There Is NO Smoking Gun …

It seems there’s a new conspiracy theory making the rounds, and while I typically try to ignore them, this one seems to have a few of my own readers despairing over Joe Biden’s chances to beat the face of evil in November, so I felt I must address it.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Derkach released edited fragments of recordings of phone conversations between Joe Biden and then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that took place in 2015.  In the calls, Biden can be heard saying that the United States will withhold $1 billion in promised aid until Ukraine replaces its then-Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin. True enough, and Biden himself revealed that conversation during a talk at the Council on Foreign Relations in January 2018.  The rumour, however, is that the threat to withhold aid was somehow tied to Burisma Holdings, where Biden’s son Hunter was employed.  Not true.  In the calls, Burisma is never once even mentioned, nor is Hunter Biden.  The aid was being held contingent on the replacement of the Prosecutor General because at the time, both the U.S. and Western European governments were trying to push the Ukraine to combat malfeasance (including the firing of corrupt officials).  At the time Biden and Poroshenko spoke, Ukrainian activists were taking to the streets to accuse the prosecutor general of neglecting his duty to prosecute corrupt officials and business figures.  Once again, these conversations had nothing to do with Hunter Biden or Burisma.  Nothing.

Now, it should be noted that Andriy Derkach is the son of a Soviet-era KGB officer, is a graduate of the KGB academy in Moscow and has ties to the Russian intelligence services.  I would remind you that our own intelligence services have warned that they have evidence that Russia is meddling in our November election and has been since at least sometime last year.  Evidence.  Facts.  Is this yet another attempt on the part of Putin and his band of thugs to keep Trump, his puppet, in office?  I believe so, especially in light of the fact that Russian state-controlled media outlet RT has actively promoted the rumour.

The rumours of wrongdoing on the part of Hunter and/or Joe Biden have been thoroughly investigated and no evidence of any wrongdoing was found.  PUT IT TO BED, people!  There is no smoking gun.  The only conspiracy here is that of Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump who, fully realizing that Trump stands little or no chance at winning the November election honestly, have set out to defraud the American people, to convince them that they are seeing shadows where there are none, and to steal the election from a man who might restore the democratic principles that have been shredded over the past three-and-a-half years.

Joe Biden may not be the most exciting candidate you’ve ever seen, but he is a solid candidate with no skeletons that I’m aware of in his closet.  He’s not a showman, like Trump is.  He doesn’t screech and yell, doesn’t demand denigrating chants from his audience, doesn’t threaten his naysayers, doesn’t contort his face to look like the phantom of the opera.  He is soft-spoken, yet intelligent and if you take the time to listen to him … really listen with an open mind … you will find he has good ideas, moderate ideas that may actually lead to compromise between Democrats and Republicans.  But, if voters sit on their fannies in November, saying that it doesn’t matter, then we’ll never know what Joe Biden might have accomplished for the people of this nation.

Now let me tell you what I think will happen if Trump is awarded another four-year term.  Some will say that if we can vote a Democratic majority into both the House and the Senate, he will be unable to continue on his present path of destruction, for just as the Republicans rendered Obama largely a lame duck for the last term of his presidency, the democrats would do the same for Trump.  But no, there’s a difference, a monumental difference … two of them, actually.  First, President Obama played (mostly) by the rules and though no doubt he was often highly frustrated at his ability to accomplish certain things, he respected the U.S. Constitution.  Donald Trump does not.  Second, during President Obama’s tenure in office, the Supreme Court leaned toward the left, especially after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.  With the retirement of Justice Kennedy, and the appointments of Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, the court, as we have seen in recent months, now leans largely toward … Trump.

I think that, emboldened by being handed a second term, though I fully expect him to lose the popular vote again, he will override Congress and impose his will via such machinations as executive orders, declaring a state of emergency, and along with his cadre of lawyers, taking anything he cannot accomplish otherwise, to the Supreme Court.  I believe he will further shred the principles laid forth in the Constitution and that by the next scheduled election in 2024, we will live under a full-fledged autocracy.

We are on a fast track to becoming a banana republic, some would say we already are.  The foundations of democracy that have held up well for 233 years are crumbling under the weight of Trump and his band of thugs.  He has fired Inspectors General who were tasked with keeping the administration honest.  He has filled his cabinet with people whose only qualification for the job is their oath of fealty to Donald Trump, not We the People.  Who will take a stand against him for the next four years?  I believe that chaos would reign, but that at the end of the day, he would be nearer a king than a president.

