♫ Still The One ♫

A few nights ago I played Still the One by Shania Twain, not thinking about the fact there was a song by Orleans with the exact same title, completely different song.  A number of readers commented that while they liked the one by Shania, their preference was this one by Orleans.  Since I aim to please, and since I like this song too, I’m making up for my lack of vision earlier in the week.

This song was written by Johanna Hall and John Hall, and recorded by the soft rock group Orleans on their album Waking and Dreaming, released in 1976.  There are two versions of how the lyrics for this song came about:  Orleans bass player Lance Hoppen recalls that Johanna Hall wrote the lyrics for Still the One after a friend “asked her why somebody couldn’t write a song about staying together, as opposed to breaking up”. Johanna Hall wrote the lyrics on an envelope which she then handed to John Hall who Hoppen says “created the music in about fifteen minutes”. Johanna Hall’s recollection is that the realization that there was a dearth of songs about long-term relationships came to her while she was doing laundry, and that she handed John Hall a napkin on which she’d written the song’s lyric.

During the presidential elections of 2004, George W. Bush tried to use this song as his campaign theme but was immediately ordered to cease. John Hall demanded that his campaign stop using the song and had two different arguments: that Bush’s campaign never obtained permission, and that Hall was a Democrat who never supported Bush nor Republicans whatsoever from the beginning.

Hall did something about it: In 2006, he ran for congress and, helped by campaign appearances by Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne, defeated Republican incumbent Sue Kelly in his district in New York!

Still The One
Orleans

We’ve been together since way back when
Sometimes I never want to see you again
But I want you to know, after all these years
You’re still the one I want whisperin’ in my ear

You’re still the one I want to talk to in bed
Still the one that turns my head
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one

I looked at your face every day
But I never saw it ’til I went away
When winter came, I just wanted to go (Wanted to go)
Deep in the desert, I longed for the snow

You’re still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one that’s my better half
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one

You’re still the one that makes me strong
Still the one I want to take along
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one (Yes, you are)

Changing, our love it comes and goes
Even though we grow, it grows too

You’re still the one that I love to touch
Still the one and I can’t get enough
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one

You’re still the one who can scratch my itch
You’re still the one that I wouldn’t switch
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one

You are still the one that makes me shout
Still the one that I dream about
We’re still having fun, and you’re still the one

You’re still the one
Yeah, still the one
We’re still having fun
And you’re still the one

  1. Jill, good tune with a fun beat. I hated it was used by a network to sell its #1 rated fall line-up as it took away its meaning. It is nor unlike Carly Simon’s “Anticipation” selling Heinz Ketchup. One of my favorite part’s of the song is with the bass singer goes so low, he stands out. Keith
