Just Two Short Bits of Snarky

Yes, yes … Filosofa is still snarking and ranting … there is just so much wrong in this world, every bit of which could be so easily fixed with just the three ‘C’s – common sense, compassion, cooperation.  I did have more snippets than just these two short ones, but … I’m out of time, so I shall save them for later or tomorrow!  Gives you something to look forward to, eh?

Cosa Nostra rides again?

William Braddock is a Republican candidate from Florida who is hoping to be elected to fill the seat currently held by Democrat Charlie Crist, who is resigning to run for governor to (hopefully) replace the ignoble Ron DeSantis next year.  William Braddock is short on name recognition, but one thing he has plenty of is audacity.

Also running in that same GOP primary race is Anna Paulina Luna, an Air Force veteran who went on to become a conservative activist and won a crowded GOP primary in the state’s 13th Congressional District last year but lost the general election to Crist.

Apparently, Mr. Braddock has a unique plan for winning the Republican nomination next fall … kill off Ms. Luna!  Yes, you heard me right!  During a 30-minute call with a conservative activist, Braddock is heard saying the following …

“I really don’t want to have to end anybody’s life for the good of the people of the United States of America. That will break my heart. But if it needs to be done, it needs to be done. Luna is a f—ing speed bump in the road. She’s a dead squirrel you run over every day when you leave the neighborhood.”

And later in the conversation …

“I have access to a hit squad, too, Ukrainians and Russians. Don’t get caught out in public supporting Luna. … Luna’s gonna go down and I hope it’s by herself.”

And still more …

“My polling people are going to charge me $20,000 to do a poll right before the primary. And if the poll says Luna’s gonna win, she’s gonna be gone. She’s gonna disappear.  For the good of our country, we have to sacrifice the few. … For the better or the good of the majority of the people, we’ve got to sacrifice the few.”

My jaw dropped when I read this.  WHO THE HELL talks like that and hopes to win a seat to the U.S. Congress???  Does he fancy himself Don Corleone?  If so, he’s watched The Godfather a few too many times!  Even the mob don’t talk like that, especially in a phone call where they may be recorded!

This jackass belongs either in a mental institution or a prison cell, but definitely NOT in the U.S. House of Representatives!  Until reading this, I didn’t think it was possible to sink any lower than the likes of Margie Greene and Matt Gaetz, but obviously I was wrong!

DESTROY THE DAMN GUNS!!!!!!!!!!!

We’ve got another mass shooting here in the U.S., this time in Chicago.  I could give you the details, but you likely already know them, and … if you don’t, you can just Google “latest mass shooting”.  But, I will tell you that four human beings, people minding their own business, people who were husbands, wives, parents … are now dead, thanks to the gun culture in the not-so-United States.  Yesterday, I decided to check the local news for my own area, Cincinnati, Ohio.  I don’t often read the local news, but about once a week I try to catch up.

A few days ago, in a suburb a few miles from where I live, a little 6-year-old boy left his bicycle in a neighbor’s yard.  When he went back to retrieve it a while later, the neighbor shot him.  The little boy will be okay, the shot went straight through his arm, but WHO THE HELL SHOOTS A KID for nothing more than leaving his bike in their yard?????????

And on Sunday night, in another subdivision that is just a few miles from where I live, two children – a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old – were shot, as well as two teenagers.  Both of the younger children, last I heard, were in critical condition, while the teens suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  Again, the details are irrelevant, but what is relevant is that 4 young lives were nearly snuffed out, two may yet die, and FOR WHAT????

DESTROY THE DAMN GUNS, PEOPLE!!!  I’M SICK AND DAMN TIRED OF PEOPLE DYING BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE THINK THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO OWN A KILLING MACHINE.  THEY DON’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Funny that the guys on the right claim to be so anti-Communist, and yet this Braddock guy sounds exactly like a Communist dictator, with his talk of how a few lives might need to be sacrificed for the good of the majority. Might have to break a few eggs to make that Patriot omelet, eh?