I cannot stress just how important it is that we remove Trump from office.  Already he has done damage to this nation, to our alliances, and to our reputation, some of which will take many decades to repair, and some of which will forevermore be a dark cloud over this nation and its people.  Please, my friends, do not let the rumours spread by Republican groups and Russian trolls cause you to lose your faith in Joe Biden.  This is just what Trump and the Republican Party are hoping … that we will become discouraged and let our guard down.  Joe Biden will be a solid leader, he will abide by the U.S. Constitution, and he will make a start at restoring the principles set forth in 1787 by the likes of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison and the rest of the Founding Fathers.

  1. It’s the Konspi-racy Thee-duh-ree mentality that allowed Trump to slither in to the Whitehouse.
A mindset for folk who won’t read history.
I have to hush mah mouth now because some folk I get on with reasonably well until they starting talking the talk.

  2. Trouble as I see it – Trump is a tenacious fungus resistant to topical treatment, Biden is a cure that might have worked had it been applied early enough. We have to cure the disease but options are limited considering the progression of fungal infection. I wonder if Biden hope is enough to eradicate metastasized Trump cancer. Trump prevailing in 2016 proved the unimaginable is possible. We should be very nervous. Biden doesn’t exactly present as a strong presence, regardless of how decent or sensible he might be. Sigh.

    • I like the way you put that! A ‘tenacious fungus’ is very appropriate! You’re so right that Biden doesn’t excite, he’s rather lackluster, but it is my sincere hope that the people of this nation have had enough of the circus act that they’re ready for solid, staid, maybe even boring. If not, they will have dug their own grave … and ours.

  3. Jill, you present credible counterargument for Biden’s innocence, I do hope you’re right and the Repugs won’t latch on to this nothing burger like with 2016 “crooked” Hillary email servers. I did blog about the recent revelations regarding Biden’s quid pro quo recorded statement, but noted that nothing will come of it. For the most part Americans have a full plate dealing with the virus, economic downturn, possible recession, housing/ banking collapse and loss of jobs. No one really cares about Russiagate, Ukrainegate, Obamagate or Burisma, these are distractions diverting our attention from real issues which affect everyday lives.
According to the polls, Biden enjoys an 11 point lead over Trump, if elections were held today he would most certainly win!
Trump is his own worst enemy, the elderly are turning against him, holding him accountable for not doing enough to protect the public. His ratings are finally dropping double digits to reflect his ineptitude.
Like I said, all Biden has to do is shut his mouth, hide out in his basement and STAY AWAY FROM THE MEDIA! He’s practically guaranteed to win BY DOING NOTHING. Biden’s gaffes are getting harder to ignore when he starts rambling about Black Voters, his racism starts to show. His sexual perversions are rearing up again with Tara Read and the “Me Too” movement. Also he should STOP telling stories about poolside adventures with young black kids, that is really creepy! It seems Biden is his own worst enemy as well. What is it about these politicians nowadays???
I think my concerns resonate with many of your readers… if only we had a stronger more presentable candidate that would ensure victory, we could all sleep better at night knowing that Trump remains a one term Prez.
Thanks again for setting the record straight, this story should blow over by the next news cycle hopefully.

    • Yes, let’s hope, but I seriously doubt it, for the republicans don’t have any viable platforms, so all they can do is try to instill fear into their base with lies and false tales of monsters under the bed. Sigh.

  4. You should be on the podium yourself. Such rhetoric.I promise too try and have a better view of Mr Biden and though I fully expect the Democrats to win all they need I will wish Joe into the White House.

    • Hah! Put me on a podium and I’d be stuttering like Mel Tillis. Biden is sometimes not the smoothest talker, and is guilty of sometimes opening his mouth before he thinks about what he’s saying, but there is nothing either corrupt or evil about him. I’m happy to see a bit of your optimism restored. And in case anybody wonders … yes, I did do my homework on this one … spent nearly 6 hours digging for facts and truth. Makes me wonder what the next conspiracy theory I’m gonna have to de-bunk will be? Perhaps the GOP will try to claim that it was Biden who actually assassinated Lincoln??? Sigh.

