♫ If Ever I’m In Your Arms Again ♫

A few nights ago, I played Tonight I Celebrate My Love by Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson, which led me to remember (with a little help from a friend) a few other songs from Peabo Bryson that I love.

One such song, If Ever I’m In Your Arms Again, has stuck in my head much of the day today, and despite trying to cough it out, sneeze it out, and smacking myself upside the head a couple of times, it seems to have taken up residence and made itself at home up there.  So, of course you know what that means … from my head to yours!

Released in 1984 as a single from his album Straight from the Heart, the single peaked at #6 on the R&B chart and was Bryson’s first Top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where it peaked at #10 during the summer of 1984.  Other than that, though, I find no trivia about the song, and one of my best usual sources, SongFacts, doesn’t even know who Peabo Bryson is!  So, you’ll have to settle for just listening to the music tonight.

If Ever You’re in My Arms Again
Peabo Bryson

It all came so easy
All the lovin’ you gave me
The feelings we shared
And I still can remember
How your touch was so tender
It told me you cared

We had a once in a lifetime
But I just couldn’t see
Until’ it was gone
A second once in a lifetime
May be too much to ask
But I swear from now on

If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll love you much better
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll hold you forever
This time we’ll never end

Now I’m seen clearly
How I still need you near me
I still love you so
There’s something between us
That won’t ever leave us
There’s no letting go
(No letting go)

We had a once in a lifetime
But I just didn’t know it
‘Til my life fell apart
A second once in a lifetime
Isn’t too much to ask
‘Cause I swear from the heart

If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll love you much better
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll hold you forever
This time we’ll never end, never end

The best of romances
Deserve second chances
I’ll get to you somehow
‘Cause I promise now

If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll love you much better
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll hold you forever
This time we’ll never end

If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll love you much better
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll hold you forever
This time we’ll never end
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll love you much better
If ever you’re in my arms again
This time I’ll hold you forever
This time we’ll never end
If ever you’re in my arms again

  1. SongFacts needs a new fact finder!! So many years later and this song still has the power to bring me to tears. I would venture to say that the majority of people, either male or female, upon hearing these words had some moments of regret for a love that was lost through something that they had brought about or had done to them by the other party. Not so for myself. At the time that this was released I was already well into the unraveling of my life as I knew it by the one who eventually went to find himself. But, that is not why this song affected me so deeply. It was for a life and a love that was senselessly lost through an equally senseless war. For many this song spoke of the possibility, the “if ever”. For me it spoke of the impossibility, only the dream of “if ever”. Tears and all, I still love this song! Thank-YOU!

    • I KNOW!!! I wasn’t necessarily surprised when I entered the song title and it came up blank, but when I entered “Peabo Bryson” and it still came up blank, my jaw dropped! Oddly, I really never listened closely to the lyrics, but always just liked the tune, but I can see why it would be so personal for you. And I’m sorry if my selection brought tears … so here’s a hug to make up for it … 🤗

  2. I hope I don’t put a bad light on this song for you, but it is amazing how much a guy can promise a woman after he realizes what he had, but lost. Few guys can keep those promises. But I admit, it sounds really good.

    • Nah, you can’t wreck a song for me … you know how I am …. half the time I don’t know the lyrics anyway, and I either like or dislike a song for the music itself. And, while I agree with you about a guy promising the moon and stars on a silver platter but not following through, the same is true of women. Neither gender has a monopoly on broken promises.
