It Just Never Stops!

It didn’t take me long to hop down from my Jolly Monday mood to a darker one … about 12 minutes, I think it was.

Rumour has it that Trump is planning to address the nation sometime this week on the topics of race and national unity.  That would be about like me addressing a group of scientists on the topic of quantum physics.

You know what I’d really love to see?  I would really love to see the mainstream media refuse to cover his address.  The only reason for the address is to attempt to pump up his poll numbers which are on a downhill slide most every day, so this address will no doubt be a campaign rally of sorts, where as usual, he pats himself on the back and proclaims that he’s done a great job.  But here’s the thing … when he speaks, he does not speak to the nation, rather only to his base of supporters.  Why should he get free air time, free media coverage, to try to rescue his approval rating among approximately 40% of the adults in the nation?

If there is one person who is least qualified to speak about race and national unity, it is Donald Trump.  He is a racist … make no mistake about that one … remember the Central Park 5.  And unity?  HAH!!!  He has, by all accounts, been the most divisive ‘president’ in the history of the nation!  It’s his strategy:  Divide and Conquer.

I would urge the media to refuse to cover his speech, but I have no doubt they will feel obligated to cover it ad nauseam. You and I, however, do not have to watch it.  I fully intend to boycott it and would urge you all to do the same.  No doubt you will see parts of it all over the internet afterward, so if he says anything important, you’ll know it without having to put yourself through the anguish of having to watch him make an even bigger ass of himself.

Fox ‘News’ is not known for being particularly concerned with any of us outside of Trump and his support base, nor are they known for factual content.  Their opinion staff are known for being offensive and crude.  However, last Friday they hit a new low, even for Fox, on their segment, Special Report with Bret Baier.  Fox Business correspondent Susan Li was speaking about the economy and the stock market, when this graphic was placed on the screen …Fox-graphic-3

As it was shown, Li said …

“Stock markets hitting new highs despite the nationwide protests this week, historically there has been a disconnect between what investors focus on and what happens across the rest of the country. For instance, in 1968, the week after the tragedy of Martin Luther King, the S&P 500 rose over 2%, also up the week after the Rodney King ruling, and Wall Street trading on the reopening instead, this year in 2020.”

Unconscionable, abominable, horrific, racist, thoughtless, crude, cruel … there aren’t enough words to describe this segment.  Most people felt the same, and the hue and cry was loud enough to cause Fox to apologize the following day.  But, despite their apology, some things simply cannot be forgotten or forgiven, and this is one of them.

“This is absolutely outrageous and disgusting. This graphic tells every single @FoxNews viewer that Black lives can be exchanged for market gain.” – U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (Illinois)

“This is how they mourn the loss of black men at #FoxNews – by how much the stock market goes up. What. The. Hell!” – Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee

Fox’ apology consisted of …

“The infographic used on FOX News Channel’s Special Report to illustrate market reactions to historic periods of civil unrest should have never aired on television without full context. We apologize for the insensitivity of the image and take this issue seriously.”

Insensitivity???  No, folks, it was disgusting, outrageous and highly offensive to us all.  There are some things, such as a human life, that cannot be equated with money or profit.  Sadly, some have yet to learn this, including the person in the Oval Office.

I know a number of my readers live in Florida, but I really hope none live in Brevard County!  The Brevard County Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) posted this on Facebook on Saturday …brevard-1

“Buffalo 57” refers to the 57 Buffalo Police Department officers who resigned from a unit assigned to mass gatherings in order to show their support for two officers who were suspended after knocking down and seriously injuring a 75-year-old unarmed man.  A video that captured the event showed the man approaching two officers. One officer is seen on the video shoving the man, who then fell and hit his head. The video showed what appeared to be blood coming from the older man’s ear as he lay on the ground motionless while 57 officers walked right on past, some without so much as a glance at the man.  The two officers directly involved were charged with 2nd degree assault, and the other officers resigned from the unit in protest of the treatment of their “brothers in blue”.

“Atlanta 6” refers to six Atlanta police officers who were charged after a confrontation with college students where a video showed them using Taser guns on two students who were sitting in their car.

