The following post by blogging friend Nan is one of the most powerful statements I have seen describing the reasons for the Great Divide between Trump supporters and the rest of us. Thank you, Nan, for sharing Mr. Castro’s words and for allowing me to share them as well.
Copied from a Facebook post:
THIS WAS ON A FRIEND’S PAGE: An anguished question from a Trump supporter: ‘Why do liberals think Trump supporters are stupid?’
THE SERIOUS ANSWER: Here’s what the majority of anti-Trump voters honestly feel about Trump supporters en masse:
That when you saw a man who had owned a fraudulent University, intent on scamming poor people, you thought “Fine.” (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/onpolitics/2018/04/10/trump-university-settlement-judge-finalized/502387002/)
That when you saw a man who had made it his business practice to stiff his creditors, you said, “Okay.” (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-hotel-paid-millions-in-fines-for-unpaid-work)
That when you heard him proudly brag about his own history of sexual abuse, you said, “No problem.” (https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/list-trumps-accusers-allegations-sexual-misconduct/story?id=51956410)
That when he made up stories about seeing Muslim-Americans in the thousands cheering the destruction of the World Trade Center, you said, “Not an issue.” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/11/22/donald-trumps-outrageous-claim-that-thousands-of-new-jersey-muslims-celebrated-the-911-attacks/)
That when you saw him brag that he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and you wouldn’t care, you…

Well they shouldn’t have to ask the question again after this,

I wonder if reading this would make any of them stop and think, perhaps look themselves in the mirror and see how they have gone against what they claim to believe in? You’d think so, but somehow I doubt it.

They will never change their minds, no master what he does. This is about mobilising those undecided and getting the votes out.

I imagine you’re right, but … it seems that reading this would surely make them stop and think? Sigh.

Hardcore supporters are definitely not stupid. They self-identify with their Chosen One. They share his dream of an all-white America. An America in which the George Floyds have no place. An America in which I, a brown-skin immigrant from a shit-hole country, have no place. I am rightly concerned about their MAGA vision for our nation. And all this racist divisiveness comes at a time when we most need to get together as a nation to deal with the existential crises threatening our species across this planet. Though I weep for America, I live in hope that we will save ourselves from the darkness within us.

I guess I equate that desire for an all-white, Christian nation with stupidity, for to me, that would be a horrible place to live. So much bigotry in all its forms, so little acceptance of the differences that make us each unique. In ordinary circumstances, the pandemic would have brought the people of this nation closer, just as 9/11 did for a time, but these are not ordinary circumstances, for we have a ‘leader’ who believes in the maxim “Divide and Conquer”. And divide us is exactly what he’s done. Worse yet, we have let him. Like you, I hope we can overcome this, that we can rid ourselves of the vermin in our government … I just wish I had more confidence in that.

Our young people are leading the way, Jill. I am heartened by the racial diversity of the young protestors. They need our support. We cannot fail them. We must not fail them.

Jill, I’ve just read a post, “Strengthening Voices In these Hard Times,” by progressive blogger JoAnn Chateau that I think would strengthen your confidence to overcome the darkness seeping out from the White House.

Thank you, Rosaliene! I have followed Joann’s blog for years, in fact it was one of the first I discovered those many years ago when I first began blogging. But, I rarely have time to visit other blogs these days, and so hadn’t seen this one. It is encouraging … thank you!

Some days I am also heartened by the values and stamina of the young in this nation, my friend. But other days, I wonder if they will even get the chance to change this nation. If there is hope for the future of the U.S., it definitely lies with the younger generation, but right now, there is evil afoot and for the first time in my 69 years, I am frightened for the future of the U.S.

Thanks for the reblog, Jill. It’s a great piece that obviously took a lot of work … and the more exposure the better.

I follow Adam-Troy Castro on Facebook, but had missed this post. It is so apt! Yes, the more exposure the better … I’d really love some republicans to see it and maybe stop and think.
