I last played this song in November 2108, and tonight I am reprising it because … because … well, just BECAUSE!
There is no rhyme nor reason for deciding what song I will play on any given night. Sometimes it is one that has been stuck in my head all day and I want to get it out of my head and stick it in yours. Other times, I might play a song for a specific person, and then there are nights that I go flipping through my Ipod playlist to jog my memory. Tonight’s song popped into my head as I was folding the never-ending towels, and since it was still there (in my head) when I sat back down at the computer, I decided to take a quick listen. Within seconds, it was like a one-two punch, the breath had left my body and I knew … this is the one for tonight!
This song is from the 1983 film Flashdance, written by Italian composer Giorgio Moroder (music), Keith Forsey and Irene Cara (lyrics), and performed by Cara. In addition to topping the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Cara’s only #1 song, it earned a platinum record, the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Not bad, eh?
Flashdance…What A Feeling
Irene Cara
First when there’s nothing
But a slow glowing dream
That your fear seems to hide
Deep inside your mind
All alone I have cried
Silent tears full of pride
In a world made of steel
Made of stone
Well, I hear the music
Close my eyes, feel the rhythm
Wrap around
Take a hold of my heart
What a feeling
Bein’s believin’
I can have it all
Now I’m dancing for my life
Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
Now I hear the music
Close my eyes, I am rhythm
In a flash
It takes hold of my heart
What a feeling
Bein’s believin’
I can have it all
Now I’m dancing for my life
Take your passion
And make it happen
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
What a feeling
What a feeling
(I am music now)
Bein’s believin’
(I am rhythm now)
Pictures come alive
You can dance right through your life
What a feeling
(I can really have it all)
What a feeling
(Pictures come alive when I call)
I can have it all
(I can really have it all)
Have it all
(Pictures come alive when I call)
(Call, call, call, call)
I can have it all
(Bein’s believin’)
Bein’s believin’
(Take your passion)
Make it happen
(What a feeling)
What a feeling
(Bein’s believin’)
Happen
(Take your passion)

One of the better power ballads out of the 1980s.
Actually I was fascinated by the back story of the character being an 18 year old woman welder. That’s a story in itself.

True! I never knew the storyline and haven’t seen the movie … so, should we expect an 18-year-old welder to turn up in your next book?

‘No he an’t! There’ll be no 18 year-olds eyelash-batting anywhere at anyone!..Wotever a welder is!’🙎🏻
(Sorry ’bout that I thought Karlyn was out checking the trees were ok)

Heh heh … you tell ‘im, Karlyn!!! Keep ‘im in line now! ❤
'Tis okay, Roger … always a joy to see Karlyn! Um … checking the trees were okay? Like, did you think they might have blown down overnight, or were you worried about root rot?

I love trees Jill, they look after me, I look after them. An’ where I need to think long and hard I climb up one an’ sit safe an’ cuddled up in its branches. 👩🏻
(Got a lot to think about these days with responsibiliites)

I love trees to … I am still so angry that so many were cut down here in da hood for no reason. When I was young, I loved climbing trees and cuddling up in their branches … I often fell asleep up there. Just be sure not to let Roger climb any, okay?

How wonderful!!! I talk with bees every day … I even let the bumblebees (they are gentler than the rest) sit on my nose so we can have a lovely chat! You’re teaching ‘im well!!! Keep up the good work!

It’s the best way to communicate with them, I tell ya! They look you right in the eye …

I was out a garden once, weeding, when a little worker bee landed on my shoulder. The sacks on their little legs were bulging and their abdomen was rising and falling.
I just got the impression they had stopped to catch their breath before they set off again.
Love that memory.

I know … some nights I just don’t have a song in my heart and have to go in search of. Glad you like this one!

Still haven’t seen the movie. I must be weird.

Well, then I must be weird too, for I haven’t seen it, and am not likely to. I hear it’s a good movie, but there are only so many hours in a day, and there are other movies I’d rather see.