The next day, perhaps as an afterthought, they decided to also invite Minneapolis police to join their force, too …brevard-2So, these are the sort of police officers Brevard County wants to hire.  Words fail me …

  1. If there is one good thing to come out of the brutal murder of George Floyd, it is that it has shown the rest of the world – at least the part that watches the BBC – how disfunctional policing in the USA is. And the BBC showed Trump stating at a press conferecne that no police department should be disbanded. I hope he is unable to prevent those local authoroities that have decided to do so from doing the right thing. But disbandment is only the start. The process for selection and vetting of new recruits plainly requires extensive overhaul.

    • I fully agree … I hope this serves as a wake-up call to police departments across the nation. I’ve long thought that there should be a much more in-depth screening process for police officers. I know that many go into law enforcement for all the right reasons … they want to help make the world a better, safer place. But, obviously there are those who like the feeling of power it gives them, and those are the ones who will abuse that power. When I read about an officer who has had more than ten charges of improper conduct, of police brutality, and nothing has been done … it’s time to change the system.

  2. Jill, the credibility of Trump on racial injustice is not very poor, at best. Twice sued for housing discrimination (the second time when he did not follow the judge’s orders), the ad on Central Park Five, Obama and the birther issue, send the four Congresswomen of color back to their countries, sh**hole countries remark, good people on both sides of Charlottesville, attacks on Native Americans because they were setting up casinos, and his reaction to the protests are just top of mind examples.

As for the Buffalo cop who pushed the seventy-five year old white man down, what bothers me even more, is he nor his fellow officers did anything as the old man bled from his head on the ground. The man was bleeding from the head and this bully with badge stepped over him and made sure the person behind him did so as well. The police have a hard job, but don’t make it harder by not policing bad actions and actors. I am grateful the Buffalo police fired this person.

My comment to the person recruiting him to Florida is what if this had been your father or uncle or brother? Just because someone has a badge does not mean they cannot be a jerk. Keith

    • Yes, those are all prime examples of Trump’s racism. He claims he isn’t racist, but talk is cheap … actions speak much louder and his actions yell bigotry. That bothered me the most, too … all 57 of those officers walked right on by as if that poor man was just a piece of trash littering the sidewalk. And today, I read that Trump has started a conspiracy theory that the old man was aiming some sort of scanner intended to black out police communications and that he intentionally fell. WHAT A JERK! Sigh.

      • Jill, the person in the White House is getting push back on his inane accusation of the 75 year old man. The man is bleeding from the back of the end Mr. president. One thing that no longer surprises is just when you think the president cannot go any lower, he goes lower. Keith

  3. Yes, trump is going to address the nation again…just as soon as he can spin enough lies in an attempt to cover his butt! Albert Einstein said it well : “We all know that light travels faster than sound. That’s why certain people appear bright until you hear them speak.” In trump’s case do not be confused by the seemingly bright appearance, it is just the orange glow of his face. Thank-you!

    • Ha ha … good one! But, in truth, he never even appears bright! He always rather looks like a moron with his odd facial contortions, pocky skin and fake hair! A disgusting excuse for a human being … Hugs!!!!

  4. I saw that Fox News graph the other day and my blood was boiling. If that isn’t proof positive that there’s profits after black people get murdered let alone how mainstream news outlets crave that kind of financial increase, then I don’t know what is. Un-freaking-believable. That Floridian police department should be ashamed of themselves. This should also be a wake-up call to any white allies against racism. If you have a police department (Buffalo, NY) willing to stick up for people who assaulted or just watched an elderly white man have his skull crack on the pavement and bleed, then what does that say about other police departments across the country staying on code and standing up for abusive behavior? Not only that, but Buffalo PD even fired a cop and cut her pension for DARING to stop a co-worker from abusing a black man. Shame that the good cops out there get punished for doing moral things while the bad ones get rewarded.

    • Like you, I was incensed over that graph that Fox News showed … and their apology made me angry all over again, for they only said they shouldn’t have shown it “without context”. True enough, but they shouldn’t have shown it AT ALL, and they still don’t seem to get that. I hadn’t heard about the Buffalo cop being fired for trying to stop her partner from abusing a black man. Unconscionable? Absolutely! But, are we becoming inured to it all? This nation is on fire, and we cannot even trust the very people who are sworn to protect us. I remember when I was little, all those nearly 70 years ago, my parents telling me that if you’re ever in trouble, find a policeman for he is your friend and he will help you. I cannot give the same advice to my grandchildren today.

