Sorry, folks, for another redux tonight, but I am not feeling well and simply must get to bed. Anyway, it was 2018 the only other time I played this, so you’ve probably forgotten, yes?
The folk/rock group America originally consisted of three members: Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek. They were all U.S. Air Force brats whose fathers were stationed in the UK. A Horse With No Name, went on to top the American singles chart for three weeks in early 1972 and reached No.3 in the UK. I like the song, and can actually remember most of the lyrics, but I have one question: why didn’t the dude give the horse a name???
A Horse with No Name
America
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la
After nine days I let the horse run free
‘Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
there was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with it’s life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
‘Cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain
La, la

I named the horse Festus, honestly if you’ve gone that far you’d surely name your friend. It is supposed to be ( so I once read) an allegory song, a drug experience midst the ordinariness of life.

Festus is a good name for him! Like you, I thought it was a bit heartless to not even give the poor horse a name. Thanks for naming him!

I always liked America’s songs, but their lyrics were just kinda nonsense. Like:
“But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn’t, didn’t already have
And cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad”
Huh?

Heh heh … you’re right, but I think many in the time were so high they didn’t notice! I didn’t care … just liked the tune!

Luv it! Someone should give that poor horse a name. ❤

I didn’t either, but I still liked it … one of the few that I actually know the lyrics to!

Thanks, Mary! I think stress plays a huge role in our well-being. It’s hard not to let it all build up over time. I’ll be okay in a few days.

I have always felt like I was that horse, just looking for someone to let me go back into the desert. Feel better and stay warm.

I can relate to that! Long ago I decided that if I have to come back to earth again, I will do so as a wolf … I’m done with humans! Thanks, Shira … still under the weather. I have several of your comments saved for when I feel better, as I wanted to be able to give you a thoughtful answer, and I’m just not up to that at the moment.

I could never understand why the horse had no name either, Jill. in fact, I never got the meaning of the song.

Jill, the group America offers a lot of easy listening songs with interesting lyrics. This is a good example. They avoided being too sappy (Muskrat Love being an exception). I love their harmony. I also like “Ventura Highway,” “Sister Golden Hair,” and “I need you” to name a few. Keith

I fully agree … and love all three you mention! I’ve added them to my tbp list!

I only know the “been through the desert with a horse with no name” part… so the brain refrain will be limited. haha

Ha ha … I can so relate!!! Most songs, I know one or two lines, so I just sing those over and over! Being near deaf for much of my life, I often have the lyrics all wrong, so often my daughter will question just what the heck song it is I’m singing! That’s if she doesn’t have here headphones on to block out my singing altogether! 🤣

One pod of cats used to LOVE my singing, especially my rendition of “Casey would waltz with the strawberry blonde!” They would come to the “performance” from all over the house.

” … And the bad played on.” I well remember that one! Most of our readers probably don’t. You must surely sing better than I, then, for my cats all scurry under the sofa when I start singing! We used to have a cat, Orange, who was deaf and he tolerated my singing okay! 🤣
