♫ Right Down The Line ♫

Right_Down_the_Line_-_Gerry_RaffertyNot long ago (July) I played Baker Street, and Larry of ‘Just Drive Will You’ fame mentioned this song, Right Down the Line.  I fully intended to play it shortly thereafter, but as often happens with my good intentions, like my car keys, they get misplaced.  However, after I had to nix Under the Boardwalk because I played it in September 2019, and Spirit in the Sky because I discovered it had religious connotations (who knew???), I dug back through my notes and found that I had promised this one!

Other than the fact that this was written and recorded by Gerry Rafferty and was a follow-up song to Baker Street, I am not able to find much in the way of background or trivia about the song.  I don’t think I knew that Rafferty was Scottish … I did learn that much … or perhaps I knew it and had forgotten.  I also did not know that Gerry Rafferty died of liver failure in January 2011.  By all accounts, his life from about 2008 was not a happy one.

The song reached #5 in Canada, #12 in the U.S., and strangely did not chart at all in the UK.

Right Down the Line
Gerry Rafferty

You know I need your love
You’ve got that hold over me
Long as I’ve got your love
You know that I’ll never leave
When I wanted you to share my life
I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you woman
Right down the line

I know how much I lean on you
Only you can see
The changes that I’ve been through
Have left a mark on me
You’ve been as constant as a Northern Star
The brightest light that shines
It’s been you, woman
Right down the line

I just want to say this is my way
Of tellin’ you everything
I could never say before

Yeah this is my way of tellin’ you
That every day I’m lovin’ you so much more
‘Cause you believed in me through my darkest night
Put somethin’ better inside of me
You brought me into the light
Threw away all those crazy dreams
I put them all behind
And it was you, woman
Right down the line

I just want to say this is my way
Of tellin’ you everything
I could never say before

Yeah this is my way of tellin’ you
That every day I’m lovin’ you so much more
If I should doubt myself
If I’m losing ground
I won’t turn to someone else
They’d only let me down
When I wanted you to share my life
I had no doubt in my mind
And it’s been you, woman
Right down the line

  1. Jill, he has such a smooth sounding voice. These two songs are exemplary. When “Baker Street” came out, I lived in Atlanta and when saw its Baker Street, I would start singing. Keith

    • My favourite remains Baker Street … I was about to say I wasn’t familiar with ‘Night Owl’, but then I went and listened, and with the first few notes I immediately recognized it … just didn’t remember the name.
