Jolly (Almost) Monday

Good morning, friends, and welcome to …

Jolly and I are both in somewhat of a grey mood today, but we agreed that it’s important to help our friends start the week off with a smile.  So, we hope you’ll forgive us if this week’s Jolly Monday falls a bit short, but we hope that you’ll find something to laugh about anyway!  We didn’t do much baking this weekend but have found a few odds ‘n ends to go with your coffee & tea, so grab a bite and a cuppa, and let’s see what’s fun in the world today!

Send in the clown …

His name is Joshua Jack, and until recently he was employed by a New Zealand ad agency, FCB.  One day a week or so ago, he received an email from his bosses telling him a meeting was being held to discuss his future at the company and he could bring a friend or family member as a support person.  That sounds rather ominous, don’t you think?

Jack decided that since it was pretty obvious he was about to get the axe, he would indeed take along a support person, but not a friend or a family member.  Instead, Jack felt a bit of humour was in order, and he took along … a clown!clown-meetingThat’s right … even knowing that his income was about to come to a screeching halt, Jack hired a clown for the equivalent of $127 USD to accompany him to his meeting.  It is said that the clown spent the time blowing up balloons and folding them into a series of animals throughout the meeting, and even mimed crying when the termination paperwork was handed over to Mr. Jack.  No worries, though, for within a week, Mr. Jack had found a position with another ad agency and is scheduled to start this week!  Gotta love a guy with a sense of humour!

Love on fire!

I didn’t know people still wrote love letters … like, on paper and with a pen … I thought love letters today were all electronic, but then what do I know?  When was the last time I got a love letter?  Um … let’s see … perhaps if I were more loveable?  But, a woman in Nebraska seems to have accumulated quite a few paper love letters from her man-of-the-moment, and then … he was no longer the man of her dreams.  Naturally, she did what any of us would do … she burned his love letters!

letter-burningThere must have been a few hundred at least, to have caused the fire that caused $4,000 worth of damage to her apartment!  Yep, the fire department had to be called, and she was charged with ‘negligent burning’.  Now, it is my opinion that the writer of those letters should share the cost, for obviously he did something to make her want to burn the letters, right?

It started as a joke …

Carson King, 24, said he thought it would be a funny joke to attend the College GameDay broadcast at Iowa State University and hold a sign saying his “Busch Light needs replenished” and including his account information for money transferring app Venmo. beer-sign

“I just thought as a joke, maybe I could make a sign asking for money to get some Busch Light.  You know, buy some lattes. My mom was like ‘this is going to be a proud mom moment. My son is going to be begging for money for beer on national television.'”

But what Carson didn’t expect was that people would actually send money … lots of money, as it happens!

“I looked down at my phone. My friend kept asking ‘Hey man, who keeps texting you?’ and I looked down and I had about $400 on my Venmo account.”

Soon it grew to $600 … $800 … and by the end of Tuesday, it had reached $20,000!!!  Yes, you heard me right … Twenty. Thousand. Dollars.  But wait!  At last count, viewers had sent Carson a total of $100,000 and counting!  It just goes to prove what I’ve been saying for years now … people got no sense!!!

But, there’s a really great upside to this story.  Carson King is a good guy, and he decided to keep only enough to buy a single case of beer and is donating the rest to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.  And … better still … both Venmo (a PayPal mobile payment service) and Busch Beer will be matching Carson’s contribution!  So, what started as a joke, has ended as a wonderful moment of generosity.

An emotional parting …

Who would have thought it would be so hard to say … good bye  😢 … to a utility pole???  In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city’s power company is updating its technology, and the ancient, staple-riddled post on the corner of 3rd and Federal is due to be replaced with a newer wooden pole in order to support the new infrastructure by the end of the month.  The pole had something to say first, though

“I just wanted to say it’s been my pleasure to be your corner telephone pole for many years now. It looks like I’ll soon be replaced. Probably by the young pole there on the ground,” said the note. “The neighborhood has changed over the years but I’ve always been here—holding street signs, electric wires, telephone wires, cable, a light, and lately this transformer.