  2. Mr Braddock sounds like a man who should be in prison. Russian hit squads!! And I just can’t fathom the gun culture in your country. We have knife crime here in the UK and that’s bad enough.

    • Believe me, my friend, I cannot fathom the gun culture in this nation either. And instead of dying down, it is getting worse. Whereas people used to clamor for the right to own a pistol or a rifle, now they demand that they be allowed to own assault weapons that can kill literally hundreds within a minute or two. As for Mr. Braddock … yes, prison or a room with padded walls … he certainly doesn’t belong in society and DEFINITELY not in Congress!!! Sigh.

        • Well, I don’t like to think it’s the majority of people, but … if you consider that there are more guns in the hands of civilians in this country than there are civilians … it must be the majority! Personally, I’d love to see every single gun confiscated and put on one of Elon Musk’s spaceships and dumped way out in space, never to return to earth. And I know others that share my sentiments. But … gun owners are adamant to the point of being insane about protecting their gun rights. Some time ago, I wrote of a family who, when given the choice between giving up their guns, or having their children removed from their home and placed in foster care … put their guns ahead of the children and the children were taken from them. That, my friend, is the extent to which the gun culture has taken hold of far too many in this country. The mass shootings don’t faze them, the extremely high suicide rate doesn’t bother them one whit, and even if one of them becomes the victim of gun violence, they STILL support the right of everyone to own guns. Lots of guns. At one time, there was a proposal to make it a law that every household must own at least one firearm! Fortunately, that one didn’t fly, for I’d have to be a lawbreaker. I denied my brother-in-law to enter my home one time, for he had a gun on his person! Sigh.

I’ve got to be honest Jill, I feel sorry for you living there. Must be awful at times. Nobody seems to bat an eyelid when a dozen people get shot by some lunatic. It soon becomes yesterday’s news.

            • Sigh. There is a lot of good here, but more and more the bad is winning the game, stomping on the good (or shooting it). Thanks, Vinny … if I had the wherewithal, I would leave this country today. But, sadly I don’t, and … there is one part of me that says somebody has to stay and fight the good fight … not that I make much difference, but I try hard to wake people up, get them to listen and think just for a minute. You’re right … so many have become inured to the violence, not only the gun culture, but police killing unarmed Black men, laws being made taking away women’s rights, our right to vote, and more. Sigh.

                • Oh yes, the land of the free … free to carry guns, free to shoot people in grocery stores, churches, movie theaters, and on the streets. Free to own an arsenal. But, not free to be safe outside your own home. We had 11 mass shootings just this weekend that killed 8 and injured 49. We’ve had 293 mass shootings, defined by 4 or more people shot, this year so far. And the Republicans in Congress refuse to pass ANY form of gun laws that might make it a bit safer. In truth, with so many guns in the hands of civilians, there’s no way to actually enforce gun laws anyway! Sigh. Oh yes, Trump & Co were a huge problem, but really only brought some of the nutcases out of the woodwork and gave them permission to act on their baser instincts. Getting those who slithered out of the rocks to go back under the rocks now may be next to impossible.

Turns out the U.S. is, as of 2020 at least, the #1 manufacturer of guns, producing approximately 9 trillion guns per year. Next in rank is Russia, producing approximately 3 trillion guns per year. Keep in mind that this is guns both for military and civilian use, and I don’t know how many of each category.

Well, there’s the thing. If you buy a gun from a gun shop, they will do a background check to see such things as a criminal record before they can legally sell you the gun. BUT … you can buy a gun at a gun show and there is NO background check. You can also buy a gun from your neighbor with no license requirement, no record of the sale, and again, no background check. So yeah, you can pretty much buy one from anywhere. Sigh.

                    • 9 trillion?! That is big business! And that’s per year. Some people are making a serious load of cash there. So I suppose the makers of the weapons are quite happy to carry on if the money rolls in. Supply and demand I guess. As for buying a gun it’s just nuts isn’t it. So some crazy man ( or woman but let’s face it, it’s mainly men) can just walk in and buy a gun? And people are ok with that!?

