Short, Not-So-Sweet, And To The Point

Tonight’s post is short … I have a single rant and a poem, and then I am going to bed, for I am tired, angry, sad, and my left eye is swollen shut (no, I didn’t get punched — I petted the cat, then rubbed my eye).  I’ll be back later with renewed energy (I hope).

Gross misuse of OUR MONEY!!!

In the United States today, we have a rising national debt that is currently at $24.95 trillion.  We have a raging pandemic taking a thousand lives a day.  We have high levels of unemployment unequaled since WWII.  We have people being evicted from their homes.  We have people who cannot afford to buy food to feed their families.  We have so many needs in this nation right this very minute.  Meanwhile, Melania Trump is planning to spend OUR money to … wait for it … remodel the f**king Rose Garden!  With only 100 days left until the election, odds are she won’t be there to ‘enjoy’ it for long, and what is this going to cost us?

According to the New York Times

The project, which includes electrical upgrades for television appearances, a new walkway and new flowers and shrubs, is meant to be an “act of expressing hope and optimism for the future,” according to a set of prepared remarks Mrs. Trump will deliver to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House later Monday morning.

“Our country has seen difficult times before, but the White House and the Rose Garden have always stood as a symbol of our strength, resilience and continuity.”

Bullshit!  ‘Hope and optimism for the future’???  If Trump gets re-elected, there will be NO hope and NO optimism and NO future for this nation!

If Trump wants the Rose Garden renovated for the purpose of enhancing his campaign for re-election, let him pay for it!  The people of this nation cannot eat the flowers and new electrical system in the Rose Garden!!!  It will not provide much-needed equipment to hospitals to help with the overflow caused by the coronavirus!!!  It will not pay the rent, so a family won’t be thrown out on the streets!!!  Get your priorities straight, Donald and Melania, else get the hell out of the White House altogether!  Go back to Mar-a-Lago and redecorate as much as you like on your own dime and your own time!

First Trump Came …

You’ve all heard the famous Martin Niemöller poem, “First They Came …” many, many times, right?  The following poem is a modern version of that, written by Gideon Lichfield, MIT Technology Review’s editor in chief.  This is Niemöller’s poem rewritten for Donald Trump’s America, and published in Quartz in June 2016, even before the election that ushered Mr. Trump into the White House.  I think it speaks volumes today, more than four years later.

First Trump came for the women
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a woman.

Then Trump came for the people with disabilities
And I did not speak out
Because I did not have a disability.

Then Trump came for the African Americans
And I did not speak out
Because I was not African American.

Then Trump came for the Mexicans
And I did not speak out
Because I was not Mexican.

Then Trump came for the Muslims
And I did not speak out
Because I was not Muslim.

Then Trump came for the gay, bi, and trans people
And I did not speak out
Because I was not gay, bi or trans.*

Then Trump came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew.**

Then Trump came for the journalists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a journalist.***

Then Trump came for the judges
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a judge.

And now Trump is coming for the Constitution of the United States
And if I do not speak out, what am I?

* Actually I am one of those, and I didn’t speak out about that.
** And one of those, and didn’t speak out about that either.
*** Ditto.

I think he summed it up fairly well, don’t you?  Think about it.

  1. Well, I read (Newsweek), “A Trump administration official told the Times the garden refurbishment is financed by private donors, with support from the National Park Service. Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s Chief of Staff, confirmed to Newsweek that “private donations” will fund the Rose Garden project. A formal announcement issued by the White House said the same.”

Of course, given Con Don and his administration’s poor accounting (I’m dubious that any of them can actually count) and their, unethical nature, I’m sure that taxpayers’ monies will be used.

Wherever the money comes from, M. Trump’s renovation plan spits out the same message as her infamous coat: “I really don’t care. Do U?”

I am sick of hearing that message from the Trumps and his cult, because I do care,

    • I hadn’t heard that … I think I’m even behind on my newsing! But, I don’t for a minute believe it for a minute, either, for I am a member of the National Park Service and this is the first I’ve heard of it. But then, I’m a cynic and don’t believe a single word that comes out of Trump’s or his cronies’ mouths. You’re so right … that jacket did it for me … showed her for the arrogant ***** she is. Like you, I care … very much … and it sickens me that our nation has been taken over by this wealthy narcissistic bunch of rats. Sigh.

Cheers to you, too, my friend!

  2. It would appear that Melania has grown to love her current address. She is not only “expressing hope” but also “optimism for the future” of another 4 years of entertainment at the taxpayer’s expense. Melania’s lesser, though similar to her husband’s, self aggrandizement has proven the caring about few beyond herself. That jacket deliberately worn years ago said it all! Gideon Lichfield’s poem about trump’s America is even more frighteningly accurate today than the four years ago when it was written! One voice speaking out is a beginning, but it will take many more voices at the ballot box in November to bring about the end of trumpian rule. It has oft been said that “a leopard can’t change its spots” and trump is the embodiment of that idiom…Speak Out America, or it will only get worse!! Thank-you!

    • Like you, I will NEVER forget that jacket and the circumstances under which she wore it … going to pay a visit to the kids on the border who had been so cruelly separated from their parents. You’re so right about Lichfield’s poem … hard to believe he wrote it even before the 2016 election! Prescient. I believe that sometimes people, under the right set of circumstances, can become better people. But Trump is 74 years old and if he hasn’t changed his spots by now, he isn’t going to. George Wallace changed his after being shot, almost fatally. Perhaps that would change Trump, but somehow I don’t think even that would, for his brand of evil is in the DNA.

