I only started doing these music posts back in 2018, but already every song I think of to play, I have already played. I do quite a few ‘redux-es’, but I really like doing something new, or at least something I haven’t played here before. Tonight, a song was going through my head, but nope … already played that. However, that led to another that I haven’t played!
If a song’s staying power can be judged by the number of covers, then this one is here to stay! First recorded by R&B group Ruby & the Romantics in early December 1962, Our Day Will Come hit #1 in the U.S., #19 in Canada, and #38 in the UK.
The song’s composers, Mort Garson and Bob Hilliard, were hoping to place Our Day Will Come with an established easy listening act and only agreed to let the new R&B group Ruby & the Romantics record the song after Kapp Records’ A&R director Al Stanton promised that, if the Ruby & the Romantics’ single failed, Kapp would record the song with Jack Jones.
Dionne Warwick recorded the original demo of the song for songwriter Bob Hilliard and she told him how much she liked it. Dionne recalls …
“It was written during that period of time when I met Bacharach and David. Bob Hilliard wrote the song also and he said: ‘I’ve got a good little song here and there’s a new group called ‘Ruby and the Romantics’ and will you do the demonstration record?’ I said: ‘Of course. I’d love to. And I did. And I told him then that it was a really pretty song.”
In 1975, Frankie Valli recorded the song featuring Patti Austin on accompanying vocals. Valli’s version reached #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and spent two weeks at #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Internationally, it also reached #30 in Canada, but did not chart in the UK.
I count no less than 77 cover versions of this song, including ones by Bobby Darin, Brenda Lee, Percy Faith, Pat Boone, Trini Lopez, the Lennon Sisters, Doris Day, the Supremes, Cher, James Brown, the Lettermen … whew, the list is exhaustive! For tonight, however, I offer, for your dining listening pleasure, both the Ruby and the Romantics and the Frankie Valli versions.
Our Day Will Come
Ruby and the Romantics/Frankie Valli
Our day will come (our day will come)
And we’ll have everything
We’ll share the joy (we’ll share the joy)
Falling in love can bring
No one can tell me that I’m too young to know (young to know)
I love you so (love you so)
And you love me
Our day will come (our day will come)
If we just wait a while
No tears for us (no tears for us)
Think love and wear a smile
Our dreams have magic because we’ll always stay in love this way
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our dreams have magic because we’ll always stay in love this way
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our day will come (our day will come, our day will come)
Our day will come

I always thought of this as a schmaltzy song, probably as most of the 60s versions I heard were by schmaltzy artists, but I rather like the original recording. Did you know Amy Winehouse recorded it? I always thought she was overrated but her version is fairly passable 😉

Heh heh … I was almost certain this one would be a bit too ‘schmaltzy’ for you! Yes, I learned last night as I was researching for this post that Amy Winehouse had also covered it, but simply didn’t have time nor energy to listen to another version, as it was nigh on 4:00 a.m. I’m not a huge fan of hers, but she has done a few that I like.

I’m getting predictable! I wasn’t a fan of Amy Winehouse either. Never liked her voice.

Yay! I’m always happy when you like the song I play! Like you, I like Ruby’s version best, likely because I’ve heard it far more, but Frankie didn’t do a bad job, either. My day is a good one, albeit c-c-cold! Send me some of your warm air from down there! Keep well and have a great weekend! Oh, by the way, have you gotten all your appliances repaired or replaced now? ❤

lol…. NO, unfortunately… Still don’t have a new hot water heater. We have an HOA. Have to present paperwork from the electrician and plumber. Then it goes before the board for approval. Getting a Tankless Hot Water Heater that mounts on the wall. Trying to free up some space. Got three estimates. Waiting on Board Approval now.
Hasn’t been especially warm here …lately. High 40’s at night. 60’s during the day. Although yesterday… it was in the low 70’s! Will send you some warm air…. along with some buckets of bright sunshine! ☀️
BTW. … I do really like Frankie Valle and the 4 Seasons! Just favored Ruby and the Romantic’s version …on this one!
Hope you’re having a good weekend, too! 💙

What a nightmare! The hot water heater and furnace are the two things I absolutely would not tolerate them mucking around with! That’s crazy!
Heh heh … 60s at this point would be tropical! Our highs next week are only supposed to be in the teens, and they’ve only been in the 20s this week.
Yep, my weekend is peaceful and since I don’t have to do any of the cooking on weekends, I’m actually getting some blogging work done! ❤

This was a song of hope for all those high schoolers whose parents were opposed to whoever the kid was going out with on a regular basis. Good one, Jill.

Indeed so, and also for couples separated by war or distance. Glad you liked it!
