Saturday Surprise — A Hodgepodge

I haven’t done a Saturday Surprise for the past two weeks, for other things have been occupying my mind and time, and I almost skipped it this week, as I am a bit under the weather with a respiratory ‘thing’.  But … I am told that a certain young man named Benjamin, who hasn’t been able to be here for quite a while, will be checking in today, so I wanted to do something!  So, I have just a couple of things to kick off the weekend with a smile!

Take a look at this and tell me what you think it is …cake-1I bet you think it’s a nice, healthy salad, right?  Wrong … look again …cake-1-aYep, it’s actually a cake decorated to look like a salad.  Some years ago I did a post about uniquely decorated cakes that looked like something other than cakes.  I have found a whole new batch and I thought you might enjoy looking at a few.

Oodles of creativity there!  I don’t think I could eat the hand, though.  There are a ton more – if you’re interested, head on over to Bored Panda and check ‘em out!

I’m sure to people in Australia, the current toilet paper, or loo paper shortage is no laughing matter.  But I couldn’t help but chuckle at a few things I saw.

The Northern Territory News, or NT News, based in Darwin, Australia, printed 8 blank pages on Thursday.  Why?

“Run out of loo paper? The NT News cares. That’s why we’ve printed an eight-page special liftout inside, complete with handy cut lines, for you to use in an emergency.”

The editor of NT News, Matt Williams, said in an interview with the Guardian Australia that it was “certainly not a crappy edition.”

And then, of course, there have got to be memes …tp-meme-1tp-meme-2

One store is reported to have imposed a 4-roll purchase limit … pity the family who has six children! tp-grocery-lines

How would you like to get up to your house looking like this one morning?ice-1It happened on the New York side of Lake Erie last weekend when gale-force winds and 15-foot waves from the lake encased the structures in 1-to-3-inch-thick ice.  In some places, such as rooftops, the ice can be up to 3 feet thick, so of course there is concern about structural damage among homeowners.

And to end this post with a big smile, meet Pim, the Skinny Pig from the Netherlands …

Now, go forth and have a fun & happy …weekend

  1. Fascinating and amazing stuff. One of the lake houses reminds me of the house in Dr. Zhivago. And the cakes take the cake! I’ve read about research that discovered if you look at one kind of food and expect to eat that, but are given another food without seeing it, you will taste the food you saw. So if they encased healthy food inside something that looks like cake, would we taste the cake? I think it’s worth a try.

    • Hmmmm … I’ve never heard that, but a time or two I have picked up my daughter’s heavily sweetened tea, thinking I had picked up my own unsweetened, black coffee, taken a sip, and gotten the shock of my life! Yeah, worth a try … not to figure out how to make turnip greens look like cake!

  2. The cakes are so strange–the potatoes and banana and turkey make me think they use real potatoes/banana/turkey and hollow them out. Does that seem possible, or am I not seeing something?

Those houses are gorgeous in a holy-crap-if-this-is-ours-we’re-screwed way–

  3. Jill, with the exception of the Hannibal Lecter like-hand, the cakes are fabulous. The hand gave me the willies. The shortage of TP is no laughing matter. Keith

    • I’m glad you liked the cakes! Yeah, the hand was creepy. Benjamin asked a good question … when those people woke Friday morning to ice-covered houses, how do you suppose they got out? Now I’ll be pondering that all day! 🤔

  4. Namaste, Miss Jill! Surprise, it’s me, Benjamin! I have been missing you so much. I hope you feel better very soon. This Saturday Surprise is so awesome! I love all of those cakes cause you know my Mommy makes neat cakes too. She made a Minecraft cake for my birthday, it was way cool and yummy too! The machine that gives you toilet paper is funny, but I like getting toys better. I saw some pictures of icy houses and stuff just like these. I wonder how long does it take until all of that ice melts. How can somebody get out if they are stuck inside and it doesn’t melt really really fast? I love the video of Pim, he is so cute! You get Two Thumbs Up and Ten Gold Stars cause this was the bestest special Saturday Surprise! I’m sending lots of neckbuster hugs and kisses to you. Oh, and a humongous smile too! Bye and Thank You! I Love You!

    • Namaste, Benjamin!!! I am sooooo happy to see you here this morning! I’ve missed you so so so much!!! I knew you’d like the cakes, and yes, I do remember that your Mommy is a wonderful cake maker! How have you been? I hope you’re taking good care of Gem this weekend! You know what? I had not thought about how the people would get out of their houses! But they went to bed on Thursday night with no ice, and woke up Friday morning living in ice houses, so … I don’t know how they got out. I’m so glad you liked this Saturday Surprise! Have a fun weekend with Gem, and thank you for the neckbuster hug, kisses and gold stars! Oh … Jolly says to tell you he misses you, too! I love you!!! ❤

    • Artistry for sure! I would never have the patience (not to mention a steady enough hand) to do that sort of decorating. I do well to slap a bit of icing on a cake … on the rare occasions I bake a cake! I love to cook, but baking is not my forte.
