In search of something cheerful tonight, having just finished yet another post about a school shooting … I decided to go all the way back to the 60s when most music was cheerful, when life seemed less weighted down, more hopeful. And, guess who I ran into on my search? Yep … Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons!
Four Seasons producer Bob Crewe wrote this song with Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, who were frequent collaborators with the group. According to Randell …
“That was the first record that had a certain sound about it. We put some R&B there, we came in with a really interesting horn section that wasn’t one of the big things in their repertoire at that time. We really put it into a pop R&B bag with the horns and different kinds of background vocals.”
In 1966, this was reworded as a jingle for a Beech-Nut Spearmint Gum TV commercial. The Four Seasons sang on the ad, and Frankie Valli was the narrator, explaining how the flavor of the gum hangs on. It was an early use of a hit song being transformed for a commercial.
A personal aside: You all know I have been hard of hearing all my life, and I often misunderstand song lyrics. Well, the line that goes “Got a lotta love between us”? I always thought it was “Gotta lot of lucky peanuts”. Sigh.
Let’s Hang On
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons
There ain’t no good in our goodbyein’
True love takes a lot of tryin’
Ohh, I’m cryin’
Let’s hang on
To what we’ve got
Don’t let go girl
We got a lot
Got a lotta love between us
Hang on
Hang on
Hang on
To what we’ve got
You say you’re gonNa go call it quits
Gonna chuck it all and break
our love to bits
Break it up
(I wish you’d never said it
Break it up
Oh, no we’ll both regret it)
That little chip of diamond on your hand
Ain’t a fortune baby byt you know it stands
For the love
(A love to tie and bind ya)
Such a love
(We just can’t leave behind us)
Baby
Don’t you know
Baby
Don’t you go
Think it over and stay
Let’s hang on
To what we’ve got
Don’t let go girl
We got a lot
Got a lotta love between us
Hang on
Hang on
Hang on
To what we’ve got
There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do
I’d pay any price to get in good with you
Patch it up
(Give me a second turnin’)
Patch it up
(Don’t cool off while I’m burnin’)
You’ve got me cryin’ dyin’ at your door
Don’t shut me out,
ooh let me in once more
Open up
(Your arms I need to hold you)
Open up
(Your heart, oh girl I love you)
Baby
Don’t you know
Baby
Don’t you go
Think it over and stay
Let’s hang on, girl
To what we’ve got
Don’t let go girl
We got a lot
Got a lotta love between us
Hang on
Hang on
Hang on
To what we’ve got

I like the idea of ‘Lucky Peanuts’, it’s very 1950s/1960s. Sort of thing you’d read in an Archie Comic of that era. Good choice though Jill.

Yeah, I still sing it that way, even though I know better now! Lucky Peanuts, smoking banana peels … all part of that generation! Speaking of which … I actually tried smoking the banana peels once … bad move! Glad you liked the song!

I shoved a piece of string down a paper straw once and tried it, just because ….🤪
If I had kept up that sort of stuff, now I would no doubt be thinking Boris Johnson is the greatest PM we ever had! 🥴

The last time you went searching for Frankie Valli I ended up with the Dolls and it was great. I will say of all the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (I only know 2, salt and pepper) records, this was by far the one I disliked the least. Perhaps not really disliked as it was more Frankie’s voice I had a problem with. I generally didn’t mind the lyrics or the tune and had no problem with the backing but his voice caused an ear worm. I confess sometimes I have a similar problem with Billy Joel though I’m not a big fan anyway.
Cwtch.

Ah yes … “Rag Doll”. A lot of people seem to have a problem with Frankie Valli’s voice … I suppose it is my inability to hear well, but it never bothered me. Well, I’m glad that at least you weren’t completely offended by this one and that you disliked it less than some 😉

I think “Break it up” is actually “Breakin’ up” but that’s minor. I cannot remember where in their canon this song comes, but it was definitely a good one.

You may be right about the lyrics. I don’t usually double-check but just copy the lyrics, unless there is some glaring discrepancy. Glad you liked this one!
