Nothing To Celebrate

The Pentagon is reported to be “weighing a request from the White House to support a July Fourth celebration on the National Mall that may include military aircraft flyovers, band performances and other displays.”

I may be a minority of one here, but I think such a display would be in very poor taste.  We have had two black men murdered in the past month, simply for being black.  One of those men was murdered by the police, the very people we are supposed to trust with our lives.  We have more than a thousand people dying of a global pandemic every day, in large part because our nation was slow to respond and has put corporate profit over people’s lives.  We are more divided than we have ever been in our history, with political parties threatening to kill one another, religions attempting to force their views on others, a Congress that has become dysfunctional, Supreme Court Justices who have traded their integrity for a pat on the back from Donald Trump, and the list goes on.

This summer is almost certain to be a violent one, with a race war in the making and Donald Trump pouring fuel on the fire with his ignominious tweets.  The United States has failed miserably in its global role, leaving our allies hanging, trying to patch together agreements to make the world a safer place.  The United States is led by a cruel, evil dictator who would sooner see every one of us dead than to ever act on the behalf of the people who pay his salary.  The United States has denigrated many of those who live within its borders, given them reasons to fear for their very lives.  Immigrant children have been separated from their parents, some likely forever, simply because of their ethnicity.

Now, you tell me what there is to celebrate?  As today the ‘man’ in the Oval Office is threatening to fan the flames of the race war brewing in this country by threatening to send the National Guard to shoot protesters; as today the ‘man’ in the Oval Office and many of our elected legislators refuse to implement policies to protect the environment, to protect We the People. No, I don’t see a damn thing worth celebrating in this nation.

The sort of festivities Trump is asking of the Pentagon would be a slap in the face to most of us living here.  It would ignore the grief and horrors we are enduring, in favour of honouring a person who has no honour, of honouring a country that is being destroyed from within.  It would also have a hefty price tag.  The United States government is bankrupt, with more than $25 trillion in debt and very little revenue at this time.  HOW THE SAM HELL can we afford to spend millions on a damn circus show that benefits no one???  What about those who have been out of work for three months?  What about those who are about to lose their homes, or those who cannot afford food or medicine?  Would not that money, those millions of dollars, be better spent helping We the People survive the crisis that is happening in this country?

I do hope cooler heads in the Pentagon will prevail.  I hope that there are those who have the cojones to stand up to Donald Trump and say “No”.  Somehow, I have my doubts.  Friends, Donald Trump is proposing to use our hard-earned tax dollars for an ego trip, for a overblown display to attempt to send a message that all is well in the United States. All is not well in the U.S. today, and in fact nothing … NOTHING is right in this country today.  I, for one, will not be celebrating July 4th, aka Independence Day, this year.  I hope to celebrate our Independence Day on November 4th when Donald Trump has been told to pack his bags and get the heck out … that will be the day we regain our voices and begin to attempt to heal this nation.

  1. Oyez, Oyez. OyezThe call has been made, Trump is a loonie with no actual empathy for any people except maybe his daughter. He fully believes himself a fine leader well beloved of the people apart from some little plots against him from the left. Please leave your seats and they Ayes form on my left, the Noes on my right. erm I think the Ayes had better form up outside where there’s room. The Ayes have it.

    • I fully agree. If, in the wee hours on November 4th I hear that Joe Biden has 270 electoral votes, I will step out my kitchen door and set off fireworks! I suspect I won’t be the only one in my neighborhood, either!

  2. I totally agree with YOU! A 4th of July spectacle this year would not be about celebrating America anymore than it was last year, it would be about the same thing…a celebration of trump by trump for trump!! trump is so desperate to try and move beyond the tragedy and distress over Covid-19, and his bungled management of the pandemic amongst other things, that he will do anything deemed necessary to make it appear that all has returned to normal and thusly improving his chances for reelection in November. To hold a July 4th celebration on the National Mall would be another trump triumph following after a G7 Summit in Washington DC that is being planned to take place in late June. Per his May 20th tweet trump said he might reschedule the summit : “It would be a great sign to all – normalization.” On this past Tuesday enter the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEany telling reporters : “The President thinks no greater example of reopening in this transition to greatness would be the G7, and the G7 happening here.” In my less than humble opinion, both are merely photo ops for trump to prove that America and the World is returning to normal…all thanks to trump! Thank-you!

    • Hello Ellen. Angela Merkel has already declined tRump’s invitation to attend a G-7 meeting. She said it would be inappropriate. Look out for a shit storm of hate directed towards her and Germany very soon. Hugs

      • Merkel outright declined, Macron and Trudeau said they would be unlikely to attend, given the pandemic and their nations lockdown status, and so far as I know, Boris Johnson is the only one who accepted. Go figure … two peas in a pod.

    • So true. This spectacle is naught but an ego trip for Trump. Just like his plan to hold the G7 in June in Washington which, thanks to the good sense of Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and Justin Trudeau, has been ‘postponed’. He intended to show the world that the U.S. is just fine and dandy … nothing to see here, folks. Nothing in the U.S. is fine & dandy … we are about to have a summer of extreme violence in our cities, our death toll from the pandemic is still over 1,000 every day, the economy is in the tank, and people are going hungry and losing their homes. This is what the world needs to see … we are a mess! Kayleigh McEnany has had a lobotomy, I’m pretty sure. She is a parrot, spewing whatever lies have been programmed into her empty head on a given day. You are right … both the military spectacle and the G7 are/were intended to be photo ops … campaign tools. What a bloomin’ waste of money, yes? Huge Hugs!!! ❤

  3. Trump doesn’t CARE about the national debt. Just as he’s never cared about shafting those he owed money to in his private life. Why would you, even for a moment, consider that he cares about the American people any differently?