  3. Jill, Melania seems like a different person when she is not accompanied by her husband. What strikes me is this controlling husband did not let her do what most first wives do and that is be active in a cause. By way of narcissistic projection, her lone focus was the engineered one of online bullying, something her husband does so relentlessly.

This last effort seems to be one of desperation, as she senses her husband’s presidency may be limited. As you note, I think it is a throw anything against the wall and see what may stick. My guess is it is an attempt to reach out to suburban wives who do not like her husband. I don’t know.

What boggles my mind, for a person who wants to be seen as a good president, actually being presidential does not get considered very much. After being briefed six times on the pandemic risk in January and early February, why he chose to naysay, downplay and call it a hoax is beyond me.

But, not being presidential is modus operandi – as former DOD director and general James Mattis said, Trump does not even try to unify us. Keith

    • I don’t have much respect for Melania. For one, it’s apparent that she married Trump for money and citizenship for herself and her parents. For another, her anti-bullying campaign has gone nowhere, and as you say, it’s an irony anyway, as she’s married to the biggest bully on earth. And to top it off, when she wore that jacket on her way to visit the kids who were separated from their parents at the border, it wasn’t only in poor taste, it was a slap in the face. So, while I think Trump likely treats her abominably, she knew what she was letting herself in for, and she could walk away if she chose.

I think Trump has a contorted notion of what it means to be a “good” president. It seems to me that he thinks brute power, being seen as ‘tough’, will earn him a place of honour in the history books. It won’t. What will, however, earn him a place in the history books is his abominable handling of a pandemic, causing far more death than would have otherwise been necessary, his attempts to use government forces against citizens, and much more. Mattis was spot on there … Trump’s motto must be “divide and conquer”, for he has done more than any other president to divide the people of this nation. Sigh.

      • Jill, the divide and conquer mindset is how he runs his business. Pit people against each other. I will add as a former consultant and manager, this is a horrible way to run anything. Infighting leads to communication breakdown which leads to not being able to attract or keep good people. Keith

        • You are so right about that, Keith. Also as a former manager, I know that this strategy is no substitute for uniting people and encouraging teamwork. It’s no wonder that many former members of his administration have referred to it as ‘chaos’.

        • Thus, the many bankruptcies. Has he ever paid back a debt he owes. I guess he must have a few, just to give himself the appearance of honesty. But how many people got nothing back from him, how many businesses went bankrupt because of him?

          • Good questions all, but I don’t know the answers. I know he has shafted many contractors and business partners and has been sued many times. This is, in part, why his financial records need to be disclosed to Congress and the public.

  4. Trump is running out of time to have his war, but he is still trying. He wants a civil war to destroy whatever connections American people still have left.
Melania, for her part, cannot have a war, so she has to leave her mark on the White House itself. What better way than upgrading the Rose Garden, to add to her tennis courts. Money, it grows on trees, and the backs of the wage-slaves. They aren’t human. Noone cares about them.

    • If the UK does not live up to its commitments to help nations poorer than their own, then they might as well be Trumpian Americans, who only want to help Americans. I am from Canada, where we still have millions of people below the poverty line, especially First Nations people, Metis, and immigrants. But imagine what would become of other nations if we helped only ourselves. Nations are just figments of our imaginations. People in need live everywhere. No, we alone cannot help everyone, but if we don’t try we give away our humanity.
However, if the world’s richest 1% would open their eyes, hearts, and BANK ACCOUNTS, maybe there would be no more poverty, sickness, or hunger. There is enough money in the world to help everyone, including those in our own homelands, but with no public will to help each other. Where is the will?
And just so you know, I myself and my spouse live below the poverty line. I’m not complaining, I have food and shelter, and enough to keep our pets fed. We are happy with what we have. That is all we need.

        • I guess it’s easy to want nothing when you know that is all you can have. But our society teaches us to always want more, and our credit cards allow us to get it. That is just so wrong. I cannot remember the latest figures for debt in Canada, but I think the average is something like $30,000 per individual. Hopefully that DOES NOT INCLUDE children.
Get a credit card, and you can have everything you want RIGHT NOW. And don’t worry, you’ve got a lifetime to pay it back. And THEY say we are free. We are as much slaves today to the rich as were the Africans forced to come to America to die in bondage and suffering.
Make America Great Again. Trump is really saying MAKE AMERICA WHITE AGAIN! Slaves are still slaves, no matter the colour of our skin.
As long as we owe, we cannot grow.

        • I do hope your OAP is better than ours in Canada. I know I don’t get much because I didn’t contribute much, having lived mostly on the edges of society, but there really should be a minimum basic income for all, from adulthood to retirement. I am not visibly handicapped, but I do have more than my share of medical issues. I couldn’t work more than I could work, through no fault of my own. No one told me health issues from my 30s on would mean less income as a senior. The capitalist world is not always a good place to be.

    • This is the first time I realized you were in the UK! Somehow I thought you were in the U.S. Yes, you do indeed have your own troubles, and your PM seems to want to emulate Trump these days — not a good thing!
