprising when they narrow their information to Trump and Fox. GIGO – garbage in, garbage out.

the most dangerous thing lately is the issues with Iran and the oil tankers they are supposed to have struck. I don’t believe a single word of that nonsense, even if it is from the intelligence people because they want a war to prop up the military industrial complex.
remember the WMD’s lie or the gulf of Tonga falsehood? Both resulted in much innocent life being lost and for what?
I have said forever that we just need to stay the hell out of the middle east and we don’t need to sanction these countries which results in dead civilians just as an actual war does.
It’s time we stop being the bully on the playground and leave other people the hell alone.
That’s not a popular view, it doesn’t create jobs for people who manufacture machines and ammunition for the military and on the surface, to the mindless people who heed the drumbeat of America first, it certainly isn’t patriotic.
I have had it with presidents and politicians intervening in every country and trying to fix them while our own is falling apart because those same political puppets don’t give a damn about the average US citizen.

I fully agree that there is more to the oil tanker situation than meets the eye, and while I don’t wish to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I can easily believe that Trump, Saudi Arabia, and possibly Israel had a hand in hitting those oil tankers, then doctoring a film to make it appear that Iran was involved. If we go to war with Iran based solely on what we are being told now, it will be highly reminiscent of George W. Bush going to war with Iraq over the false information he received that Saddam had WMDs. Pompeo and Bolton have been wanting to bomb Iran for decades, and Trump has been dying to play with his nuclear button since he took office. This is a dreadful combination and will lead to massive loss of life, if not World War III.
The situation in the Middle East is complex … always has been … and it is extremely dangerous for those who do not understand it to become involved. Trump doesn’t even understand our 8,000-word Constitution, so no way he understands the tenuous situation in the Middle East. He is a puppet for bin Salman and Netanyahu, I fear. I would like to say that cooler heads may prevail, but remember that we do not currently have a Secretary of Defense, nor of Homeland Security. We currently have no ambassador to the United Nations. We are currently not trusted at all by our European allies. We are not in a good position, and with a madman at the helm?

Hello Jill. The situation in the middle East has gotten a lot worse since we basically turned our back on the Palestinians and gave Israel carte blanche to do what they wished with the entire area. First moving the embassy, then cutting off aid to the Palestinians, and then the Jared Kushner’s plan to get other countries to pay for a stipend to the Palestinians to stay as serfs and third class people within borders where they have no rights, can not work or provide for themselves and can not own anything not given to them by a government they have no say in. Basically a slave class supported by other Arab countries so Israel doesn’t even have to pay their share for it. Hugs

You make excellent points, Michael. “In their minds” … the problem with what is in their minds is that they aren’t thinking for themselves, but rather rely on the steady diet of lies that they are fed by the likes of Fox and Breitbart, for they are told that they cannot believe the mainstream media. Their minds are waste repositories, rather than functional thinking machines. And you may be right that, even if he is re-elected next year (Please NO!) they may wish for him to stay on past 2024, but let us hope that Congress and the Courts will enforce the Constitution which strictly prohibits it. Frankly, I don’t think this nation could withstand another nearly six years of him in office.

“no President has done what I have” That’s true, in a twisted sort of way.
What other president openly and publicly asked a hostile foreign country for campaign help and then denied and obfuscated when called out on it? What other president called for the other party’s nominee to be locked up as part of his campaign?
What other president has handed out medals like Hallowe’en treats in exchange for supporting him in his grift, providing cover for really bad tax policy, or even agreeing to pretend that trump beat him at golf?
What other president repeatedly tells his staff what to do using the “Devil’s Advocate” method, as described by Cohen? ( in the movie: Al Pacino never actually tells his clients to shred their files, for example – he suggests. Cohen testified that this is how Trump has always given orders in order to support plausible deniability when – if – an action ends up in court.)
What other president has lied so much that journalists get a more accurate story if they just report the opposite of whatever he says is the truth? What other president has been so resistant to reading even as he has lied about that so consistently?
What other president has suggested rewarding news media for writing what he thinks is a puff piece about him?
AS for the polls – I just read that trump has just fired a polling company for returning a poll showing numbers he did not like. He seems to think that that purpose of polling is to make him feel good or give him happy numbers to publicize. This might skew polls in his favor as more polling outlets skew results to make him happy or decide to not publish results that he won’t like. What other president did that? Surely, no other president has done what he has done.