      • Yeah, I don’t blame you or anyone with a shred of humanity. Even for Fox News, that was low for them. I can’t stand the “out of context” defense. What other context were they trying to imply? That should’ve never happened and I’m glad social media lit up Fox News for that graph. The fired officer is Cariol Horne, in case you’re wondering.

Wow, that was certainly powerful saying that about not giving the same advice you received during your childhood.

        Liked by 1 person

        • I agree … there was no ‘context’ that could have justified the use of that graphic. Thanks … I will look into Cariol Horne! Yes, I don’t think it’s so much that times have changed since I was a child in the 1950s as that we’ve opened our eyes and seen beneath the veneer.

          • Exactly!

Sure thing. It’s such an infuriating story and it really hows Buffalo PD’s stark hypocrisy. It’s sad how things supposedly aren’t much different from the 50s and that was decades before I was born. I’m glad people are waking up though.

  5. I think losing the services of the Buffalo 57, and anyone else who quits their police forces for similar reasons, is a good thing for anti-racism. Let racist cops know you don’t appreciate sharing a uniform with them. They make everyone look bad.

    Liked by 3 people

    • I agree … but they didn’t quit the force, just that unit they were in, so they are still cops, still out there threatening the peace and safety of the community. And, I’m sure they are not alone. Sigh.

      • I like that Minneapolis is talking about disbanding the whole force, including the Blue union. Wholesale change has much more chance of succeeding than trying to fix a bit at a time.

        • From everything I’ve read, the police unions are a huge part of the problem and the main reason so many cops have gotten off free after unwarranted killings. Maybe time to disband them altogether.

            • I saw your comment there … I’m not sure what I think about this just yet. I don’t think we can afford to completely disband the police and start over, for in the interim, that would give people like white supremacists carte blanche to go on a shooting spree in a black neighborhood. But, no doubt, we need to do some MAJOR housecleaning!

                • It could, but … to me, that would be too much like martial law, and with Trump in office, I have no trust that he wouldn’t use that to his advantage. I don’t have any better solution, though … it’s a complex situation that isn’t going to be solved easily or quickly, I fear.

                  • I did mention not if Trump is still in power, but no matter. In my mind it will need to be done sooner or later. The unions support the blue wall, and that helps only the police. That wall has to be destroyed.

                    • You did, but … unless we are lucky enough for some fate to befall him, he will be in power for at least another 7 months until January 20, 2021, and something needs to be done now … we cannot wait until Biden is elected to make changes. I agree … that “blue wall of silence” must go!

  6. That’s one subject Trump can have nothing constructive to talk about. He’s doing his best to fill the judiciary with bigots.
Fox News are proving yet again what insensitive idiots they are. Such foul people.
Brevard County are showing why the whole system needs a clear out top to bottom.

    • ‘Tis the complete truth. Trump has done everything imaginable to divide this nation, and he has succeeded. For him to talk about unity is the biggest joke of the century.
I’m thinking you’re right about the police organizations ’round the nation. I know there are good, probably mostly good men and women on every police force, but there is also a heck of a lot of evil and the police unions have been successfully defending and protecting those bigots. It is past time for it to STOP!

  7. Nope, it never stops. I wouldn’t watch that piece of you know what if you paid me a million bucks. Of course the media will broadcast it because they’ve tried to normalize him for the past 3.5 years. I’m with you Jill. They need to NOT air the damn speech. Let him give it to his MAGA crazies at the next rally, supposedly in two weeks I heard. Cram them all into an arena, make it mandatory to NOT wear a mask, and let them have at it. These people deserve each other.

    • You’re right, and We the People could send one heck of a powerful message if nobody tuned in to watch him preen and pat himself on the back. We could convince the media that we don’t want him on our televisions, radios and computers. How, I wonder, can we convince the bulk of people in this nation to boycott the speech? I’m with you … cram them all in, let them breathe on one another all day long, and let the chips fall where they may. They definitely deserve whatever they get.
