We often make the mistake of categorizing people by their religion or political affiliation, and I’m as guilty as the next person. But our friend Keith has posted a letter to the editor that appeared in his local paper by a lifelong Republican, that makes so much sense, that shows us not every Republican is willing to follow their leaders off of a steep cliff. It is my hope that there are many more Republicans who feel this way and aren’t afraid to say so! Thank you, Keith, for sharing this!
The following letter by a “lifelong registered Republican voter” appeared in my newspaper’s Letters to the Editors. I agree with what is said by someone who is as disillusioned and concerned as I am about the direction of the Republican party. It was under a banner of “GOP Censorship.”
“I’m a lifelong registered Republican voter disturbed by the GOP’s elitist push for censorship. From the manufactured outrage over Critical Race Theory to tortured justifications for unconstitutional voter suppression legislation, Republican conservatives are showing themselves to be thin-skinned, intolerant and frankly ignorant about the basic ideas of what makes America great.
This reflexive obedience to elite authoritarianism by millions of Christian Republican conservatives didn’t start with the Trump administration. Sadly, it doesn’t look as it will end with it, either. The majority of patriotic Americans must stand vigil against this tide or repression and fear.”
I will leave his name off…

I am also sure there are not all members of the Republican party like the rioters. But in a democratic system, a few fools are enough to bring the whole system to a standstill. ;-( xx Michael

Oh, you are definitely right … they are not all violent haters as were the rioters. But, the fact that they are covering for those rioters, and trying to cover up or whitewash the entire incident makes them, in my book, culpable, at least to an extent, and I am very suspicious of those who are claiming it wasn’t an insurrection, but merely a misunderstanding. xx

Thank you for sharing!!… in the past you have stated about becoming disillusioned and I told you to keep writing and let your voice be heard, you never know who might hear you “The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.” ( Frederick Buechner )… the world today are quick to put a label on someone or ideology and it may not be reality.. 🙂
I am sure that in spite of the illusion the Republican leadership would like to present, not all Republicans think the same (likewise for all other ideologies)… 🙂
Here on the path I try to keep an open mind and the only labels use are on the canned vegetables… 🙂
Until we meet again
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

I do love your way of seeing the world, my friend! I especially like the quote by Frederick Buechner … how very true! We may never know whose life we touched, or even changed with our words. And, I love your final statement about the only labels being the ones on cans of veggies! If only the entire world thought as you do! As always, thanks for weighing in here, Dutch, and thanks many times over for the inspiring Irish saying!

So true … but we’ll need more than just one or even a few.

And….
My late dear dad, a fire fighter of many years used to tell me in sustained very hot weather all it needed would be two leaves or dried out grasses moving together to start a heath fire.

Which, if you think about it, makes perfect sense … friction, extreme heat, lack of moisture … a perfect combination. Just as is the setting in our nation today … the setting for a perfect storm.

I’m afraid so. When one major party sets its cap on courting just one section of the population…

Thanks for the reblog. I will likely be sending a variation of this to select Republican legislators asking for a reply. I may also send it to select others.

Oh good!!!! Let us know if you get any responses from the Republican legislators! Did you see the response David got to his letter from his Member of Parliament? I was impressed by the scope and detail the MP went into in response to David’s concerns. Our members of Congress NEVER give such a thorough answer!

Jill, I just read it. The MP at least sent a detailed letter that does not look like the canned letters I get. Why do I know they are canned? As I have received the same letter or more than one occasion. Keith

Same here … the ones I get sound like they were designed to be a “one size fits all” response, and I have gotten the same one twice as well. David’s MP addressed his concerns one by one — something Portman and Davidson have NEVER bothered to do in a response to my letters.

We all need to write more letters. Let’s send letters to the editor of our local paper!

I fully agree!!! Eventually perhaps we can open some eyes!

I highly encourage this. If we all keep writing to the editors, they will start to see that we are real people, who are extremely annoyed, lol. If we get enough people to do it, I think it might actually do something…Like this letter!

Lolsy, I agree. if you have Republican legislators state or federal, I would encourage you to send a variation of this. They sad part is they know this person is right, but have to walk on egg shells around the former president’s base. Keith