The many staples are a reminder of the garage sales, flea markets, and hundreds of lost pets,” it continued. “Sox, Cinnamon, Poncho and the rest, I hope you made it home. I hope I do too.

It’s been fun! Maybe a few months from now you’ll say to yourself ‘I remember the old pole.’ Thanks, The Corner Pole.”

If that doesn’t just bring a tear to your eye …

Here are just a few funny pics I stumbled across yesterday …

Very credible note from teacher, don’t you think?

Oopsie!  I think the cake decorator goofed!

And a few cartoons …

And last but not least, today’s funny animal video features squirrels!  I tell you, folks, the cats in this video are much kinder than our own Feral Five, for except for Miss Izzy, all of ours would torment the poor squirrels to death!

jollyAnd that’s it for today, folks, for we all have work to do, yes?  I must go back into the rabbit hole and see what the latest atrocities are in our world, and you must go make some money!!!  Have a great week, my friends, and remember to share those lovely smiles you’re wearing … everybody could use an extra these days!  Love ‘n hugs from Filosofa and Jolly!

  1. Hello Jill. Oh my goodness what a grand bit of jolly. As to cats and a squirrel wile my Odie might run and hid, Milo would be like yours, he would be all over it like it was made of catnip. I love the last cat built, I have had a few cars like that. Be well. Hugs

    • I’m so glad you found some things to start your week with a smile! Our Izzy would be under the sofa for days if a squirrel got in here, as would Ollie and Boo, but Tiger and maybe Pandi would be … well, let’s just say that squirrel wouldn’t stand a chance. Boo’s thing is crickets. Most every morning we get up to a dead cricket in the hallway or bathroom, with all it’s legs pulled off and scattered about. Torturers, they are! Hugs!

  2. Namaste, Miss Jill! Surprise, it’s me, Benjamin! I went to the little kids dentist today. Then I came to Gem’s to visit cause we both miss us together. We are having a Gem Sleepover this week. Not today cause school tomorrow and some more tomorrows after that. Guess what? I drink milk, juiceboxes are to take to school. I can eat the yummy sprinkled donut and then brush my teeth cause sugar hurts teeth if you don’t brush right away. That is important, the dentist said that! I have something to tell you ’bout that stuff for Gem’s coffee. We get little things almost like that when we eat at Denny’s and sometimes other places. Not pretend half & half. Gem doesn’t like that stuff. It has to be real half & half. Don’t feel bad, it was a mistake, right? Okie dokie artichokie! Mommy says that. I love the Squirrels video, they are so cute. You get Two Thumbs up, 10 Gold Stars, a neckbuster hug and lotsa kisses! Jolly too! Bye and thank you.

    • Namaste, Benjamin! What a wonderful surprise to see you today! Gem already told me about the Gem sleepover this weekend, and I bet you are excited, aren’t you? I know that Gem is excited, for she misses you very much! Ahhh … so do you want milk with your Jolly Monday donut from now on? Milk is healthy for you, but so is juice. Jolly and I are really sorry about messing up Gem’s half-and-half. But, we will make it up to her next Monday, just wait and see! “Okey Dokey Artichokie” … I LOVE that! It’s funny! I knew you would like the squirrels video, ’cause I know how much you love squirrels! Thanks so much for the neckbuster hug! I needed that today! Jolly and I love you, my young friend! ❤

  3. It appears that without Benjamin’s presence there is no one to remind Jolly to offer the half & half…light, but not white is my preference…sigh!! Just as a friendly forewarning, Benjamin will be here for a few hours tomorrow and will surely notice Gem’s missing necessity. The Squirrel videos will definitely be a hit with him, mayhaps your saving grace! Be that as it may, I must commend Jolly and yourself for rising to the challenge of promoting smiles as they are in jeopardy, minus your efforts, of falling from many faces. Thank-you!

    • Whatever are you talking about? Why, there’s a whole box of coffee creamers for you! Jolly reminded me to get them last time we went to the grocery, “just for Gem”, he said. 😉 I am thrilled knowing that Benjamin will be there tomorrow and will get to see Jolly after all! I rather thought he would enjoy the squirrel video, and I must admit I watched it twice, as it made me smile!

