The Media and GOP Revel in Botched Afghan Withdrawal

I’m already sick and damn tired of the media and the radical right blaming President Biden for what is happening in Afghanistan. Their own last two presidents are more culpable than Biden … G.W. Bush made the wrong decision to put boots on the ground there in 2001, and the former guy actually played footsies with the Taliban! Put the blame where it belongs if you must ‘blame’ someone. Our friend Jeff has written a post that precisely reflects my own thoughts. Thanks, Jeff!

On The Fence Voters

The daggers are out – sharpened the past seven months by a media devoid of drama, intrigue, lies, and other wrongdoing they’d grown accustomed to the previous four years. The GOP, eager to pounce, now has some chaos they can hang on President Joe Biden.

Why does it seem that certain people seem to be rooting for failure? Because they are. It’s pretty simple. The media and the GOP have specific reasons for loving every minute of the botched exit from Afghanistan.

We’ve heard, anecdotally, that certain media members haven’t been too happy in recent months. They long for those days when all you had to do was head to Twitter early in the morning to find out what crazy mutterings the disgraced former president was typing into his phone. Ah, there’s my story for today! Oh wait, it’s mid-afternoon, and now he’s gone completely off the rails!

Those were…

  2. Dont worry, even though its a sad situation. You have saved the lives of many soldiers, and if the Europeans are not willing to stand by side the USA, you should not blame yourself. Now the Chinese will rule Afghanistan, and i am sure they will not accept any backtalk of the Taliban. xx Michael

  3. for all of you who blustered, screamed and incessantly whined over the last 4 years that blood was on the hands of people who voted for trump, for whatever it was that he did to spill that blood, how does it feel for you to be complicit for the blood of American citizens stranded behind enemy lines? You must be very proud of your decision to vote for such a leader. I congratulate you for your place in history and I hope you can sleep at night knowing that you played a part in this by “voting your conscience”.. If you’re pissed off because of what I said, good, maybe you should be. I give no apology for my words or my tone in this comment and if you don’t like it, well, tough.

    • All politicians are rotten greedy scoundrels who care about their popularity and ego first. That being said, I would give Biden a pass on this issue. He did the best he could in an impossible situation, a war which he inherited from previous administrations who bungled their way thru without as much criticism.
Let’s face it, Biden is no Kissinger, heck I’d consider resurrecting Dick Cheney for this operation but alas beggars can’t be choosers. It is what it is….

    • Whereas this is a monumental operational and intelligence screw-up and there is no getting around this.
It should be born in mind Trump initiated the negotiations which were part of the circumstances which lead to this situation.
It should be remembered US forces went into Afghanistan after September 2001 with the approval of most of the US population.
It should be remembered many in the media were excited at the progress leading to the demise of the Taliban, under the usual belief so sort of western democracy would be set up.
It should be remembered this current set of circumstances started (if you can use that word) on the 24th December 1979 when the USSR went into Afghanistan to support their client regime.
And I could go on with ‘it should be remembered’s so far back into that region I could drive readers into cycles of horror and depression at the cruelty AND then draw parallels with other regions all over the world AND castigate the hypocrisies of my own Left wing for their failures. AND then circle back on the issue of Gun Control and the slaughter there.
When it comes around to it from a world view, by degrees of separation, apathy and selective concern we all got blood on our hands. We can thank The Good Lord God for being Just and Merciful with us so far, and Christ took on our burden otherwise we would have been swept off long ago.
Trying to shift the whole blame onto Biden and those who voted for him is not the Hill you want to choose, it’ll come back to bite you.
      We’re all in this together.

This was written in with a sense of angry weariness in all directions.
Enough with the point-scoring , ‘I told you so’s and the hind-sight heroes.
If anyone out there cares, like I mean really ‘f-bombing’ cares then get giving practical help to the refuges in some form or another.

  4. I’ve had my say on Jeff’s blog Jill.
    Kinda went global and historical…
    Sorry ’bout that.
Another Human Tragedy, another page in the book, another one which it is difficult to give a date when it truly started.
I gotta go now and do some writing to calm down.