  5. Again, though, the Democrats run someone with the least likely chance to beat Trump. Like I’ve seen stated, you either vote for the rapist or the child molester. Sorry but I’m not buying that Biden’s character is better than Trump. I see them as equal, in that regard. Also Biden’s comment about black people, yesterday, does not help his cause. Actually makes it worse according to my African- American co workers. I could have lived with voting for Warren, but the party heads were not about to let that happen. Sometimes the DNC are their own worse enemy. I would like not to see another 4 years of Trump, but can’t go with Biden either. Used to be able to go with the lesser of both evils, but there isn’t a clear one right now. They’re both evil men.

    • While true that all politicians are corrupt, that’s a given. I just don’t see anyone as despicable as Trump, yes it’s a race to the bottom…. but we’re already scraping the bottom of the barrel. Can Biden be any worse? I say give him a shot, what have we got to lose.

    • Nah, wrong on all counts. Biden is an honest and sincere man who will, I firmly believe, make a start at restoring some semblance of order out of the chaos that is our current government. You can believe as you wish, but I see no evil in Joe Biden. A bit of a lout sometimes when he engages his mouth before his brain, but no evil.

      • Jill, thank you for responding. Saying Trump and Biden are similar is just flat out silly. Trump is the most corrupt and deceitful president in my lifetime, and as you note ever. He is acting just like he has always acted. Biden, is imperfect like all of us, but is a decent person. He screwed up yesterday and did something rarely does – he apologized. If people want to see into Biden, watch him console Meghan McCain on The View as she is crying over her father’s pending death.

People better get behind Biden or we will see our democracy continue its demise and our global reputation further shredded. Keith

        • Yes, Biden is a good man, one who will make mistakes just as we all do, but his will be genuine mistakes, not malicious actions like Trump’s. And, as you said, Biden is quick to apologize when he realizes his mistakes. In 40 months of Trump’s tenure in office, never once have I heard him apologize or even say “I was wrong”. No, it isn’t in his nature, and as you’ve said before, his mentor Roy Cohn taught him never to apologize.

          Liked by 1 person

          • And, we should not forget Cohn’s other advice “to sue everyone,” which led to Trump having 4,000 plus lawsuits and counting at the time of the 2016 election, including about 200 lawsuits where Trump refused to pay contractors for bad service. Thomas Wells (an attorney who worked for Trump) said in his op-ed piece, Trump often claimed bad service to avoid paying dry wallers, painters, electricians, plumbers. Keith

            • Agreed … funny when you think about it … he dodges the draft, the one worthy thing he might have done with his life … fails at literally everything else … and blames anyone and everyone for his own failures. If he is voted out in November, I expect a barrage of lawsuits to come next year once he is no longer deemed to be “above the law”.

    • Hello Jerry Roll. Your comment interests me. I would like more information. As with the others here I see a huge difference between the malfeasance of tRump and the life time of political life of Biden. You say both are evil. Please tell me what evils you ascribe to Biden and what you are basing that on.

On Biden’s accuser Tara Reade, every investigation into it leads to it being more improbable. Many of the things she said can not have happened according to her own co-workers as their own memories disagreed with her view of events, the physical locations and places she described do not exist or allow for anything such as she described, and she has proven to lie about her own history, education, and accomplishments. Ad to that her strange fascination with Putin and it really makes her story out to be fantasy or attention seeking than true.

On Biden’s attempt to sound with it and younger than his age in his interview with Charlamagne Tha God, Biden did something tRump is incapable of doing, he apologized. He did not try to make excuses, he flat out said he was too flippant and wrong, and it was not what he meant to convey. As most of the POC turned out for Biden over any of the other Democratic candidates including other candidates that are POC, they know his record and his record of verbal mistakes, and they don’t care as they know tRump is worse for them. Hugs

  6. You’re on the mark with Trump cheating his way to another 4 year term as POTUS. And he will take help from anywhere he can get it.
Yesterday, I noted in my comment that Trump has probably already cheated with mail-in ballots in Florida in 2018. Last night I rethought about that. Yes, he did probably do that. But with all his bitching and complaining about mail-in ballots in 2020, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”
In this case, Trump is Queen Gertrude. He is protesting mail-in ballots too much. Is it that HE ALREADY HAS PLANS TO COPY BALLOTS and mail them in after having all kinds of his followers making Xs with different pens in different styles? Seeing as everything he says is a lie, what he is really saying is he wants mail-in ballots. He will commit election fraud. Be prepared for there to be more ballots mailed-in than there are eligible voters in America.

