♫ Cupid ♫

I sit here, cold and tired, ready for bed, but not quite finished for the night, when I glance over at Ms. Goose’s desk, and I swear the stuffed hedgehog she keeps on her desk winked at me!  Winked, I tell ya!  ‘Tis definitely time for bed when the stuffed critters start winking, but first … there’s Sam Cooke!

Who doesn’t love the voice of Sam Cooke?  Sam Cooke wrote this song, but the original intent wasn’t for him to sing it.  Cooke’s producers had asked him to write a song for a girl they had seen on a Perry Como TV show — but once they heard her sing, they kept “Cupid” for Cooke himself.  She must’ve really botched it!

It was Cooke’s idea to drop in the sound of an arrow being fired “straight to my lover’s heart.”

Since I’m too tired tonight for ‘further ado’, let’s just listen …

Cupid
Sam Cooke

Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, for me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, I don’t mean to bother you
But I’m in distress
There’s danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn’t know I exist
And this you can fix

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, Cupid, if your arrow make her love strong for me
I promise I wll love her until eternity
I know between the two of us her heart we can steal
Help me if you will

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover’s heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover’s heart for me

Now, Cupid
Don’t you hear me
Calling you?
I need you
Cupid
Help me
I need you
Cupid
Don’t fail

  1. Jill, Sam Cooke could sing the phone book and make it sound good. The accents on certain syllables make this song soar. It brings back memories of beach trips as it was part of the Beach Music played in the Carolinas. Keith

      • Thanks, Jill. I’m okay. They’re planning redevelopment for our Society. They’re going to tear down our building, move us for about 2 1/2 years to another building, and then move us back to a new and improved Society building on this same spot. It will have a lift (elevator) so it will be much better for those of us who are seniors. It will have added floors the builders can sell to make a profit. I just hate moving twice more. There probably won’t be built-in closets or kitchen cabinets in the rebuilt flat so I may have to pay to have those added. We expect them to be there in the new U.S. flats but not in India. The word “furnished” doesn’t cover them here. Until I’m settled in the temporary flat I may not be blogging for a while. I don’t know if there will be Wifi already there. You take care. 🙂 — Suzanne

        • Oh, I do NOT envy you!!! I hate moving, which is why we’ve lived in this place that is far over-priced and under-maintained for more than 20 years now! I’m astonished by the thought of an apartment with no kitchen cabinets or closets! I have much to learn, I think. I hope you’ll have plenty of help moving, and that it isn’t too traumatic & stressful. Take care and stay in touch when you can! Hugs!

  2. Wow. I was a whole dozen years old, and I already had a girl I wanted Cupid to send his arrow to. But she was already in love with someone else…
Ah, the vagaries of young love… Joan Fontaine, are you still out there?
