I look at the news these days, and there are no headlines screaming at me, no nefarious tweets by the former guy that send me straight into fight mode, but still … it takes only about 5 minutes of trolling the news to set my teeth on edge. Too many things just aren’t right in this country. And so … sigh … it’s time for me to share a few snarky snippets from the aged, ancient mind.
WHY NOT???
At least five members of the United States military have been charged for participating in the attack on the Capitol on January 6th, and yet not a single one has been relieved of their duty in the military. In other words … to put it quite bluntly … the very people who attempted to overthrow our government are still the ones we are relying on to defend us against all enemies, foreign and domestic. These five ARE the enemy domestic, for Pete’s Sake!!!
One of the five is Major Christopher Warnagiris, a Marine Corps officer who was arrested last week and accused of leading rioters in through the east doors of the Capitol Rotunda. He has been charged with five counts, including assaulting and obstructing police during a civil disorder and obstructing an official proceeding of Congress. Military officials say they are waiting for the legal proceedings by the Department of Justice before making any ‘administrative decisions.’ BULLSHIT. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my life in the hands of a guy who assaulted a police officer and was willing to overthrow the government for personal gain just a few short months ago! A guy who knowingly attacked a federal building, attempted to throw out my vote and yours, and had accepted that there was a noose hung outside the building waiting for the vice president of the country!
There used to be such a thing called a ‘court martial’ for people like Warnagiris and the other four members of the military who threw their loyalty out the window on January 6th.
And speaking of January 6th …
If a bomb goes off somewhere and I was there just 30 minutes earlier, I fully expect to be questioned about why I was there, what I saw, etc. If I refuse, that would be a sure sign that I had something to do with that bomb, that I at least knew of it or saw something suspicious, and I would be taken ‘downtown for questioning’. Rightly so. Refusal to answer questions is a sure sign of some level of guilt. So … when certain Republican members of Congress, most notably for the purpose of this conversation, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, want to quash an investigation into the events of January 6th, warning bells immediately start going off in my head!
What did they do? What did they know? Who did they speak to ahead of the attack? How were they involved? Did they encourage or incite the horrific attack on Congress and the Capitol? Surely they have something to hide, else they would not be working so fast and furiously to bury any investigation. They remind me of a two-year-old holding the forbidden cookies behind his back, saying “Wh-wha-what c-c-cookies???”
Funny, too, that when the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked in 2012, the Republicans in Congress were the first to demand an investigation, the first to point the fingers at then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (who, it was proven multiple times, was not at fault), but now, an attack on home soil, and they are … “Meh, it was nuthin’.” The word ‘HYPOCRITE’ comes to mind often when I hear the word ‘Republican’, or the names of Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, Matt Gaetz, Margie Green, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Lauren Boebert, Josh Hawley and others. Gee, I wonder why. Yes, they are all a lot of hypocrites and we must keep the pressure on to investigate the events and conversations that led up to the violent attacks on Congress that black, bleak day. Our friend Keith has written to a few Republican Senators and posted his letter on his blog with an invitation for any who wish to alter and use it to do so freely. I encourage you to make your voices heard on this critical issue. If there is no price to pay for those who instigated or played a role in the insurrection, it is almost guaranteed to happen again.
Stupid just keeps on getting stupider
Ol’ Marge Greene, the freshman representative from Georgia who is a QAnon supporter, has said & done so many really stupid things that all her committee assignments were taken from her within a month of her taking her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Her latest … really ought to be grounds for expulsion from Congress.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in an abundance of caution, made the decision to continue the mask mandate on the House floor. It does not mean that lawmakers must wear a mask in their respective offices, or in the supermarket, only on the floor of the House of Representatives, and her reason is that some of the lawmakers are not yet fully vaccinated. Makes sense, yes? But … here’s what ol’ Marge had to say about it …
“This woman [Pelosi] is mentally ill. You know, we can look back in a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second-class citizens — so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany and this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about.”
Say WHAT??? There is absolutely no comparison between a mask mandate for the safety of all, and the Holocaust! It’s an abomination to even make such a statement! Please, Congress, expel this … person … from the halls of your noble edifice! Send her back to Georgia and let her resume her life as a fitness instructor whereby she won’t be subjected to wearing a mask! She is not lawmaker material, doesn’t even appear to have a functional brain!

Additional snippet: news that some Secret Service agents were all in for trump, supported the insurrection, which led to a change giving Biden agents he’d worked with as VP. But one of these characters is still employed by Secret Service. Why???!!!

Excellent addition, Annie! Yes … the big question is … WHY????

Jill, thanks for the link to my letter. I sent it to about fifteen senators. Many things trouble me, but keeping it simple. What if the insurrectionists found the white haired vice president? The fragile ego of the former president who cannot stand losing caused him to place a a target on Pence’s back as well as others. As his niece Mary said so well, her uncle will burn it all down to avoid saying he lost the election. As for the other sycophants you mention above, when someone covers for a lie, what does that make them? Keith

Jill, this article revisits one in 2012 about the concerns over the Republican Party long before the former president and QAnon followers got elected. It was written by a moderate right and moderate left author and was dismissed by people in the party. The sad truth is they were dead on accurate as they predicted a deeper fall into the chasm.

WOW, Keith! That is so spot on! I guess we all just ignored it, pooh-poohed it as being fatalistic or overly dramatic. But yes, obviously the GOP were on the path even 9 years ago … Trump just came along and fit the bill. Right place at the right time. What lies ahead frightens me. Thanks for sharing this … very enlightening and unnerving, too.

Jill, when people ignore the facts, they do tend to bite you in the behind. The Republicans have reaped what they sowed. What is sad and scary is the mainstream nature of some of zealots in the party. Truth be damned. Keith

Indeed, they have and should reap what they’ve sown, but what frightens me is that they are willing to play dirty pool to remain in power, even after proving they don’t deserve to be in positions of leadership. And yes, it is also scary that they have some downright lunatics in the party today who don’t seem to have the sense of a goose!

I remember reading that, back in 2012. I thought it was an excellent analysis, and unusual of Norm Ornstein to be so directly critical of Republicans. There may have been an NPR report on that (interviewing Ornstein).
Things have only gotten worse.

The article was spot on, and yes, things have only gotten worse. What is concerning is how much worse they may still get.

My pleasure, Keith! I’m hoping many take you up on your offer to share the letter, as I have. I’ve sent it to Rob Portman so far and am planning to send it to others tomorrow (internet down for a day-and-a-half has put me behind on everything). I share your concerns, and would add that if, as I hope, Joe Biden wins again in 2024, there will be an even more blatant attempt to overturn the election, perhaps a much more violent one. We simply cannot let the guilty go unpunished. When someone covers for a lie, then they, too, are a liar. Period.

Couldn’t agree more about the five members of the military. They should be dishonorably discharged just for participating in the insurrection, regardless of the specific charges they will be tried for.

Absolutely!!! There was a time when they would have been dishonourably discharged, but … not today. Sigh.
