What’s New? Just Another Mass Shooting

Friends and family members were gathered in the backyard to spend time together, share a meal, and watch a football game last night in a neighborhood in Fresno, California.  Today, four of those people are dead and at least six others in the hospital in critical condition.  Why?  How?

Guns.

Not much is known yet, but police surmise there were multiple suspects who sneaked into the backyard and opened fire.  Police are hoping to gain information from neighbor’s security cameras.  No victims’ names have been released as yet, and few details have been reported at this time.  Naturally, the usual and increasingly meaningless thoughts and prayers have been sent.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has expressed her outrage that gun legislation the House passed more than 260 days ago is being held up in the Senate …

“Enough is enough. The daily tragedy of gun violence continues to inflict terror and violence into communities across the country. Americans deserve real action to keep them safe, but Republicans continue to obstruct meaningful, bipartisan solutions to protect our children and communities. No one’s political survival is more important than the survival of our children.”

In my last post about a mass shooting, two short days ago, our friend Scottie provided the following information that I think is relevant here …

“The latest NBC News-Wall Street Journal survey finds that 89 percent of Americans favor expanded background checks for gun purchasers; 76 percent support “red flag” laws to identify dangerous persons and deny them guns, and 75 percent favor a voluntary buyback program in which the government would purchase firearms from current owners. Sixty-two percent of Americans favor a ban on the sale of semi-automatic weapons.”

89% … that figure includes a lot of gun owners.  Only 11% of the people in this country are against gun regulations.  It becomes obvious at this point that our elected representatives, particularly those of the republican party, do not represent the people of this country!!!  How the hell many more people have to die before these jackasses get voted out of office???

Guns.

Only in the United States of America are guns more sacred than human life.

  1. What else can anyone say or do? If the Dems under Obama, with control of both houses and the office can’t implement effective changes to our nation’s gun laws, what can we expect from this administration?
It does feel like the wild wild west of old… cause and effect. 😦

    • Hello 1EarthUnited. I understand what you mean, but the idea of an out of control wild west full of guns is a Hollywood myth. In fact most larger town and cities had strict gun rules and bans. The other thing about guns is that they were very expensive for the time and so was ammo. So the Idea that everyone was armed with fire arms and were practicing all the times shooting everything they could is totally wrong. What we have today in the US with gun violence and death is far worse than what they had in the early days of the country. Hugs

      • Thanks for clarifying and enlightening, Scottie! I think most of us have bought into the myth of the wild west and everyone having a six-shooter ready and loaded for bear! And yet, even in that myth, people mostly used their guns for self-protection, whereas in today’s culture, we use them for out of anger, to steal, or because we think we are somehow superior, whether to people of another ethnicity, or another species. Sigh. I’m not crazy about the human race at the moment. Hugs!

      • Thanks for the history lesson, makes perfect sense what you say. I was implying distinct lack of gun regulation in the old days, as long as you can afford gun and bullets then skies’ the limit.

  2. I had heard about this, but it didn’t seem to have gotten the same type of coverage as other mass shootings. Hopefully, that’s not a sign that we are becoming numb to such shootings. And yes, it’s a top priority for me, probably number one.

    • No, it didn’t get the coverage, mainly I think because everything is overshadowed at the moment by he impeachment hearings and related news. But also, as you say, to an extent we are becoming numb to it … that was why I wrote the title as I did. Sigh.

      • Hello Jill. I agree. I have read of two school shootings and this one you mention yet I admit my focus has been on the impeachment hearings. I even had to record one as I simply couldn’t find time to watch them all. I am watching the last part of today’s hearings as I couldn’t get to them this morning. Thankfully I can do both of those online. But it has taken a large amount of time away from other news and blogs I normally visit. Get some rest, you deserve it. Hugs

    • Yes, I’m sure it does, but … it shouldn’t have to be so. Kids 6, 7, 8 years old should not have to be learning what to do when somebody is shooting at them! This is so wrong, and the U.S. is the ONLY nation on the planet that puts guns ahead of people, that enables every fool in the country to own an unlimited number of guns, even assault weapons. Why? Sigh.

    • You’re exactly right … we are not much more than a piggy bank … keep paying the taxes, then sit down and shut up, or sit down and wait to die by the hand holding the gun. Sigh. It gets worse each year, and there is simply no reason for it. Guns belong in the hands of the military and law enforcement … not every Tom, Dick & Harry.

    • I agree … I sometimes see a post and think, “How can I ‘like’ this when it is such a horrible situation?” I’m with you … an ‘agree’ button would be a useful addition, that way the writer at least sees that you read and didn’t hate his/her post.

  3. Even one more is one too many. What right has one man to old up the progress of this legislation. What power do the Republicans endow their speaker with that he can decide what legislation they are allowed to hear. Is he so popular or so feareds that they will not remove him and place another person in the position. The blood of many of these victims is on McConnell’s hands. The only reason I can see for his intransigence is his ownership by the NRA and his not wanting to upset them.

    • You are quite right when you say that even one more is too many, and also when you say that Mitch McConnell has entirely too much power. It doesn’t have to be so … the Senate can vote on any bill without his permission, but the republicans are a bunch of self-serving cowards, afraid to go against the McConnell/Trump tyrants. They fear that Mitch and Donnie won’t support them in their next election. They fear their constituents will rise against them. It isn’t about doing the best thing for the nation and its people any more. We matter not. We’re just to pay our taxes like good little citizens and let them decide everything else. Oh … and speaking of the NRA … last I heard, McConnell has taken around $1.6 million from them. Explains a lot, doesn’t it?

  4. The only way things will change Jill is if the Dems achieve a majority in House, Senate, and White House, with a 60 vote filibuster proof Senate at that. Even then, can we be sure a couple of Dems might not decide to go along? It’s an outrage Jill. Thanks for keeping it out there though. We can never let this be OK!! I’m disgusted.

    • Sigh. I know, and that is unlikely to happen in 2020, at least for the Senate. And, as you say, there are always a few democrats from red states that will vote with the republicans to keep the people of their state happy. It isn’t about protecting lives for them, it’s about keeping their power, keeping their seat, keeping their donors happy. Politics as usual. Sigh. If I wrote about every shooting, I’d not be writing about anything else, and yet, I feel it’s important to keep this in the front of people’s minds. If I were to rank priorities for any candidates platform, this would likely come as #2, following climate change.