    • Hmmmm … you give me some things to ponder upon here. I’ve long thought that his reason for objecting to mail-in ballots is that it would largely negate most of the GOP attempts to disenfranchise minority and poor voters. They close polling places in those neighborhoods early, before working people have a chance to get there after work. They implement strict voter ID laws that affect poor and minorities more than others. And it is the poor and minorities that tend to typically vote democratic. So, since Trump is already polling about 11% behind Biden, I’m sure he’d be happy to keep as many of the poor and minorities from voting, and mail-in voting would give them more opportunities to vote without the barriers they face if they must vote in person. Hopefully most states will ignore Trump, but then there’s still the issue of the USPS desperately needing funding that Trump is withholding. Already we are seeing problems with our mail delivery … how can we ensure the mail-in ballots are properly and timely delivered. And you have made some valid points, brought up some possibilities to add to my own. Sigh. It would have been so much easier if the Senate had grown a pair and convicted him back in February when they had the chance!

      • Yeah, we all wanted that, but we knew Moscow Mitch would never let it happen. But, how the hell did Mitchy Mouse ever become so powerful? He blocked Obama for four years, then let Trump run (reign) free for the next four, while completely blocking Congress. I’d love if someone could explain that to me. He looks like a short-sighted owl (sorry, owls). Who can believe anything he says?

        Liked by 1 person

        • You ask a question for which I have no answer. Mitch has some hold over all republican senators and I have no idea what it is, or how he managed it. I know that at least some people in Kentucky (his home state) are fed up with him, and he has a popular democratic opponent this year, so hopefully he will be voted out. He is every bit as corrupt as Trump himself, and represents no interests other than his own, as apparently can be said for every single republican in Congress.

      • Hello Jill. Here is one reason why Republicans do not want mail in voting. They try to make getting to the polls as hard as possible for people they think will vote democratic. Here in Florida they tried to make it illegal for anyone to pick up nursing home people or to bus senior citizens to polling places. Yes it was made illegal to take old people to vote. Here is another example of the lengths Republicans will go to make it impossible for possible Democratic voters to vote. Hugs

  7. Jill, Donald Trump and his sycophants has shown he will do anything to get reelected. He is the most corrupt and deceitful president in my lifetime, including Richard Nixon. Sadly, his followers do not realize he is as untruthful as he is. The Mueller report did no exonerate Trump and Barr shamefully covered for him. As long as Mitch McConnell gets conservative judges, he will kowtow to the corruption. America deserves better than Trump, McConnell and Barr. Keith

    • Well, I would take it one step further and say that he is the most corrupt and deceitful president in the 233-year history of the nation. His followers surely realize his deceit, but seem not to care, as long as he promises them what they want. Barr, to me, is no better than a river rat, and the same goes for McConnell. But somehow, we must have a fair election. We must have transparency and people must be told when Trump is lying, else this nation will never recover from what Trump will do over the next four years. Yes, we do deserve better.

      • Jill, I won’t argue with your claim. By the way, here are two facts I included in my recent post comparing America with Brazil and Russia on the pandemic response. The US has about 5% of the global population, but we have 31% of the COVID-19 cases and 28% of the COVID-19 deaths.

The president actually said the first result is “badge of honor” because we are doing so much testing, but others have tested more than we have and that is beyond an inane thing to say. The sad truth is COVID-19 will linger on and the numbers will get worse. What we need from a person in leadership is the truth, but that has never been Trump’s mission on any issue.

So, this is a long way of saying if Trump says it, it is likely untrue. Plain and simple. And, I realize he is in the White House and has the keys to the US car, but Americans should mostly ignore any thing he says. He has earned that reaction. Keith

        Liked by 2 people

        • Agreed … he cannot simply say we have tested more than other nations, for with 330 million people, we should be much further ahead in testing than we are. Italy, for example, has only 18% the number of people as the U.S., yet have performed 53,635 tests per million people, while the U.S. has performed only 40,749 per million. Yes, the virus will linger … and deaths worldwide will continue to mount, but only in the U.S. has the “leader” decided to ignore it and “get back to business as usual”. Well, there is one other world leader who’s actions are just as unconscionable, and it’s one who I’ve often said is Trump’s twin, Jair Bolsonaro. We all know Trump cannot be truthful, will never be the leader we need and deserve, but the big question is … when will his faithful 40% see it?
