♫ The Closer I Get To You ♫

I was washing dishes this afternoon (no, they haven’t fixed the #@$% dishwasher yet!) when this song popped unbidden into my head.  I hummed it for a while, sang a bit of it (no doubt with the wrong lyrics, but hey … at least the cats didn’t start howling as they sometimes do when I belt out a tune!)  Then it left my head, to be replaced with other ‘stuff’ such as laundry, the Electoral College, supper preparation, writing an a.m. post, and more.  But then, this evening as I put the finishing touches on my morning post, it popped back into my head once again and I took that as a sign that I ought to play it here!

According to SongFacts …

“In 1972, Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, who were good friends from their days at Howard University, recorded an album of duets containing the hit “Where Is The Love”. Five years later, they reunited for this track, which is a much happier tale of a couple falling in love.

This song was not conceived as a duet. It was written by Reggie Lucas and James Mtume, who were members of Flack’s touring band and played on Blue Lights in the Basement. They wrote the song between tours, and during the sessions for the album brought the song to Flack’s producer Joe Ferla, who played it for Flack. Her manager David Franklin also worked with Hathaway, and decided to bring him in and turn the song into a duet. Hathaway suffered from severe bouts of depression, and hadn’t worked with Flack in years. He was hospitalized at the time, and the producers had to get permission from the hospital to fly him out and come to the sessions. Hathaway died in 1979 of an apparent suicide.”

Following Hathaway’s death, Roberta Flack told Jet magazine …

“I tried to reach out to Donny. That’s how we managed to do the song we did last year. I felt this need because I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t save him, I knew he was sick. But I knew when he sat down at that piano and sang for me it was like it was eight or nine years ago because he sang and played his ass off.”

Flack announced that The Closer I Get to You would forever be a dedication to Hathaway, and that all money made from the song would be donated to Hathaway’s widow and two children.  And on that sad note, let’s just listen to the music …

The Closer I Get to You
Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway

The closer I get to you
The more you make me see
By giving me all you got
Your love has captured me

Over and over again
I tried to tell myself that we
Could never be more than friends
And all the while inside I knew it was real
The way you make me feel

Lying here next to you
Time just seems to fly
Needing you more and more
Lets give love a try (oh, oh, oh)

Sweeter than sweeter love grows
And heaven’s there for those
Who fool the tricks of time
With the hearts of love they find true love
In a special way

The closer I get to you
The more you make me see
By giving me all you got
Your love has captured me

Over and over again
I try to tell myself that we
Could never be more than friends
And all the while inside I knew it was real
The way you make me feel

The closer I get to you
The more you make me see
By giving you all I got
Your love has captured me

The closer I get to you
The feeling comes over me (me too)
Pulling closer, sweet as the gravity

to you

  2. I confess never having heard of Danny Hathaway but I was a great fan of Roberta Flack. To hear this (however) made my heart melt and my eyes tear up. That’s a perfect and winning combo, made even more precious by your background tale of the How… Such beauty.

And you have my sympathy re the dishwasher, as ours was on its last leg too and instead of exchanging, the caretakeing (ha ha!!) kept the report of the technician who ‘claimed a replacement’ on a table. I contacted the firm to do the replacement twice since and they still had NO ok by the responsible…. So I wrote yet another mail asking that the person in charge take their finger out of you know where, fully well knowing that he had done absolutely nothing as usual…. Guess what – 3hrs later I had the installment date for a new one – but you have to push and threaten the buggars to do their job…. This is ONE of the few boni of renting your flat, as an owner you have to do everything yourself!

    • In truth, the name Danny Hathaway did not ring any bells for me, either. What a tragic life he led, and how sad the end of it was. I’m glad you liked the song, though!

We rent, too, and pay $1,220 per month. The rent has never been late in 22 years, yet lately when we need something repaired, it’s like pulling teeth. The maintenance dudes, Mark & Eddie, are great, but it’s the b*tch at the office who doesn’t give them work orders until we’ve called at least three times! Like you, several times I have contacted the ownership and then the work got done, but WHY should it have to be this way? They threaten us with eviction if there is some clutter on our patio, or if our car stickers expire, but they don’t do a #$%& thing! Sigh. I’d almost rather own and be responsible for it all myself … at least I know it would get done!

      • You made me laugh – I’m DEFINITELY DONE with owning. Over the past 21years we owned 3 houses in 3 countries and the last one, in France, just killed my taste for ownership for good. We were lied to and cheated on by the vendors in every possible way, had repairs to make in the first two years in the magnitude of 250k€ and of course all the ‘year by year’ renovations, replacements, end of their life cycles etc… And now we can’t even sell tks to C19! The lesson I learnt was that I’d prefer to shovel an insane amount of money per month (yours sounds like a gift horse to me, although I don’t know where you live and how large the appt is) but can call and put in my complaint. It’s funny, we have a great caretaker who’s willing to get stuff done but the bigger thingies like dishwasher or faucets etc must be approved by a guy of the real estate admin and HE most certainly wasn’t nearby when the word WORK was invented and distributed. He’s forever forgetting EVERYTHING, he’s lazy, looks down his nose, he likes to play with the biggies, drinking coffee with them and forgetting rendez-vous (happened twice with us….) but when I read him the law he promised to do something…. Promised! It took ANOTHER mail, always polite even if I had to hiss through my teeth, but in the end we managed to get a delivery date within 3 days. ouff…

    • Ha ha … yes, I suppose I could start using it as storage for some of the crap residing on my kitchen table! Grrrrrrrrrrr. We pay $1,220 in rent every month, and they can’t be bothered to fix a damn thing! Glad you liked the song, though!

  3. Friends first, then lovers. A prescription for success.
Too often when we think we fall in love, we bypass the things we do not want to see, but they always rear their heads. The rose-coloured glasses always come off.
Friendship is deeper, I think. And if you let it become love, it grows much bustier, with real flowers. Nice choice, Jill.
