Yesterday, I posted an article by Robert Reich, giving us a different viewpoint of Bernie Sanders’ campaign, and positing that Bernie could very well be the one best-suited to beat Donald Trump. Interestingly, as sometimes happens, Jeff and I were thinking along the same lines and about the same time I posted my Reich piece, Jeff posted this one. Same conclusion, a bit different approach. Great minds think alike! Thanks, Jeff, for this really great post!
“I’m not going to try and get into his mind because I don’t think there’s a whole lot of space there. I think he’s a kook. I think he’s crazy. I think he’s unfit for office.”
“You saw those images last night. We’re going backward here. This is a frightening, grotesque, and disturbing development in American politics.”
Were the above quotes from the Tuesday night Democratic freakout debate attacking Bernie Sanders? Well, they certainly could have been. But actually, the first one was from none other than lead Donald Trump sycophant Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) during the 2016 campaign. The second quote, also from the 2016 campaign, was from fellow Trump boot-licker Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL). My, how time flies.
Back then, if you remember, Trump was the reality TV show host attempting to win the Republican nomination for president of the United States. It was a crowded field…

My pleasure! I know you like Bloomberg, but may I ask … what are your feelings about Bernie?

I love Bernie, and if I thought he had a chance, he could very well be my favorite choice. In many ways, I consider myself a socialist like Bernie. My one concern philospophically is that I think I have heard he seems pretty weak on gun control, which is one of my top two issues. Jeff did a great job putting forth an argument where Bernie would have a shot against Trump. I guess I’m still not convinced. My wife and I are starting to really like Warren, we just don’t know why she seems to be fading so quickly… Super Tuesday will be quite interesting…

At first, I didn’t think he stood a chance either, but now … I’m not so sure. He definitely is not the toughest on gun control, but my hope there is that we elect a strong enough Congress and we make our voices heard OVER those of the NRA, and get something done. I wish Bernie took a stronger stance, with he would come out and say he’s for a ban on assault weapons, but … I cannot judge him on a single issue. I LOVE Warren, and she has always been my #1 choice. Sadly, she isn’t “anatomically correct” for a portion of this nation. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Sigh. Interesting … yes, it will be … interesting, ulcer-inducing, anxiety city …

my other big issue is the environment and I think Bernie is pretty good on that one. My wife and I were talking about which candidate would we have the most confidence in for handling the virus, and she thinks Warren, and I think Bloomberg. I think the experience of just having been in charge of something (mayor and/or CEO) is helpful in such situations (Trump being a notable exception). That’s why I’ve always felt that Governors are the ideal candidate for President, as opposed to a Senator or Rep. It may not have always worked out that way in reality, but in theory, it seems it should…

I’m with your wife … there is very little about Elizabeth Warren that I find lacking. Unfortunately, the masses seem to feel she is lacking one crucial body part, so her chances are somewhere around nil. Sigh. And yes, I’m definitely with you on the environment. Actually, I rank that at #1, for if we don’t take care of that and pretty quickly, none of the rest will matter by the end of this century. First step … rejoin (or commit to remaining in, since we haven’t actually left yet) the Paris Climate Accords.

Let’s hope Elizabeth does well on Tuesday!

Biden/Warren ticket?

I’m thinking that Bernie might have Warren as his running mate, but I think Biden will go with Kamala Harris … which would be fine with me, too! Some younger blood might not be a bad thing!

Those combos seem more likely. Maybe Booker with somebody?

While I would love to see Booker as someone’s VP, and then transition into the presidency, I don’t think this is his year. However, I DO think his time will come … I think just not yet.

Hope springs eternal. Booker vs Trump, jr. 2024?

In a fair fight, Booker would wipe the ground with Junior. Trouble is, as we saw in 2016 and may see again this year … it’s no longer a fair fight. But, fingers crossed!

Hi Jim, Ms Warren is very personable and electable, but she tends to flip flop on nearly all major issues which turn voters off. Ms Crystal Ball explains the Warren phenomenon succinctly:

Speaking of Mr Reich, his latest interview/ presentation is worth watching:

I think Bernie would make a fine president and so would Mayor Pete and Elizabeth. But not so much Joe Biden. He doesn’t seem as mentally sharp as Bernie, but I’d vote for him or anyone on the ticket against trump. I want to see someone who can eat trump for lunch during a debate, if trump even does one. And to me that narrows it down to Bernie or Warren…
I thought Bloomberg would be a better debater, but he’s not.
I have fantasies of Adam Schiff, but alas….
I want to see trump go down! We all must vote! BLUE!

I like Biden, but you’re right … he doesn’t seem quite on his game these days, and his lie about being arrested in South Africa was just … ridiculous! I’m wondering if his son’s death took away some of his acuity. Still, he would make a significantly better prez than the current one! Like you, Bernie and Warren are my top picks, so my fingers are crossed. Your final sentence says it all!