                    • Yep, and the arms industry is not about to see that cash cow disappear, so … they buy members of Congress. They donate, say a few hundred thousand dollars each election cycle to help keep a senator or representative in their seat, and in return, that member of Congress promises not to vote for any sort of gun regulation, not even expanding background checks, or banning assault-type weapons. Last I checked, every member of Congress who was taking donations from the National Rifle Association (NRA) was a Republican. Tell you something?

Yes, it is nuts, my friend. Worse yet, a number of states are passing or have already passed laws that people can carry a gun with them wherever they go WITHOUT having a license to even own that gun! Meaning, you go to the library, you see a gun sticking out of a guy’s belt, and the odds are he’s never passed a background check, has no license to carry a gun, and for all I know he may be a raving lunatic. No, some of us are NOT okay with that at all, and even most gun owners support more restrictive laws, but … not gonna happen until we put tougher controls on political donations. At one time, we had them, and even had a ban on assault weapons, but then there was a Supreme Court Case called Citizens United v Federal Elections Committee, and the Justices ruled that corporations are considered people, too, and may donate almost unlimited amounts to political candidates. This is how the fossil fuel industry has escaped regulations for the last 5 years of so. Sigh. If I were younger, I’d be planning to leave this country forever.

So I could buy a gun and walk around with it on my hip like a gunslinger? Jill you have my sympathies and I’d be terrified to be honest.

                    • That was what I thought, but then a UK friend told me that no, they are not the same, so … I’m still confused about what the parties in your country represent, what their ideologies are. I expected that the Labour Party would be akin to our Democrats, with platforms and policies that help the average person, but again I was told that isn’t the case. Sigh … all so confusing, isn’t it? I’m not terrified, but admittedly when I’m out in public I tend to look closely to see if I see any indication a person is carrying a gun, and if they are, I exit the place of business and report the person to management on my way out.

                    • Yeah the labour party used to be a party for the working man and woman but now it’s more and more centre ground so it gets very confusing. The conservatives seem to have taken all the votes, God knows why!

                    • Similarly here, the Republicans used to be the party of Lincoln who freed the slaves, but now they would sent Black people back into slavery! It is all very confusing. I think we should get rid of political parties and judge people on their own merit! Parties tend to own the people in their party, and not allow for freedom of thought.

                    • I agree. The labour party became new labour when Tony Blair took over. Less left more centre based. Worked for awhile then the Tories took over and they have had a strangle hold ever since.

                    • What do the Tories stand for? Are they right-wing, pro-big-business like our Republican Party? It almost sounds as if both our governments need to go home and let’s start over, build viable governments that work for the people and the environment from the ground up.

There’s nothing I can say about gun culture that you haven’t already said but that one day it could be the family of the shooters that is next caught in the crossfire of two thugs who don’t like to be asked to wear a mask and have no other way to express themselves because learning to read and write was too much effort.

    • Yep, one should be very careful when making threats like that, especially if one is aspiring to higher places! My best guess is that he sunk his own boat … at least I hope so, but here you never know … some people think that sort of talk is a sign of “strength”. I see it as a sign of idiocy and weakness.

No, there isn’t much more to be said about the gun culture here except I Want It STOPPED! And I know it never will be … I’m betting that if the human species survives another 100 years (which seems doubtful) the gun culture will be so bad in this nation that most clothing stores will carry Kevlar vests and that nobody will step outside without wearing one. Sigh.

  5. I find it totally incongruous that Republicans seem to be able to “ignore” the DEATHS of functioning individuals caused by the GUNS they love so much … AND they support the DEATH of functioning adults who may or may not have committed crimes … YET they are adamant about the DEATH of a fetus that has no memory, no experience, no knowledge of the world it has entered.

Like you, I care far more about people’s character, how they treat others, than the colour of their skin, their religion or sexual orientation. Sadly, in this country, I seem to be in the minority.
