Tonight I am in the mood for me some Lionel and thus, I shall play me some Lionel! My friend Herb tells me that I should play more contemporary music, ditch the “old guys” as he calls them, and play the sort of dark, depressing music that he most likes. However, this is my bloomin’ blog and I play what I like, and tonight what I like is some Lionel! I just spent 30 minutes finding one that I really like and haven’t yet played here.
This song is a track from Lionel Richie’s 1986 album Dancing on the Ceiling featuring Marva King on backing vocals. The song was written by Richie along with Greg Phillinganes and Cynthia Weil. Love Will Conquer All was Richie’s tenth number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. Overall, the song was #9 in the U.S., #19 in Canada, and #45 in the UK.
The video is a road trip by Richie from San Francisco to Los Angeles through the rain and night to catch a woman who is concurrently leaving a note for him, refusing to answer his calls, and planning to leave.
I don’t have much background trivia for this song, nor do I have the energy tonight to search for it, so you’ll just have to sit back, dim the lights, and listen …
Love Will Conquer All
Lionel Richie
Here we are
Out here me and you
Reaching out each other
Is all that we can do
Here we stand
Trying not to fall
There’s no need to worry
Love will conquer all
Do you really want to know
Just how long love will last
Will all of the bad times pass
How can we make things right
Ooh and why
Why is the world so unkind,
We surely can find peace of mind
If we only see the light, can’t we see that
Here we are
Out here me and you
Reaching out each other
Is all that we can do
Ooh here we stand
Trying not to fall
There’s no need to worry
Love will conquer all
Can somebody tell me why
Why do our dreams go wrong
Why can’t we all belong
Ooh, where do we start
Oh and tell me when
When will we ever learn
There’s nowhere else we can turn
The truth is in our hearts, here we are together
Sometimes the road gets hard to travel
Sometimes the pains too much to bear
Sometimes when life seems to unravel
That’s the time oh – to say
We’re gonna make it anyway
Can’t we see that
Here we are
Out here me and you
Reaching out each other
Is all that we can do
Here we stand
Trying not to fall
There’s no need to worry
Love will conquer all

Oh I do love me some LR in the morning, great start! I know he was lead singer in the Commodores where he was first known. He had that wonderful Smokey Robinson vibe, an innocence and sincerity about him. Speaking of which, I’d like to share:
Much ❤

Whilst I agree with everyone that it’s your blog, your choice, I also agree with Clive, I’ve never heard it before and can see why it didn’t fare so well over here. Fairly lacklustre. an lacking the strength of many of his songs.

I don’t remember ever hearing this before. Sorry, but it’s not my thing anyway!

Fingers crossed. A bit of Led Zeppelin would be good…

Welllllllll … I … um … er … no can do, Amigo! Lo siento mucho, pero … I simply don’t find Led Z to my liking! 🤧

It was worth a try. Some of their songs are quieter, though – give Thank You a listen. It’s one of the most beautiful love songs I know.

Will do! Thanks! I think back in the day when my kids were teenagers I had a philosophy that if they liked it, I definitely wouldn’t! That’s how I came to never listen to Led Zeppelin and some others.

I used the same rule of thumb, probably as revenge for my two not liking my musical choices! In my case, I was the one who liked Led Zep when no one else in the house did 😉

Oh that is funny! Both of my teens loved Led Zep, so of course I never listened to him. But, I was a bit earlier than you in having teens, I think, so times changed, tastes changed. Some music has an expiry date, and few are destined to last forever.

Some last longer than others, though. We both like a lot of music from the Sixties, but I wonder how much of today’s will still be listened to in fifty years time?

Good point! There are still a few songs from my parents’ day that are well-liked today, but not played widely on the radio. I suppose at some point even The Beatles will fade into the haze of history.

I guess so, but I hope not!

I hope not, too … they were … oh, what’s that word I’m looking for??? They carved the path for future generations of music … I know there’s a word for that, but my tired old brain just cannot seem to pull it up.