        Lyrics
        “Life Gets Tee-Jus Don’t It”

The sun comes up and the sun goes down.
Hands on the clock they just keep going around.
I just get up and its time to lay down.
        Life gets tee-jus don’t it?
My shoes untied but I don’t care.
I really ain’t figuring on going anywhere.
I just have to wash and comb my hair,
        and thats just wasted effort.
The water in the well its getting lower
and lower can’t take a bath for six month’s more.
But I’ve heard it said and its probably true,
that to much bathing it’ll weaking you.
I open the door and the flies swarm in.
I shut the door and I’m sweating again.
I move to fast and I crack my shin.
Its just one darn thing after another.
Old brown mule he must be sick.
Jabbed him in the rump with a stick.
He humped his back but he didn’t kick.
        Something cockeyed somewhere.
Mouse chauwing on the pantry door.
Fool’s been at it for a month or more.
When he gets through he sure going to be sore.
There ain’t a dang thing in there.
The cows gone dry and the hens won’t lay.
        Fish quit biting last Saturday.
Troubles pile up day by day.
        Now I’m getting dandriff.
Grief and misery, pains and woes,
debts and taxes and so it goes.
Now it seems I’m getting a cold in the nose.
        Life gets tasteless don’t it?

  5. Rarely would I refer to a group of politicians as comedians as they rarely do anything remotely funny. Funny Ha Ha that is rather than Funny Peculiar but the GOP has proved me wrong. For them to have the temerity to call for the impeachment of Joe Biden after supporting their previous holder of his office through some of the worst disasters, the worst mismanagement, the most brazen attempts at cheating and causing an insurrection attempt is nothing short of ludicrous. Especially given that Biden is merely following a path set by Trump after comin to an agreement with the Taliban about the handing over of Afghanistan to them. Has Biden made mistakes, sure and no doubt there will be censure for that but at least he’s trying to get some civilians out who have helped the U.S. administration A wee bit of a botched job not helped by idiots at home sating they don’t want Afghanis in the US, despite 20years of hep from them. The media should by and large be ashamed for not just treating this as a news opportunity but for not being bipartisan and treating the story fairly. I refuse to count Fox News etc as media as their take on this is solely to shit stir for the Democrats. An ounce of fairness couldn’t slip in with a ton of their BS. if they tried- and they won’t.
Biden is doing his best for the US and the Comedians are out for laughs.

  6. Utter mess. Many will suffer from this incompetence. Here it’s what happens when you put the lazy, self deluded, halfwits in charge. Trump agreed a shocking agreement with the Taliban. Guaranteed this outcome. Biden has been incompetent on this key policy area. He has never believed in nation building but there has to be a time and place for deeper thinking of a foreign policy area. This is what happens when foreign policy is about profit and focusing on just one terrorist faction. This called for grown up politics. Sadly there were no grown ups in the room.

    • I don’t blame Biden as much as I do George W. Bush for sending troops to Afghanistan in 2001. There really wasn’t reason to … the training camps he wanted to wipe out could have been done, and largely were done, by air. Yes, the withdrawal became a fiasco, but you know … I think it was going to be no matter when it was done or how. The only thing I can see that he might have done differently is to have quietly gotten as many Afghanis out of the country as possible before he started removing troops. Sigh.

      • It was actually my first protest March. In Australia, we didn’t want to go to War either. I was in my last year of HS at the time. Too this day it’s still the biggest march in our state’s History. They still went any way =/ I don’t think many of the people wanted to go, but the politicians didn’t listen. I wonder if there has ever been a time when politicians listen to the people, lol

        • That’s interesting! First, I didn’t know you were Australian! Second, I wasn’t aware of the protest march over there … I imagine we were too caught up in our own news in the days post-9/11 to think about much else. Well, there are times that politicians … at least the good ones … DO listen to the people, but there are a few times that they must make the tough decisions even if we don’t agree with them. And then, you have the ones like our Republican Party who just simply don’t care about we the people, but only about their own power and wealth.

      • Once in we have to do this right. After the disaster of Trumps deal already the Taliban were making advances. Army desertions rising rapidly. Any withdrawal had to be carefully managed and with as much support as possible from all parties, as uncomfortable as that might be. Air support had to remain in place while a well planned out package was put in place for those in Afghanistan whose life’s would now be at risk from the withdrawal. This would take months. To make the assumption that the Afghan army was more than able to do this on their own, as Biden and Johnson openly did was pure delusion. Many in that country will now suffer because of that mistake. But I guess it’s ok as they are not British or American seems to be the official policy.