ALL Donald J. Trump cares about is pleasing and promoting Donald J. Trump.

    • Hello Nan. In a way because wealth and money has always been his since birth he feels not only that his situation is normal and his due, but that money just flows to him because it is supposed to. When he got into trouble as a young adult, daddy bailed him out. When daddy died, the NY / NJ mob bailed him out. When he got in way over his head in “luxury apartments” the Russian mob started money laundering through him, again making sure the money was there for him. The most glaring example was the property here in Florida he bought for an over inflated price and then couldn’t move. It became a millstone around his financial neck. It was threatening to take him down. Suddenly a Russian oligarch paid him nearly 100 million for the property, many times its worth. Really everyone was stunned, the property was a disaster that tRump way over paid. It raised a lot of suspicions. But it reinforced in tRump’s mind that first he was always right, and second money was his due, something that should always just be there for him. Oh and the first thing the new Russian owner did was bulldoze all buildings and scrape everything on the property.
      After way over paying? Hugs

      • Good analysis, Scottie! I knew about the sale of the property to Russia, but didn’t know the new owner had destroyed all but the land! Interesting. Yes, Trump is the very definition of the word “entitlement” (and many others I can think of, some with only four letters). Hugs.

        • Hello Jill. Not to be a pessimist, but with all the crime lord want to be’s in power in the US, have we been taken over by organised crime syndicates. Not just of the normal view of them, but of racial and political ones also? Weird to equate the government of our country with a criminal gang but we do it with other countries all the time? Hugs

    • No, he doesn’t care, because he will be long gone when it’s time to pay the piper. His followers don’t care, because they aren’t smart enough to understand the economics behind it … I don’t know how they manage their household budgets … probably not very well. I’ve never considered that he cares about We the People, but … the fact that he doesn’t should be a grave concern for everyone in this country, yet some 40% seem to think it’s all fine & dandy. Sigh.

  4. Agreed, Jill. As a country we have nothing to celebrate. Even in 1968 with all the violence and discord happening, we had unifying forces in DC. Not today. I also believe the summer will bring violence unseen before in our country. (Actually nothing could be more violent than slavery and we all know what had to be done to end slavery😠)

    • Hello Larry. Please take care of your self this summer. I think you are very correct about the violence and also the lack of normal social controls. The partisanship that has not only taken control of the government, the DOJ, but also a lot of police forces will mean they will let vigilante justice happen. People will be assaulted and attacked for just wearing the wrong message on their Tee shirts or caps. It will be for Democrats just as it was for LGBTQ people two decades ago. Be well. Hugs

      • I beg you both, Scottie and Larry, to take extra care this summer. I think things are going to get very ugly, and with the forecasters predicting the hottest summer on record … what could possibly go wrong, eh?

Y’know, though, I got an ornery streak the other day when I went to the grocery store … I was in a very grumpy mood already … so I wore my “I Miss Obama” t-shirt! I have the same bumper sticker on the back of my van, too!

    • I will put off fireworks in the wee hours of November 4th if I hear that Joe Biden has been declared the winner in the election. If the neighbors call the cops, so be it! But, even then, we are in for some rough times. Too many things have been ignored for far too long and there is an explosion just waiting to happen. Keep safe, my friend!

  5. Remember, Trump is “in love” with Kim Jong Un, and ordering an expensive, massive military parade while millions of his own citizens suffer is exactly the kind of behavior we’ve come to expect from Kim–and now of our deranged president.

    • Definitely so. He first got the idea for having a military parade from a ceremony he attended in France, and he wanted a huge parade whereby the military would salute him as they passed by. It’s all naught but an ego trip for him … at our expense, while people are dying and children are going to bed hungry at night. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  6. Hello Jill. I agree. I was really glad to read you brought up the situation about people who lost jobs and their incomes. There are people seriously scared, and a military spectacular is not where the money must be spent. But it is the Republican mind set. Every cent for the military industrial complex for profits nothing for the workers. The driving force behind this is the same as the last failed attempt, tRump’s ego that he seen one in France he mistakenly thinks celebrates their leader, the ones in Moscow dedicated to their leaders, same with North Korea. He wants to be the authoritarian dictator who is adored at every turn and can show how strong, how manly he is, by using a military display. One sad last thing, the military can not stand up to him much, he is the commander in chief and if she says do it, they have to as long as it it is somehow legal. Hugs

    • Yep, his feeding his huge, hungry ego seems to be his only goal in this, and likely it will take place. My hope is that nobody bothers to show up for it, leaving his ego deflated. In this, since there is no justification, Mark Esper could actually say no, but it’s highly doubtful that he will, since he is one of Trump’s hand-picked boot-lickers. Such a waste … an abysmal waste while children are going to bed hungry at night. I’d like to get one opportunity to kick Trump right in the you-know-where. Preferably with steel-toed boots on! Hugs.
