I have no idea why, but I have had this song in my head for two days now … I don’t know most of the lyrics, only “… but that was yesterday, and yesterday’s gone …” And I have been singing, humming, whistling that tune for two full days! I had no idea who, or what, but went on a search to find out. And I found out … it was Chad (Stuart) and Jeremy (Clyde), aka Chad & Jeremy, a British musical duo from the 1960s.
This was Chad & Jeremy’s first and only hit song in the UK in 1963, and in the U.S. the following year. Chad Stuart wrote the song, and shares the writing credit with Wendy Kidd, the manager of a band Stuart belonged to at the time of the song’s writing.
Unlike the rock-music sounds of their peers at the time, Chad & Jeremy performed in a soft, folk-inflected style that is characterised by hushed and whispered vocals. The duo had a string of hits in the United States, including Willow Weep for Me (produced by Shel Talmy), Before and After, and their biggest hit, A Summer Song (produced by Shel Talmy). However, it seems that this was one duo doomed to failure in their native land, as the Brits seemed to largely disregard them, and this one was the only one to chart in the UK at #37 … although in Canada and the U.S. they did considerably better. After some commercial failures and divergent personal ambitions, Chad & Jeremy disbanded in 1968.
Yesterday’s Gone
Chad & Jeremy
I loved you all the summer through
I thought I’d found my dream in you
For me you were the one
But that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone
We walked together hand in hand
‘Cross miles and miles of golden sand
But now it’s over and done
‘Cause that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone
We had such happiness together
I can’t believe it’s gone forever
Wait ’til summer comes again
I hope that you’ll remember when
Our love had just begun
I loved you yesterday and yesterday’s gone
We had such happiness together
I can’t believe it’s gone forever
Wait ’til summer comes again
I hope that you’ll remember when
Our love had just begun
I loved you yesterday and yesterday’s goneYesterday’s gone
Yesterday’s gone
Yesterday’s gone

When you mentioned that their song had circulated in your head for two days, I’d wondered if you’d perhaps heard of Chad’s passing and put things together. It happened for me, but stayed only the day, as it was Christmas when I heard, and other things pushed the song out of mind. I remember them mostly because an older sister was excited when they were on American Bandstand. Weren’t really my cuppa, you know? Cheers

No, at that time, I hadn’t heard about Chad’s death. Heartbreaking! Like so many before him. 😥 I did like them, but was caught up in Motown at that time, so they faded to the back of my head.

Thanks, Jill. I’m doing well. As they say, I’m in good shape for the shape I’m in. We’re waiting until next month when they’re supposed to get a vaccine here. I’m 79 so should get it fairly soon. Because of redevelopment, they’re going to arrange for us to move until a new apartment building is going to be built and finished for us on this lot in a couple of years. I told my lawyer I don’t think this is the time we should move until we get the vaccine and he passed it along for me. I can’t get up and down all these stairs for meetings. 🙂 — Suzanne

I’m glad you’re doing pretty good … for the shape you’re in 😉 I’m with you … this seems a terrible time to be moving! Do they not have elevators so that you could attend the meetings? How do you get out to go shopping of for doctor’s appointments? Hang in, my friend!

No elevators and there are 43 steps. I have a trick knee and the doctor told me not to use the steps. The new building is supposed to have elevators which will be great. I have a caregiver who does my errands, shopping, and cleaning. I gave my regular housecleaner paid leave until after the pandemic. My caregiver was employed as my late husband’s caregiver and stayed on after his death several years ago. I hope our move won’t be too soon. I have a doctor who comes in an emergency. We have to call the ambulance if I need to go to the hospital which I hope I won’t have to soon. —- Suzanne

Heck, I find lately that I have trouble climbing the 15 steps in our house … I try to consolidate trips so I only have to do it a few times a day. Seems like only yesterday that I could bounce up and down those stairs with energy to spare. No, stay out of the hospital, my friend … there are sick people there spreading germs, y’know!

Ah, summer loves, great while they lasted, but each one of them fizzled out, at least for me.

I can’t recall ever having a summer love, but I was probably too busy! Then I got married at 19, so that ended that.

Super song, Jill. I was surprised to learn that they were not popular in the UK.

Glad you liked it, John! Yes, I was surprised too, especially since they hailed from the UK. But, there have been artists/bands here that were much more popular in the UK than here in the U.S.

Jill, Chad and Jeremy are a harmonic blast from the past. They remind me of Peter and Gordon who also around that time. Yesterday, I was listening to a Linda Rondstadt CD called “Duets” and a number of the songs were produced by Peter Asher, who went into that side of the business after his duo broke up. Keith

I racked my brain last night trying to think of Peter and Gordon, but kept drawing a blank! Also, another reader told me that Chad Stuart died last week! Had I known, I would have mentioned it, and perhaps made this a tribute instead of an average music post.

Blimey, there’s one from the vaults! As you say, they were more popular over there than they were here, though they did reform a couple of times and have toured a fair bit. Peter and Gordon were the much bigger ‘duo with a guy in specs’ act here. Did you know Chad Stuart died last week?

YES! Peter and Gordon! THAT’S the duo I was trying to think of, and the name just wouldn’t come to me! (Old age, memory loss, etc.) No, I did not know Chad Stuart died last week, else I would surely have made note of it on this post. How sad!

P&G were much bigger here, and had a massive #1 hit with World Without Love, which I think made #1 there too. They had several other big hits too. Peter’s sisters, Claire and Jane, are actresses, the latter having once been Paul McCartney’s girlfriend. He has recently begun touring in a new duo called Peter and Jeremy – guess who the Jeremy is!

Oh yes, I love “World Without Love” and played it a year or so ago here … maybe time for a redux. Thank you for both the history and the current updates! I had no idea! Um … lemme think a minute … could it be Jeremy Clyde, formerly of Chad & Jeremy??? ♫

Surely worth a redux, I think.
Yes, however did you guess? 😂

Happens that I thought it was worth a redux, too, plus I’m exhausted with 100 things to do, so a redux seemed an excellent idea! Today at 11:00 a.m. my time, 4:00 p.m. your time!
Gee, I dunno … just smart, I guess? 😊
