It’s been a few years since I played this one, and it was brought back to the forefront of my mind when Keith recalled singing it to his children when they were young. Ever since his mention of it, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head, so … let me see if I can plant it in your head instead!
Danny’s Song was written by singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins, as a gift for his brother Danny for the birth of his son, Colin. Although Anne Murray made it famous in 1973, taking the song to #1 in Canada and #7 in the US, this is more associated with Kenny Loggins, and frankly I like the Loggins/Messina version best. However, since I realize that my opinion is not the only one that counts, I offer both, so you can take your pick.
Danny’s Song
Kenny Loggins
People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one
And we’ve just begun
Think I’m gonna have a son
He will be like she and me, as free as a dove
Conceived in love
Sun is gonna shine above
And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
Bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be alright
Seems as though a month ago I was Beta Chi
Never got high
Oh, was a sorry guy
And now I smile and face the girl that shares my name, yeah
Now I’m through with the game
This boy’ll never be the same
And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
Bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be all right
Pisces Virgo rising is a very good sign
Strong and kind
And the little boy is mine
Now I see a family where there once was none
Now we’ve just begun
Yeah we’re gonna fly to the sun
And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
You bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be all right
Love the girl who holds the world in a paper cup
Drink it up
Love her and she’ll bring you luck
And if you find she helps your mind
Buddy, take her home
Yeah, don’t you live alone
Try to earn what lovers own
And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
And everything will bring a chain of love
And in the mornin’ when I rise
You bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything is gonna be alright

Those hippies! Their hair is longer than mine, lol

Ha ha … long hair does not a hippie make, my friend! I have long hair, and while I may have tried being a hippie back in the 60s, I’ve long since outgrown that!

Yeah, I like both. Anne Murray’s is a touch softer. Thanks for both

Yeah, I like both too. Glad you enjoyed it! I wonder if I should prepare to play a funeral dirge next Wednesday?

Jill, many thanks for the shout out. Of course, my version pales in comparison to either recording. I need an audience that cannot walk away. I have written before, the final verse in the next to last paragraph defines my wife. She is the girl who hold the world in a paper cup. Keith

Ha ha … I hear you, my friend! My girls immediately don their headphones and the cats sometimes run under the sofa if I start to sing! I’m only allowed to sing in the kitchen and in the shower! Awwww … what a sweet thing to say about your wife!