      • Jill, Jill, Jill…Coffee-Mate, seriously??!! This is a pathetic mixture of hydrogenated vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup, sodium caseinate and other equally nefarious ingredients that masquerades as a non-dairy coffee whitener. In addition to that unhealthy and undesirable list of dietary miscreants…it tastes horrid! It is also an insult to Dairy Cows everywhere and the fruits of their bodies…milk and cream! ONLY pure and simple Half & Half with no added flavors, no sugar and no mysterious hidden things can be added to my cup of coffee. I admit to a newfound preference for Shamrock Farms Half & Half, but not wishing to appear unreasonable will partake of any brand name or even (in a pinch) a store brand. I’ll go out on a limb here, with saw in hand, and add that I prefer light to medium roast flavored coffee, fresh brewed of course, as opposed to the stronger dark roast unflavored variety. Please tell Jolly that whilst I appreciate his gallant effort on my behalf…PLEASE, cross Coffee-mate off of the shopping list and put this atrocious concoction in the trash can where it belongs! Thank-You, and Jolly!!

  4. What a great lift to Monday… Love Joshua’s clown… How humiliating for the officials firing him! That, and the ‘nuts’ in the Whitehouse… 😂😂😂

I have a bit of catching up to do… Missed a few of your posts… Hope you haven’t chewed your own arm off yet… I know the world is not an easy place to report on events right now. 😒😉

    • Yeah, I think the ‘nuts’ in the White House was my favourite! I aim to keep politics out of Jolly Monday, but that one was just too good to pass up, so I sort of snuck it in.

I was just thinking last night that I hadn’t seen you around for a few days and hoped that all was well. No, haven’t chewed my arm off yet, but … the events of the past week and the potential ramifications have me in rather a dark mood, for sure. Finding it hard to summons a smile these days. Sigh.

  5. Jill, where is Judy Collins singing “Send in the clowns?” This was one of the stories on the NPR show “Wait, wait, don’t tell me” this weekend.

The woman looks very good to be 1,001 years old!! Keith

    • Y’know … I actually considered putting a clip of that song with the story, but decided against it. And yes, that woman is indeed well preserved for her age! Bet she’s seen a lot in over 1,000 years! Have a good week, my friend!

    • 🤣🤣 I think most every kid would try it at least once! I remember forging my dad’s signature a few times … It was easy, for he wrote with such a scrawl, just like a doctor, that nobody could read it anyway, but eventually I got caught!

  6. Great job Jill! These all made me smile! I am thinking now of what sign I can make and go hold up somewhere! LOL! I love that he is donating the money!
I would have loved to see the boss’s reaction when the employee came in with the clown! That guy will win at life with an attitude like that!
Thanks for spreading cheer my dear, now you keep smiling too, even when you go in the rabbit hole!

  7. Good selection Jill
Great squirrel video; I can imagine the conversation at 2:05

Cat: ‘Hey little guy. You know I’m in charge around here?’
    Squirrel: ‘(munch) Yeh (Munch)…..(Munch)…Whatever..(munch)’
Cat (To ‘owner’ off-screen): ‘These kids today!’
    Squirrel: ‘Munch…munch…munch’

    P. Brynes’ cartoon of the Godzillas…Classic!

Carson King obviously struck a chord with the Frat Network….’I mean like beer dude! The guy needs beer! Hey man have I been there!…Send the guy money, like now!’….Nice to see that Mr King is that rare person someone with a sense of humour who is also a gentleman.

Poor Girl and the letters. If only she had paused for thought….shredded them into tiny bits then gave them away as lining for rodent cages, safe in the knowledge they would be crapped on every day.

  8. Hi Jill. Cute stories. Cute cartoons. I ate all Larry’s bacon! Cute signs too. And thank you for the tea, but I think it is time for a fresh teabag, don’t you?
Off to the city in the morning to get my pacemaker checked out. Gail will let you know if it stopped working. Of course, might be the cholesrerol in the bacon that killed me. I’ll never be sure.
