♫ Georgy Girl ♫

A few days ago one of my readers asked if I remembered The Seekers.  Of course I did, and I determined to play a song by them soon.  Now, turns out that I only recall two songs by The Seekers:  I’ll Never Find Another You and Georgy Girl.  Well, the first one has somewhat been intermittently stuck in my mind since the mention of The Seekers (I do wish I could remember who mentioned it, but these days I’m lucky to remember … um … what was I saying?).  But, after much thought (a full two minutes), I decided Georgy Girl is the more upbeat of the two, and we damn sure need something upbeat today!  So, Georgy Girl it is, but stay tuned for the other one in the next few days!

This song was used as the title song for the 1966 film of the same title. Tom Springfield, who had written the aforementioned I’ll Never Find Another You, composed the music and Jim Dale supplied the lyrics. The song is heard at both the beginning and end of the film, with markedly different lyrics (and with different lyrics again from those in the commercially released version). It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The song became a hit in late 1966 and early 1967, reaching #1 in Australia and #3 in the United Kingdom. In the United States, it was the Seekers’ highest charting single, reaching #1 on the Cash Box Top 100. Georgy Girl reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100; I’m a Believer by The Monkees, kept the song from number one. The song’s US success prompted the Seekers’ British album Come the Day to be retitled Georgy Girl for its American release.

Other than that, I don’t find much background trivia about the song, so …

Georgy Girl
The Seekers

Hey there, Georgy girl
Swinging down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there inside you
Hey there, Georgy girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don’t try or is it the clothes you wear?

You’re always window shopping but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly a little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There’s another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there’d be
The world would see a new Georgy girl

Hey there, Georgy girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can’t always run away
Don’t be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself
It’s time for jumping down from the shelf a little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There’s another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there’d be
The world would see a new Georgy girl

Wake up, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Come on, Georgy girl
(Hey there, Georgy girl)
Wake up, Georgy girl

  1. I’m the guilty party – it was in our chat after you posted Dusty Springfield, whose brother wrote and produced The Seekers, and directed you to the wonderful Carnival Is Over. I may not have mentioned, however, that I didn’t like any of their records 😉

    • AHA!!! I should have been able to remember, but … I swear I think I’m getting Alzheimer’s … I cannot remember anything anymore! But yes, now I recall that conversation. And no, you didn’t mention that you didn’t like any of their music! I probably still would have played this one anyway. Guess I’ll have to dig up some more Elton soon, eh?

      • You might also find The Seekers on the list I sent you a few months ago. If they aren’t there, they should have been, lol. G.G. was a happy song, which us why it did so well, but the movie was a flop in Canada. It left Winnipeg after about a week run, or was it a weak run. Anyways, love the Seekers, and the Searchers too!

        • Actually, no … The Seekers weren’t on that list, but … you had mentioned them in the email you sent prior to sending the list. I never saw the movie, but it doesn’t sound like anything I would enjoy anyway.
