I’m taking you back to 1967 tonight … 54 years … wow … where have those years gone? Few people will sit up and take notice when you say the name, Brenton Wood, but he is the singer of this song that I have never forgotten, never stopped singing at least once a week. This song is one of only two hits Brenton Wood had, the other being Oogum Boogum Song, which frankly even I do not recall.
It was released in 1967 on the album Oogum Boogum. It was written by Wood (under his real name, Alfred Smith), Joe Hooven and Jerry Winn. A quick and dirty search reveals almost no information about the origins of this song. Brenton Woods inspiration, it is said, was the late Sam Cooke.
Gimme Little Sign
Brenton Wood
If you do want me, gimme little sugar
If you don’t want me, don’t lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I’m feeling blue and I want you
There’s just one thing that you should do
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
Oh yeah
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
All right
If you do want me, gimme little sweet talk
If you don’t want me, don’t lead me on girl
But if you need me, show me that you love me
And when I’m feeling down, wearing a frown
You be there when I look around
Just gimme some kind of sign girl
Oh my baby
To show that you’re mine girl
Oh yeah
Songwriters: Alfred J. Smith / Jerry Winn / Joseph Davis Hooven

I’m glad! It’s got a toe-tapping rhythm, doesn’t it?

While listening to the song, I imagine strolling through the streets of a quiet city, in the summer with cone of ice cream in my hand.;-) A wonderful song for calming down. Thank you for sharing, Jill!

I remember this one, I rather liked it at the time. I just looked it up – it got to #8 here. I haven’t heard, or heard of, his other song, though.

Nor have I heard of his other one! Glad you liked it a bit anyway! Have a great week, my friend!

Good choice, Jill. I remember feeling this way with a girl who was either slumming when she spent time with me, or was playing hard to get. Didn’t matter to me. I wasn’t into playing games. She did not last long.
I remember The Oogum Boogum Song, now that I have heard it again on YouTube. But the memory you gave me was Roy Orbison’s first recording, Ooby Dooby, and if you watch this video https://youtu.be/3TSktJeimjE you might be very surprised at the people he has on stage with him. I only knew a few, I was never into videos so have no idea who these people are, but the few I recognize, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits, tell me there must be a lot of superstars up there with them.
Speaking of Roy Orbison, have you ever played anything by him? Most of his music predated the Beatles, so you may not have known him much, but he had some great hits back then, not just Oh, Pretty Woman, and then another string in the 80s I think, solo, or with the Travelling Wilburys. A great talent who is sorely missed.

Your memory is far better than mine! When I read “Oogum Boogum Song”, my mind drew a blank. Sigh. So much music, so little space in the memory banks, so little time.

Uh-oh … I hope you’re not going to sue me for the price of new carpeting! That said, I’m happy this set your toes to tapping … it’s good for the circulation, not to mention the mood.
