I think most of us breathed a big sigh of relief yesterday afternoon when the verdict in the Derek Chauvin case was announced and Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts. Some said the verdict was ‘justice for George Floyd’. But, as our friend Brosephus reminds us, there is a difference between accountability and justice. Yesterday’s verdict was accountability, holding a former police officer accountable for his actions. We’re still a long way from justice for all in this country.
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

That was the first order of business for we the people of the United States when the country was founded. Yes, there needs to be a lot more accountability before it starts to look like justice for some people.

That’s for sure. My hope is that this will set a precedent that will be followed in future cases, such as the cop who shot Daunte Wright, or the one who shot that 13-year-old girl in Columbus. We need to show them that they aren’t the judge, jury and executioner. Once a few are sitting in prisons, perhaps others will think twice before drawing their gun. Sigh.
